Chapter 215 Heard His Heartbeat
Michael dressed up neatly and checked the time.
It was already late, so he skipped calling the driver and decided to drive himself.
The Rolls-Royce roared to life and headed straight for the Last Drop.
Inside the bar, Dean was on the phone with Daniel. "Hey Daniel, wanna come have a drink with me?"
Daniel sighed, listening to Dean's drunken rambling. "Dean, do you even know what time it is? I gotta work early tomorrow."
Dean laughed, "Tomorrow's Saturday, why are you working?"
Daniel replied, "Michael's working overtime, so I gotta be there too."
Dean scoffed, "Is Michael a demon or something? Why does he always make you work overtime?"
Daniel snapped, "Don't talk about Michael like that! Only I get to complain about him."
Dean rolled his eyes. "You're such a pushover! Does Michael even know how loyal you are?"
Daniel shrugged, "I don't care if he knows or not."
Dean suggested, "Why don't you come work at the Jones Group? Elizabeth won't make you work overtime."
"Michael treats me well. I'm not leaving him," Daniel said firmly.
Dean got frustrated. "So, are you coming tonight or not?"
Daniel refused. "It's too late. I'm going to bed."
Dean shouted, "You're such a buzzkill!"
Daniel asked, "Who are you with?"
Dean replied, "Elizabeth."
Daniel asked again, "Elizabeth's there too? Is she drunk? What's going on with you two?"
"You're not coming anyway! Why do you care? She's drunk, but Michael's on his way! I'm drunk, and no one cares about me," Dean said, sounding a bit hurt.
Daniel, upon hearing this, couldn't believe that Michael was going to join Elizabeth for drinks again.
Elizabeth's voice came through the phone. "Dean, do you like Daniel?"
For some reason, Daniel didn't want to hear the answer. He quickly ended the call and buried himself under the covers.
Winter had arrived, and everything was getting cold, even the covers. Daniel found himself wishing for someone to keep him warm.
Meanwhile, Michael was driving and talking to Elizabeth on the phone. "Wait for me. Don't wander off."
"I'm not wandering. Wait, who are you? Why should I listen to you?" Elizabeth replied.
Michael said, "Elizabeth, it's Michael."
Elizabeth said, "Michael? Happy birthday!"
"You already said that today," Michael reminded her.
"So what? Today is still your birthday. How are you celebrating?" Elizabeth asked.
Michael started to answer, but Elizabeth interrupted, "Oh, I remember! You're celebrating with your Eloise! Then get lost! I don't want to wish you a happy birthday anymore!" She didn't hang up, just tossed the phone aside.
She lay down on the booth.
Michael called out, "Elizabeth?"
But she couldn't hear him.
Dean saw her collapse and came over to pat her face. "Elizabeth? What's wrong? Fell asleep? We agreed to drink together! You left me again!"
Suddenly, a big hand reached over and moved Dean's hand away.
Dean was surprised. "Michael? Did you fly over?"
Michael ignored him.
He picked up Elizabeth and carried her out of the bar.
"You settle the bill," he told Dean.
Michael placed Elizabeth in the passenger seat.
He leaned over her to fasten her seatbelt.
Elizabeth's head tilted and rested on Michael's shoulder.
Michael froze, his body stiffening.
Elizabeth's cheeks were rosy, so close to his lips.
In the silent car, Michael could hear his own heartbeat.
He gently turned his head and planted a soft kiss on Elizabeth's forehead.
Trying to keep his cool, he straightened her up in the seat.
Michael got back behind the wheel, started the car, and headed towards Whispering Pines Estates.
Elizabeth woke up the next morning with a pounding headache.
She washed her face, rubbed her temples, and went to grab some breakfast.
"Dean, have you seen my phone?" she asked.
Dean, munching on toast, handed it over. "You left it at the bar last night. The bartender chased me down to give it to me."
Elizabeth looked confused. "Why didn't you give it to me last night? What if I had a call?"
Dean rubbed his forehead. "You were so wasted last night. How could I give it to you? Just so you could throw it away again?"
Elizabeth's eyes widened. "I threw my phone?"
She grabbed some blueberry jam, spread it on her toast, and took a sip of milk.
"How did we get back last night?" she asked.
Dean replied, "I took a cab."
Elizabeth stared at him. "What about me? Did you leave me there?"
Dean shook his head. "You called Michael to pick you up. He drove you back."
Elizabeth choked on her milk, spitting it out before she could swallow.
Dean quickly patted her back. "Why are you so freaked out? Didn't you enjoy cursing him last night?"
Elizabeth's eyes widened. "I cursed him? What did I say?"
Dean smirked. "Think about it yourself."
Elizabeth bit into her toast, trying to remember.
She recalled sitting in a car, her head resting on a familiar shoulder.
Just as she was about to drift off, someone opened the car door, picked her up, and quietly carried her into a room, laying her on the bed.
She clung to that person's neck, refusing to let go.
Dean's voice echoed, "Elizabeth, let go."
She had thought the person holding her was Dean.
But it sounded like Dean was a bit far away.
She hummed and let go.
Dean's voice came again, "Michael! You should go."
When she heard Michael's name, she sat up, eyes wide, staring at the person in front of her.
She remembered grabbing his tie and accusing him, "Michael, you bastard! Having Eloise isn't enough; now you want Calla too? You unfaithful jerk! I don't want to like you! I'd rather find a four-legged frog than be with you! Get lost! I never want to see you again!"
She hung her head, raised her arm, and pointed towards the door. "Get out!"
She didn't hear Michael's voice.
When she looked up, she was alone in her room.
Dean had sent Michael out.
Elizabeth's head was a mess. She picked up the remote, turned off the light, and fell asleep.
Now, Elizabeth was still nibbling on her blueberry toast, her eyes unfocused.
Dean waved his hand in front of her face. "Elizabeth! Elizabeth? What are you thinking about?"
Elizabeth was about to answer when her phone rang.
She glanced at the caller ID and quickly answered.
As she listened, her face lit up with joy.
When she hung up, Dean asked, "What made you so happy? Did Kieran get caught?"
Elizabeth smiled. "You guessed right!"
Dean held out his hand, and they high-fived.
"Congrats. Your long-time wish has finally come true," he said.
Elizabeth nodded. "I need to tell Mom and Dad the good news."
Dean asked, "Are you going to the cemetery?"
Elizabeth nodded again. "Dad never really rested in peace. Now that Kieran is caught, I need to tell him so he can be at ease."
Dean nodded. "Your dad can finally rest in peace."
