Chapter 97 If I Die, Will You Be Sad?
Elizabeth's hand suddenly touched his skin.
She sat awkwardly in his arms.
Michael wrapped his arms around her waist, burying his head in the crook of her neck, like he was soaking up her warmth.
"If you need an explanation, I can give you one," he said, though he never felt the need to explain himself to anyone. "Patricia jumped off the building on her own. My guys didn't force her. As soon as the hotel manager opened the door, she jumped. If you don't believe me, check the surveillance footage outside the hotel."
He finally gave in to her.
When it came to Elizabeth, he could easily toss his principles aside.
Elizabeth lowered her head, gently playing with his fingers. "It's not that I don't believe you. It's just that when I first asked if you had anything to do with it, why didn't you answer me?"
Michael said in a low voice, "When you asked me that, I didn't know how to respond. Patricia freaked out when she saw someone opening the door and thought her plan was blown, so she tried to escape from the balcony. If my guys hadn't followed her, she wouldn't have been scared into jumping. If I said it had nothing to do with me, I'd be lying. But if I said it did, you'd think I killed her. Wouldn't you? You set a trap for me. No matter how I answered, I'd fall into it."
Elizabeth thought about it and realized she would have thought that way.
She lifted her head and turned to look at Michael. "Then if you had caught her, what would you have done to her?"
Michael's voice turned cold. "Her jumping to her death was a mercy. If she had fallen into my hands, I would have made her wish for death. She dared to cross me; what else could she be seeking but death?"
Elizabeth turned away, her voice lowering, "But we weren't hurt at all."
"Do you think I'm too cruel? Elizabeth, have you ever thought about what would have happened if the bodyguards hadn't arrived in time? Would that weapon have landed on you? If I hadn't had bodyguards with me that day, or if there had only been one, unable to fully protect me, do you think we'd still be sitting here talking? I survived because I was lucky. But I'm not a god; there are too many people in this world who want me dead. They use schemes and plots against me, and I can't guarantee I'll escape every time. Like the car accident last time, I was in a coma. Luckily, I woke up. But what if that truck had been going a bit faster? Do you think I'd still be alive? They organize assassination attempts again and again. Since I know who's behind it, why shouldn't I strike back? Why should I be merciful and leave them in this world to find another chance to kill me? As long as they are alive, they won't stop trying to assassinate me," Michael turned Elizabeth's face to look directly into her eyes. "Tell me, Elizabeth, if I were the one who died, would you be sad? Would you want to avenge me?"
Elizabeth stared at Michael's extraordinarily handsome face in silence.
She finally understood Michael.
You couldn't advise someone to be kind if you hadn't endured their suffering.
What he had gone through was beyond what most people could bear.
She hadn't experienced his terrifying ordeals, so she could easily choose to forgive.
After all, Patricia had targeted Michael this time. Patricia genuinely wanted him dead.
Elizabeth realized she had been too one-sided in her thinking.
From start to finish, she hadn't considered Michael's feelings.
And she had misunderstood him more than once or twice.
Thinking of this, she turned and gently hugged Michael, resting her head on him. "I'm sorry. I shouldn't have said that to you. Don't talk about dying. It would make me sad."
The next morning, Susan prepared breakfast and set the table for them.
Michael and Elizabeth sat together for breakfast.
Michael told Elizabeth, "Jennifer's back in the country. Yesterday, she caused a scene at the police station. She was really aggressive, insulting the officers and questioning their investigation. The police chief felt sorry for her, thinking she was emotionally unstable after losing Patricia, so they didn't press charges. They just let her go."
Elizabeth nodded, "That's her way."
Michael looked up and warned her, "She'll definitely contact you soon. I'm worried she might harm you. Make sure to take bodyguards with you when you go out and be careful."
Elizabeth nodded, "Okay."
Just as they finished talking, Elizabeth's phone rang.
It was a call from Jennifer.
Elizabeth glanced at the name on the screen and showed it to Michael. "You were right. She's calling."
Elizabeth swiped to answer.
An angry female voice immediately came through. "Elizabeth, I don't care where you are or what you're doing, get over here right now. I'm at the police station. Did you know Patricia was murdered?"
Elizabeth coldly replied, "The police should have already told you. Patricia tried to hire someone to commit murder. Her death was an accident. If she hadn't died, she would have faced legal consequences."
Jennifer shouted into the phone, "You're so cold-blooded. I don't believe this was an accident, and I can't explain it over the phone. Hurry over here."
The driver took Elizabeth to a spot near the police station.
Elizabeth got out of the car early and walked to the station entrance.
Jennifer spotted her from a distance. She rushed over and grabbed Elizabeth's sleeve. "Elizabeth, did you know your sister Patricia is dead? Why are you acting like nothing happened? You won't even shed a tear for her. How can you be so heartless?"
Elizabeth pulled her sleeve out of Jennifer's grasp. "Whether Patricia is my sister is another matter. The dead can't come back to life. Although she wronged me many times, she's dead now, and I don't want to bring those things up."
She deliberately stood a bit farther from Jennifer.
Jennifer angrily questioned her. "Elizabeth, do you hate me? Then come at me! Why did you hurt Patricia?"
Elizabeth was shocked. "Explain yourself. What does this have to do with me?"
Jennifer's eyes widened, "Don't think I don't know. This has something to do with Michael. Aren't you two married? Tell me, did you two conspire to kill my daughter?"
Elizabeth coldly looked at her. "The police should have already told you that this has nothing to do with Michael. He was also a victim. Your daughter Patricia tried to hire someone to commit murder. She panicked and fell to her death while trying to escape. It was an accident! Don't blame innocent people for this."
Jennifer laughed maniacally, "Innocent? You dare call Michael innocent? Don't you know what he's done? You've been with him for so long, don't you know how cruel and ruthless he is?"
