Chapter 324 The Cries in the Old House

Elizabeth held Sarah's hand. "Sarah, we're here to eat. Don't let irrelevant people ruin our meal."

She handed Sarah a fork. "Good food and good times shouldn't be wasted."

Sarah nodded. "You're right. Let's eat first. We shouldn't waste good food. Elizabeth, don't worry. I'll help you find out the truth."

Elizabeth chuckled. "Sarah, you're not a detective. Why bother? As long as what they're doing doesn't affect us, it's none of our business. Let's just ignore them."

At the other table, Michael glanced over at Elizabeth. That woman was completely focused on her food.

Did she even have a heart? Or rather, did she have any feelings for him?

Margaret and her cousin Octavia were chatting away, but he wasn't listening to a word.

Margaret occasionally asked him something, and he responded absentmindedly.

This Octavia looked so much like Elizabeth, but she lacked Elizabeth's charm. She was pretty, but soulless.

He turned his head to look at Elizabeth's table, but they had already left.

The next day, Michael went to Stellar Enterprises and saw Octavia in the office.

He called Margaret over, frowning. "Isn't that your cousin? How did she get in here?"

Margaret looked confused. "Michael..."

Michael gave her a cold look. "This is the office. Call me Mr. Thomas."

Margaret quickly corrected herself. "Yes, Mr. Thomas. Last night, I asked for your opinion, and you agreed to let Octavia intern here. I asked which department to place her in, and you told me to decide. I saw that the secretarial department was short-staffed, so I put her there temporarily."

Michael's tone was icy. "Take her to your department, or she leaves."

Margaret nodded quickly. "Yes, Mr. Thomas. I'll take her right away."

She went to the secretarial department and brought Octavia to the PR department.

Octavia was puzzled. "Margaret, wasn't I supposed to stay by Mr. Thomas's side?"

Margaret frowned. "He didn't agree. We'll take it step by step. There will be a way."

Michael's phone rang. It was William.

Michael frowned. Since their mother's funeral, William hadn't contacted him. Why was he calling now?

He answered the call.

"Michael, it's been a while since you visited the old house. Come over for dinner tonight? We haven't had a drink together in ages."

"Alright."

That evening, the driver took Michael to the Thomas Mansion.

As he got out of the car, he saw a familiar figure. "Calla?"

Calla walked over to him. "Michael, you're here."

Michael frowned. "What are you doing here?"

After they broke up, she had been with Anthony. Had Anthony come back?

After Mary passed away, Anthony had disappeared, as if avoiding something. Why had he suddenly decided to return now?

Michael entered the foyer, where William was already waiting. Seeing him, William immediately came over and hugged him.

"Michael, it's been so long. Didn't you miss me?"

There were tears in William's eyes.

Michael lowered his head. "I'm sorry."

Mary had died in this old house, and he had a psychological aversion to it. There were no good memories here.

William poured Michael a drink and raised his glass. "Michael, your return means you still see me as your brother. That makes me happy."

Michael said nothing and downed his drink.

William poured him another. "Michael, there's something I need to talk to you about, but I don't know how to start."

Michael thought, 'Of course, William wouldn't contact me unless he needed something.'

All this talk of brotherly love was just an excuse. Over the years, when had he ever seen any brotherly affection from William?

William continued, "Anthony is getting older. His classmates are all married with kids, but he's still single. Now, he has a girlfriend. They've been wandering around, which is a disgrace to the Thomas family. I thought it would be better to bring them back to live in the old house, so they can take care of each other. What do you think?"

He looked at Michael with hopeful eyes.

Michael was indifferent. What did this have to do with him? Did William think he would fight for the ownership of this house?

A place that brought him countless nightmares? He couldn't care less.

He downed another drink. "I don't care."

William seemed relieved.

William rubbed his hands, hesitant. "Michael, it's about Anthony's girlfriend."

Michael looked at him. "Calla?"

William's eyes widened. "You know?"

Michael nodded. "I saw her at the door." He had known for a while, but he didn't see the need to tell William.

A flash of disgust crossed William's eyes but quickly disappeared.

He looked at Michael ingratiatingly. "Calla said she's pregnant with Anthony's child. She had a miscarriage before and hurt her body. The doctor said this pregnancy is unstable and she needs to rest. This is Anthony's first child..."

Seeing Michael's impatience, he stopped talking.

Michael stood up. "If there's nothing else, I'll be leaving."

William quickly said, "I was just worried you might be upset about this."

Michael replied, "Calla and I broke up long ago. She has the freedom to choose her partner. I wish them well."

William sighed in relief.

Michael strode out.

In the yard, under the shadow of the bushes, a woman stood watching him leave.

Anthony stood behind her, snorting disdainfully.

Calla turned to him. "Anthony, what are you doing here?"

Anthony looked at her with disgust. "I should be asking you that! You're my girlfriend, carrying my child. Why are you standing here watching your ex? Do you still hope he'll come back for you? Forget it! You're just his discarded trash! No one else will take you back but me!"

He stepped into the shadows, grabbed Calla by the hair, and dragged her inside.

Calla screamed in pain, but the servants in the yard, seemingly used to it, didn't intervene.

William's voice came from behind, not too loud, not too soft. "Be careful. There are people around. Don't cause a scene."

Anthony didn't look back. "I know what I'm doing."

He dragged Calla up to the second-floor room.

Soon, Calla's cries of pain echoed through the old house, lingering in the night.
