Chapter 306 Threat
Elizabeth's face turned bright red as she raised a hand to touch her neck.
Sarah nudged her shoulder again, laughing. "I'm just messing with you! Your neck's perfectly clean, there's nothing there."
Elizabeth lifted her hand, pretending to swat at her. "Sarah! You're teasing me again!"
Sarah leaned to the side, giggling as if to dodge. "No, Elizabeth, it's just that every time Michael looks at you, his eyes are full of desire, full of male possessiveness."
Elizabeth lowered her head. "I don't want to lie to you, Sarah. Actually, we do spend a lot of time together, and we do make love." She took a sip of water to hide her embarrassment.
Sarah said, "Elizabeth, you don't need to feel embarrassed. He's single, you're single, you can totally be together and make love. No need to feel guilty. Or, Elizabeth, do you want more?"
Elizabeth's expression suddenly turned somber. "Sarah, I don't even know what I want. Every time he's with me, I get this illusion that he loves me, that I'm important to him. But his heart has housed so many others before—Eloise, Calla, maybe even more. Do I even have a place in his heart?"
Sarah spoke earnestly, "Elizabeth, you still love him."
Elizabeth lowered her head. "Yes, it's so sad. To him, I'm dispensable. But I've always loved him. Even though I pretend not to care, I can't fool myself. I act like I don't love him, but the moment he's near, I can't help but pay attention to him."
Sarah hugged her shoulder. "Michael is very charming. He's handsome, well-built, capable, and he cares about you. Any woman could fall for him. Elizabeth, don't doubt yourself. As for whether Michael likes you, we'll just have to wait and see."
Elizabeth nodded. "I don't want to think about it right now, it's too stressful. I just want to raise the kids well."
As they were chatting, Elizabeth's phone rang.
"Hello, is this Ms. Elizabeth Jones?"
"Yes, this is Elizabeth. Who's calling?"
"Hello, Ms. Jones, there's an international package that requires your signature."
"I'm out right now, it's not convenient. Can you leave it at the door?"
"Ms. Jones, this package requires your personal signature. How long will you be? I'll wait for you."
Elizabeth turned to Sarah. "Did you order some international cosmetics for me?"
Sarah looked puzzled and shook her head. "No, I haven't done any online shopping lately, especially with all the wedding stuff going on."
Elizabeth was curious. She hadn't ordered anything either. Who could have sent an international package?
Sarah blinked and smiled. "Could it be Michael? Trying to surprise you?"
Elizabeth shook her head. "No way. He doesn't trust online shopping."
Sarah said, "Stop guessing. You'll find out when you get home."
Elizabeth sighed. "But we rarely get to have dinner together. I don't want to ruin our date over a package." She spoke into the phone, "If it's unclear where it's from, just return it."
The person on the other end quickly replied, "It's a package from Valoria."
Sarah said, "Elizabeth, didn't you spend many years in Valoria? Could it be from a classmate or friend?"
Elizabeth thought to herself, 'I changed my phone number after returning to the country. Those colleagues from the research lab don't even know my phone number or address here.'
Sarah suddenly asked, "Could it be related to Louis?"
Elizabeth considered it. It wasn't impossible. Louis had been in Valoria even longer than she had. Maybe he had sent it through someone.
The person on the phone seemed impatient. "Ms. Jones, if it's inconvenient for you, you can tell me your current location, and I'll bring it to you."
Sarah overheard and laughed. "Now that's dedication."
Elizabeth really didn't want to leave, so she gave the person the address of the restaurant.
Soon, the delivery person arrived in his delivery van, stopping right outside the restaurant.
Elizabeth signed for the package, and after the delivery person took a photo for record, he finally left.
Elizabeth placed the small box on the seat next to her and continued eating with Sarah.
Sarah asked, "Elizabeth, is there any sender information on it?"
Elizabeth glanced at it and shook her head. "No, there's only a vague address showing it's from Valoria. Even the sender's name is fake. Silver King? Who would use such a name? It's weird."
Sarah said, "Now I'm even more curious, Elizabeth. Why don't you open it now and satisfy my curiosity?"
Elizabeth took a knife and cut open the packaging tape. Inside, she saw a bunch of melted ice packs.
She suddenly felt a bit nervous, instinctively sensing that whatever was inside wouldn't be pleasant. After all, she had recently had some bad experiences.
She carefully opened the small black bag inside. The moment she saw what was inside, she couldn't help but gag. She fought back the nausea and stood up abruptly. "Sarah, we need to go."
Sarah saw the contents too and turned pale with fear. She stood up and grabbed Elizabeth's arm. "Elizabeth, are you okay? You look terrible."
Elizabeth struggled to stay conscious. "Sarah, whose do you think it is?"
Sarah gripped Elizabeth's arm tightly. "Elizabeth, do you already have an idea?"
At that moment, Elizabeth's phone rang again.
The usually cheerful ringtone now startled both of them.
Elizabeth clutched her chest, trying to calm her racing heart. She glanced at the caller ID—it was an international number.
With trembling hands, she swiped to answer.
A slightly aged male voice spoke. "Ms. Jones, I believe you've received my gift. Do you like it?"
Elizabeth's hand shook as she brought the phone to her ear, her voice trembling. "Who are you? What do you want? What have you done to Louis?"
The man laughed heartily, as if speaking to someone nearby. "See, didn't you say she didn't care about you? Just a small ring finger, and she knows it's you. You still think she doesn't care?"
A suppressed cry of pain came from the other end.
Elizabeth's heart filled with fear. "Louis? Louis, are you there? Are you okay?"
The man continued to laugh, a chilling sound. "Ms. Jones, do you want to save your Louis? He's here, missing you, wanting you to come and be with him."
Louis's pained voice came through. "Elizabeth, don't come! I'm fine!"
The phone transmitted the sounds of punches and kicks, accompanied by Louis's groans of pain.
Elizabeth could barely stand. She forced herself to stay conscious. "Let Louis talk! I need to know he's safe!"
