Chapter 270 Did He Do It on Purpose?
Elizabeth said, "Carter, you just got better. Don't stress yourself out. I can handle the company stuff. You should rest and maybe write some songs when you feel up to it. Seriously, stay away from Jennifer. She's trouble, and you don't need that drama."
Carter was quiet for a moment, thinking it over, then said, "Alright, Elizabeth, I get it."
They ended the call.
Elizabeth felt a wave of relief; she had managed to convince Carter.
Carter was amazing and she couldn't let someone like Jennifer mess with him.
That evening, Elizabeth and Dean headed back to Whispering Pines Estates together.
The new staff had already prepared dinner, and the kids were back from school.
As Elizabeth opened the door and saw the lilies in the vase on the table, she felt a bit disoriented.
For a moment, she imagined Nancy was home, and tears welled up in her eyes. Nancy had been gone for a while, and Michael was out of her life too.
She shook her head, walked over, and smiled as she hugged the kids.
After dinner, Dean invited Daniel over to play some games.
Elizabeth stayed with Pearl and Nolan in the room, playing with toys.
From the living room downstairs, she could hear Dean and Daniel's game battles and their conversation.
Dean asked, "Daniel, is Michael still alive?"
Daniel kicked Dean and said, "Don't jinx Mr. Thomas! He's fine!"
Dean said, "I can't help it. He's such a jerk, always making Elizabeth upset. When she's upset, I'm not happy either."
Daniel said, "But you can't take it out on him! He's been good to me!"
Dean retorted, "Daniel, are you trying to piss me off? He's just your boss. Why are you defending him so much? He's clearly a jerk!"
Daniel said, "Didn't he just divorce Elizabeth? And wasn't that Elizabeth's own request? What else has he done wrong?"
Dean replied, "He's done plenty of jerk things! Each one is like stabbing Elizabeth in the heart! He was dating Elizabeth while still thinking about Eloise. He just divorced Elizabeth and then turned around to have a child with Calla. It's bad enough he's with Calla, but he also keeps Eloise around. Tell me, if he's not a jerk, who is?"
Daniel said, "I think we've all misunderstood him. Mr. Thomas doesn't have romantic feelings for Eloise. Their relationship is more like family. And as for Calla, Mr. Thomas is clearly with her to treat Eloise's illness! There's no romance between them!"
Dean said, "He doesn't even care about her, yet he's still with her and even had a child with her. What a jerk!"
Daniel said, "Dean, you're being unreasonable. Mr. Thomas didn't intentionally have a child with Calla. That child was probably a result of Calla's scheming. Mr. Thomas is very picky about women. He would never casually sleep with a woman. I've known him for so long, I know he has emotional cleanliness. He is very repulsed by ordinary women."
Dean asked, "Calla isn't an ordinary woman?"
Daniel responded, "I can't explain it to you. Anyway, the child in Calla's belly is definitely not Mr. Thomas's intention. He has only ever loved one woman, and that's Elizabeth."
Dean said, "In any case, he's not good enough for Elizabeth. The Elizabeth I know has never dated any other man besides that jerk Michael."
As they continued to argue back and forth, Elizabeth gently closed the door, shutting out all the noise from downstairs.
After tucking Pearl and Nolan in and watching them drift off to sleep, Elizabeth headed back to her own room.
She thought to herself, 'So what if Michael's a jerk? So what if he's a playboy? What does it matter to me? From now on, I'm living for myself and the kids. Let that man stay in the past.'
Just then, Carter called her again, "Elizabeth, my new song is recorded."
Elizabeth said, "That's awesome, Carter!"
Carter asked, "Aren't you curious about what it's about?"
Elizabeth replied, "Of course I am. I loved your previous songs. I'm sure this one's great too."
Carter's voice softened. "Elizabeth, I wrote this song especially for you and your robot. It's called 'With You.' I've decided to feature elements of the Jones Group's robot in the music video. My agent and I think it fits perfectly."
Elizabeth was touched. "Carter, I don't want to drag you into this."
Carter said, "Elizabeth, I'm here to help. I mean it."
Hearing this, Elizabeth stopped trying to dissuade him. "Alright then. Mr. McGinnis's first song after his comeback is priceless. Let's talk about the signing details."
Carter smiled. "Okay."
The next day, Carter's agent came to the Jones Group to iron out the collaboration details with the PR department. They set the time and place for the new song release and the signing ceremony.
A few days later, Elizabeth received a custom dress delivered by Carter's assistant.
She opened the box and found a handwritten note from Carter: [Elizabeth, I know your closet is full of dresses. But I hope you'll wear this one at the release event. Also, I have a small request: could you wear that necklace when you see me that day?]
Elizabeth unfolded the dress and held it up to the mirror.
The design was nothing special, even a bit conservative. It was a standard color and style. But it would look perfect with the necklace Carter had given her.
Elizabeth sent a message to Carter: [Okay, no problem.]
Carter replied with a happy emoji.
On the day of the release event, Dean accompanied Elizabeth to the venue early.
The staff was setting up, but Carter hadn't arrived yet.
Dean reassured Elizabeth, "Big stars never show up until the last minute at these things."
Elizabeth shook her head with a smile, thinking Carter wouldn't do that. He probably just thought arriving on time was best.
After all, getting there early would leave him with nothing to do.
The fans outside the venue had arrived even earlier.
It was Carter's first work and appearance since his comeback, and the fans were super excited.
They weren't just looking forward to his return to the stage; they were eager to see how he'd changed after three years away.
As the ceremony time approached, more fans gathered, and their excitement grew.
Seeing this, Elizabeth arranged for more security to keep things orderly outside.
She didn't want any mishaps. She wanted everything to go smoothly for Carter.
Suddenly, the fans outside erupted in excited screams.
Elizabeth looked out and saw Carter, surrounded by bodyguards, walking towards the venue. Seeing him, she was stunned.
