Chapter 31 Alliance
"He doesn't like kids? Well, that's understandable. Some people find kids troublesome. But if he has a woman he likes, why doesn't he marry her?" Nancy was puzzled.
Elizabeth chimed in, "Probably 'cause she ain't into him."
"Forget about him. Even if he doesn't give you the papers, you can stay with me. When the time's right, give the birth on the down-low, and I'll help you out."
Elizabeth rested her head on Nancy's shoulder, finally letting the tears flow.
Nancy gave her a gentle pat on the back, "Elizabeth, lie down and chill for a bit. I'll whip up something to eat. You're pregnant and deserve something tasty, just hang tight."
Elizabeth nodded and flopped onto the bed.
She'd been thinking the same thing.
Last night at the Elysium Club, Michael was a total jerk.
This morning, the bodyguards dragged her to the hospital, rough as hell.
These past couple of days had been a wild ride. Not good for the baby.
She needed a check-up and to figure out who spilled her secrets.
Nancy finished cooking and set the table. She called Elizabeth over to eat.
Elizabeth sat down, eyeing the spread, "Mom, it's been ages since I had your cooking."
Nancy's eyes got misty, "Elizabeth, I wasn't much help before. Always made you struggle. From now on, you're sticking with me. I'll keep you safe."
With that, she piled food onto Elizabeth's plate.
They were munching away when Elizabeth's phone buzzed.
She glanced at the caller ID. It was Anthony.
She didn't wanna deal with him.
Anthony kept blowing up her phone. Elizabeth was getting ticked off.
"Anthony, what do you want?" she snapped.
Anthony's voice was all careful, "Elizabeth, I wanna see you."
"But I don't wanna see you. Whatever you gotta say, spit it out over the phone."
"It's not something I can talk about over the phone," Anthony said.
"If it's too much for the phone, text me." Elizabeth didn't wanna hear his voice at all.
She couldn't believe she'd been with a guy like Anthony for three years.
"Elizabeth, I gotta see you," Anthony pressed.
Elizabeth sighed, knowing he wouldn't quit. It was probably about the babies or Michael.
"Fine. Give me a few days. I'll send you the address," she agreed.
"Okay. See you then, Elizabeth."
They set up to meet at a café on the corner in a week.
Elizabeth stared at Anthony's face.
Anthony said, "Quit looking at me like that. You knew this was coming. These scars are on you."
Elizabeth turned to stare out the window, "You did this to yourself."
Anthony covered the cut on his lip and mumbled, "Yeah, I know, I messed up. I lied to you back then. Not taking you away at the wedding was on me. I get why you're pissed."
Elizabeth let out a bitter laugh, "Anthony, you think I'm mad about the wedding? You really think I'm a pushover?"
Anthony looked confused, "What are you talking about?"
"Stop playing dumb, Anthony. Why did you push me to marry Michael back then?" she snapped.
"Elizabeth, it was for our future. Didn't I tell you? I thought Michael wouldn't wake up. If you married him and had a kid, his assets would be ours eventually. I didn't expect him to wake up. It was unfair to you, Elizabeth." Anthony tried to look all sincere.
He reached out to grab Elizabeth's hand.
Elizabeth yanked her hand back, glaring at him, "Anthony, you're still lying. You think I don't know?"
"Elizabeth, what else do you know?" he asked, bewildered.
Elizabeth sneered, "What about Patricia? Care to explain your relationship with her?"
Anthony looked guilty, "So you knew. No wonder you started ignoring me and acting different."
Elizabeth cut him off, "I don't wanna argue about this now, Anthony. Since you're with Patricia, tell me, where is she?"
Anthony got defensive, "Why do you wanna know?"
"I don't care about your fling," Elizabeth said with disdain. "I just need to know where she is. She, her mom, and her uncle took all the funds from The Jones Group. The company's cash flow is shot. I need to find them."
Anthony sighed in relief.
"She's traveling abroad. Elizabeth, her uncle is the company's CFO. Just finding Patricia won't help. She doesn't manage anything, she just spends money."
Elizabeth rolled her eyes, taking a sip of water, "You seem to know her pretty well."
Anthony tried to look all lovey-dovey, "Elizabeth, I know I messed up. I made the same mistake all guys make. I was tempted. But Elizabeth, I still love you the most. Patricia just spends money. She never thinks about me. She's nothing compared to you."
Elizabeth had enough of his crap.
"Anthony, why did you ask me to meet? If it's just to spew this nonsense, I'm out." Elizabeth stood up.
Anthony quickly grabbed her arm, "Wait, Elizabeth. I just wanna know, whose baby were you carrying?"
Elizabeth looked at him coldly, "The baby's gone. What's the point of asking now?"
"Elizabeth, even so," Anthony lifted his shirt, showing his bruised body, "you told Michael the baby was mine. That's why he beat me so bad. But Elizabeth, no matter whose baby it was, it couldn't have been mine, right? I'm taking the fall for someone else."
Anthony saw the cold look in Elizabeth's eyes and quickly added, "I know, I wronged you. I accept that. I won't argue. But," Anthony lowered his voice, "Elizabeth, how about we team up?"
