Chapter 261 Conviction
Michael felt like he was running on empty, his head hanging low. In a raspy voice, he asked, "Can I go in and see her?"
The doctor nodded, "Sure. She'll be moved to the morgue soon. Go say your goodbyes."
Michael got up and trudged in, each step feeling like a ton of bricks.
Mary had always cared about him, but he rarely showed her any kindness. Every time he spoke to her, he wore a cold expression.
Regret, guilt, and deep sorrow filled Michael's heart.
He didn't have a mom anymore.
Mary's eyes were wide open, frozen in disbelief.
Michael softly said, "Mom, is there something you want to say? Are you not at peace? Do you want me to find out what really happened? Did someone hurt you?"
Behind him, Anthony walked in slowly. "Michael, I need to tell you something..."
Michael shot him a cold look.
Anthony, scared by the glare, dropped the phone he was holding.
Michael glanced down at the phone on the floor; it was Mary's.
He glared at Anthony and demanded, "Why do you have Mom's phone?"
Anthony, trembling, replied, "Michael, I think I heard Grandma on the phone before it happened. She sounded really angry and upset. It might've spiked her blood pressure."
Michael frowned, "Who was she talking to?"
Anthony picked up the phone and handed it to Michael, nervously saying, "Elizabeth..."
Michael checked the call log on Mary's phone, and sure enough, Elizabeth's name was at the top.
The call lasted seven minutes! What could they have talked about for that long?
As far as he knew, they didn't interact much.
Michael didn't waste any time. He used Mary's phone to call Elizabeth. He needed to know what they talked about that could've led to Mary's death!
In the president's office at the Jones Group, Elizabeth was deep in thought, resting her chin on her hand.
She was figuring out how to refuse Mary's unreasonable demands if she called again.
Mary had secretly done a paternity test for Nolan and Michael without telling her.
Elizabeth had been so focused on keeping Michael from finding out the truth, she hadn't guarded against Mary.
Mary had called Elizabeth that morning, demanding she hand over custody of Nolan.
Mary had angrily told Elizabeth, "I don't know why you're hiding our Thomas family child. But now I know Nolan is Michael's son. Our Thomas family child can't be left outside; he must be raised by us! Elizabeth, you'd better be smart and hand over the child. Otherwise, when we go to court, it won't look good for you! You will definitely lose!"
Elizabeth was so mad she couldn't concentrate on her work.
Now, her phone rang again. When she picked it up, she saw that it was still Mary calling.
She answered, annoyed, "Are you done yet? Can you stop making such unreasonable and shameless demands just because you're older?"
But it wasn't Mary's voice she heard. It was Michael's. "Elizabeth, what did my mom say to you on the phone?"
Elizabeth froze, cold sweat breaking out on her forehead.
'Michael? Why is he using Mary's phone? Did Mary tell him about the paternity test results? Is he calling to take the child back?' Elizabeth's mind was racing.
No way. If Michael knew the truth, he wouldn't be asking questions. He'd come straight to her place, dragging her and the kids away.
So, what was going on? Did something happen to Mary?
No, Mary had called her that morning, sounding as strong as ever.
Something was wrong. Elizabeth's eyes widened, and she shot up from her chair.
In the last minute of the call, she had heard a young man and woman on Mary's end.
Then Mary shouted, and it went silent.
But Elizabeth had just wanted to end the call, so she hung up.
Michael, still waiting for her answer, was losing patience. "Elizabeth! What are you stalling for? What did you talk about on the phone?" he shouted.
Elizabeth wasn't about to spill the beans. Was she supposed to admit that Mary had done a paternity test and threatened her to hand over the kid?
No way.
So she snapped back, "None of your business! If you really want to know, why don't you ask her directly? Wouldn't that be faster?"
Michael went silent for a moment.
Then, through gritted teeth, filled with grief and anger, he said, "Elizabeth, she is dead! How do you expect me to ask her?"
Elizabeth was stunned.
Mary was dead? She had really had an accident?
Was her death related to that young man and woman?
Elizabeth was still processing.
Michael pressed on. "Elizabeth! Answer me! What did you talk about that could have upset her so much that she died?"
Elizabeth tried to stay calm. "Michael, don't get agitated. Our conversation had nothing to do with her accident. You should investigate who she interacted with this morning."
But Michael wasn't having it. "Stop making excuses. I just want to know the truth. Tell me what you talked about," he demanded.
His lips were tightly pressed together, and he was barely holding back his anger. If Elizabeth were in front of him, he might have strangled her.
Elizabeth rubbed her forehead in frustration. "Michael, calm down and listen. I know Mary's death is a huge blow. But the most important thing now is not the phone call. It's finding the culprit. I suspect she was murdered!"
Michael shot back, "Even if it was murder, it has something to do with you!"
Elizabeth was so angry she started pacing. She really wanted to punch him in the head.
He usually seemed smart, so why was he being so stupid now?
She snapped, "All I can say is that she called me. I didn't do anything. Even if something happened to her, it had nothing to do with me. Out of respect for her passing, I don't want to speak ill of her. But she did curse at me on the phone..."
Before she could finish, Michael cut in, "I knew it! Elizabeth! My mom's death is related to you! Just wait! I will avenge her! You better get to Tomorrow's Cure Hospital right now and apologize in front of her body!"
Elizabeth was dumbfounded.
This lunatic Michael had just arbitrarily convicted her?
