Chapter 69 She Swayed
Seeing more people entering the elevator, Samuel gentlemanly extended his hand to help Elizabeth avoid any potential collisions. He smiled and said, "Does she really need my help? She's always been so proud. The fact that she called me over shows she's truly afraid of you, doesn't it?"
Elizabeth thought, "You really do understand Margaret."
Just as the elevator arrived, Elizabeth walked straight ahead without answering him. Samuel blocked her path and said, "Ms. Jones, we haven't finished our conversation. How about we find a quiet place to talk?"
Elizabeth realized that her earlier behavior might have been a bit impulsive.
She was also confused by her sudden mood swings.
Before, when she wanted to distance herself from Michael and get a divorce, she could still chat calmly with Margaret. But now, maybe because she was catching feelings for Michael, she saw Margaret as a rival, a threat to her love. She couldn't stay calm around her anymore.
Elizabeth and Samuel found a bench in the hospital garden.
Samuel flashed a charming smile, "No worries, Ms. Jones. When I was younger, I was a hothead. But after all these years in business, I've learned that matters of the heart should take a backseat. We should focus on our interests first. With enough money, you can speak with more confidence, right?"
Elizabeth thought about Mary's harsh attitude in the ward and remembered agreeing to marry the then-comatose Michael because her family was broke.
If the Jones Family hadn't been short on cash, she wouldn't have married into the Thomas Family.
If the Jones Group bounced back financially, she could stand on equal footing with Michael.
With that in mind, she stood up and told Samuel, "I'm sorry for the trouble, Mr. Taylor. I'll be back at the company tomorrow to get a formal contract drafted."
Samuel stood up, smiled, and said, "Ms. Jones, it's late. It's not safe for you to be out alone. Where are you headed? Let me give you a ride."
Elizabeth quickly waved her hand, "No need, the streetlights are still on. I'll just grab a cab. Maybe Margaret needs you more, you should go talk to her."
Samuel nodded, "Alright, I won't insist. I'll wait for your good news, Ms. Jones. If anything comes up, let's stay in touch by phone."
Elizabeth nodded and left.
It was really late, and Nancy was probably already asleep, so Elizabeth didn't want to bother her. She stood by the roadside, scrolled through her contacts, and called Sarah.
After a while, Sarah answered, sounding a bit out of breath, "What's up, Elizabeth?"
Elizabeth apologized, "Sarah, I'm at the hospital entrance. I have nowhere to go. Can you take me in?"
As soon as Sarah heard this, she immediately said, "Elizabeth, hang tight. I'll be there in a jiffy. Just wait for me."
Elizabeth replied, "Okay, I'll be at the hospital entrance."
Half an hour later, a car pulled up at the hospital entrance. Sarah hopped out of the passenger seat and hurried over to Elizabeth.
She hugged Elizabeth and gave her a once-over.
Elizabeth squeezed her hand. "Sarah, I'm fine."
Sarah let out a long breath, "You scared me. Middle of the night, a call from you in the hospital—I thought something terrible happened! What are you doing here so late?"
Elizabeth explained, "It's not me. It's Michael. He got hurt, had surgery, and now he's in the ward."
David got out of the car and asked, "Elizabeth, who got hurt?"
Elizabeth lowered her head and said, "Michael."
She lowered her head and said apologetically, "He got injured saving me."
David's voice suddenly grew louder, "Didn't Michael go after you? It's only been a few hours, and he's already hurt and in the hospital? Elizabeth, what did you do to him?"
Sarah gently nudged David with her elbow, "David, this isn't Elizabeth's fault. It was an accident. You can't blame her."
Sarah immediately grabbed David's arm, "David, calm down! Why are you yelling at Elizabeth? You don't even know what happened yet."
David said in a low voice, "I'm sorry. I got flustered when I heard Michael was hurt. But I still want to know how it happened. Didn't he run out of the restaurant to chase you? What went down that he's now in the hospital?"
Elizabeth said quietly, "After leaving the restaurant, I went to my mom's house. Michael followed me there. At my mom's place, a piece of metal got blown off the roof by the wind. It was going to fall on me, but Michael pushed me away, and it hit him instead. He got knocked down and hurt his leg. I called an ambulance, and they brought him here. He had surgery, and when I left, he was still under anesthesia. He should be awake by now. If you're worried, you can go up and see him. The people in his ward shouldn't kick you out."
Sarah asked, "Who's in his ward? Did they kick you out?"
David said, "I bet it's Mary. Michael's bodyguards wouldn't dare."
Elizabeth nodded, "Yeah, Mary is inside."
David said in a low voice, "I'm sorry. You two keep talking. I'll go check on Michael. Wait here. I'll be back to take you home."
Sarah said to him, "David, you should stay with Michael. I'll take Elizabeth to my place to rest."
After saying this, Sarah pulled Elizabeth to wait for a cab at the hospital entrance.
David caught up, "Sarah, I'll drive you both home. It's late, and it's not safe."
David drove them to Sarah's villa.
Sarah led Elizabeth into the Martinez Villa, and they headed upstairs to Sarah's bedroom.
"Elizabeth, we’re sharing the bed tonight. It’s big enough for both of us," Sarah said with a grin, hugging Elizabeth.
She handed Elizabeth a pair of pajamas. "These are new. I washed them but never wore them. You can have them."
Elizabeth took the pajamas, noticing how velvety they were. They were a cute pink with beautiful embroidered patterns on the pockets and collar.
"Thanks," Elizabeth said, slipping into the loose-fitting pajamas that felt super comfy.
Sarah laughed. "Why so formal with me?"
Elizabeth hesitated, then asked, "Sarah, are you living with David now?"
