Chapter 90 She Threw Herself at Him
Everyone laughed, teasing Michael.
They all blew out the candles together.
Elizabeth leaned in close to Michael. "It's not cold here. Why don't you take off the scarf? It's a pain to eat with it on. You can put it back on later."
Michael smiled and nodded. "Yeah, you're right."
He took off the scarf, folded it neatly, and put it back in his bag.
Everyone around was surprised. "Is Michael sick? Why's he being so obedient?"
They all sat together, not saying much, but their eyes did the talking.
At the table, everyone was laughing and joking around.
Matthew smeared some cream on Michael's face.
Michael, unusually in a good mood, merely gave him a glare. Normally, no one would dare to tease Michael like that.
After dinner, Matthew suggested playing cards.
Susan found a deck for them.
The group started playing in the living room.
Michael wheeled himself over to a bored, yawning Elizabeth.
"Not into this? Let's get out of here," Michael whispered.
Elizabeth's eyes lit up, looking at him gratefully.
Michael didn't forget to put his scarf back on.
Elizabeth helped push his wheelchair.
Michael asked, "Didn't get enough to eat earlier?"
"How'd you know?" Elizabeth asked.
"I saw you barely ate. Not a fan of Susan's cooking?" Michael asked.
"No, I had something before I came, so I wasn't that hungry," Elizabeth replied.
"Not really, I had something to eat before I came, so I'm not very hungry," Elizabeth explained. "I should have come on an empty stomach. Susan's cooking is delicious, and it's been a long time since I had it."
"Are you hungry now?" Michael asked. "We can go out and find something to eat. What would you like?"
"It's cold, let's get some beef vegetable soup," Elizabeth said hopefully.
"Alright, let's go," Michael said.
On the way, Michael finally couldn't resist asking Qin An'an the question that had been troubling him for the past few days.
He asked, "Why didn't you come to Sunset Heights to see me before? Didn't want to come back or see me?"
Elizabeth lowered her head. "It's not that. I thought about it every day. But you were injured, in the hospital, with bodyguards around. When I saw that, I left. Later, I was busy knitting your scarf, wanted to finish it before your birthday."
Michael asked, a bit hurt, "Then why didn't you come see me after I got back here?"
Elizabeth, also a bit hurt, said, "I sent you messages and waited, but you never replied. I thought if you didn't bother to reply, you wouldn't want to see me. So I didn't come. I was scared you'd reject me, and it'd be awkward."
Michael stopped and turned his head. "How could you think that? Alright, my bad. Let's go get that beef vegetable soup."
They chatted while walking, not realizing they had wandered onto a small path.
They talked on and off. To hear Michael better, Elizabeth occasionally leaned in closer.
Suddenly, some people rushed over when they weren't paying attention.
Only then did they realized that they were in a spot with lots of trees, away from the crowd.
These guys showed up looking fierce, each holding a thick wooden stick.
It was clear they came prepared.
Without a word, they raised their sticks and swung at Michael.
Elizabeth didn't have time to think. Her first reaction was to push the wheelchair hard behind her, then she wrapped her arms around Michael, shielding him with her body.
Her mind went blank. It was pure instinct.
But the expected pain didn't come.
Suddenly, several bodyguards in black emerged from the woods and quickly took down the attackers.
Those guys probably never thought Michael always had bodyguards secretly protecting him.
The bodyguards pinned them to the ground, tied their hands, and made them kneel in front of Michael.
One of the bodyguards asked, "Mr. Thomas, what should we do with them?"
Michael's eyes were cold, his gaze like poisoned arrows. "Take them back first. I want to know who's behind this."
The bodyguards responded in unison, "Yes, Mr. Thomas."
The sudden turn of events made Elizabeth's legs weak, her lips pale, and her hands tremble.
After the bodyguards took the attackers away, Elizabeth asked, trembling, "Were those people here to kill you?"
Michael gently held her hands, stroking the back of her hand. "Sorry for scaring you."
He gently pulled Elizabeth onto his lap, resting her head on his shoulder. He gently embraced her.
"It's okay now. Let's go get that beef vegetable soup. You must be starving," Michael comforted her.
Elizabeth leaned her head against Michael's chest, wrapping her arms around him. "Michael, do you often face such dangers? If those bodyguards weren't with you, would you have died?"
Michael said, "Don't worry, I'm not that easy to kill."
At that moment, Elizabeth thought about the possibility of Michael leaving her forever, and her heart did a flip.
She couldn't accept Michael's death.
She would even rather trade her life for Michael's safety without any regrets.
Elizabeth leaned against Michael and said softly, "Michael, why don't we go back?"
Michael looked at her gently and asked, "Are you scared? Don't worry, with the bodyguards protecting me, nothing will happen. I promised to take you for beef vegetable soup, but if you're really scared, we can go back to the villa and eat. I'll call someone to bring it over."
Elizabeth stood up, turned the wheelchair around, and pushed Michael back. "Let's go back and eat."
Michael made a phone call. Then he pulled Elizabeth over to sit on his lap.
Michael hit the button on his electric wheelchair.
The wheelchair zoomed down the road like a mini car.
