Chapter 411 I Want You to Marry Her

In the darkness, Michael stared intently at the message.

It was from Samuel: [Hey Michael, it's Samuel. I got your medical diagnosis. Wanna keep it under wraps? I bet you do. So, you gotta agree to my terms. First off, you need to marry Margaret. You know she's scarred from the burns, right? Margaret's a mess now, and nobody wants to marry her. But I want you to.]

Attached was a photo of the red box and a yellowed piece of paper.

Michael clenched his teeth, his chest burning with rage. His grip on the phone tightened, almost crushing it.

That damn Samuel, why didn't he die in the explosion that night? Why did he have to survive?

Marry Margaret? No way!

He wouldn't have married her even when she was beautiful, let alone now that she's disfigured.

He had a woman he loved. Why should he force himself to marry someone he didn't love? Especially when her brother was his enemy. How would they get along after marriage?

Michael put his phone on silent mode and was about to place it back on the nightstand when another message came through.

He opened it. It was from Samuel again.

[Michael, I know you won't be threatened by me. But what about Elizabeth? Are you sure she'll accept a mentally ill husband? Can you bear her looking at you differently? Are you sure your kids would want a father with a mental illness? If you agree to my conditions, I won't tell Elizabeth about this. Think it over.]

Michael struggled to control his emotions, closed his eyes, and forced himself to sleep.

The next morning, Sarah woke up and was startled to see Michael sitting in the living room.

"Michael? Are you a ghost? When did you get here?"

Michael took a sip of his coffee. "While you were passed out."

Sarah covered her mouth, feeling guilty.

She had indeed drunk too much last night and didn't remember how she got back to her room. But since this was Elizabeth's house, she wasn't worried. Elizabeth would have taken care of her.

She was just concerned about whether she had acted out while drunk and if Michael had seen her shouting David's name in a fit of drunkenness.

Would Michael tell David about it?

In the past, she never got drunk and lost control. David had never seen her like that.

She had decided to break up with David completely, so she didn't want to hold him back.

Elizabeth came out of her room and greeted her. "Good morning, Sarah. Merry Christmas!"

Sarah walked over. "Merry Christmas, Elizabeth! I should be going."

Elizabeth was surprised and grabbed her hand. "Didn't we agree to spend Christmas together? Why are you leaving so early?"

Sarah leaned in and whispered, "I didn't know Michael would be here. I'm afraid he'll tell David."

Elizabeth looked a bit embarrassed. "I'm sorry, Sarah. I didn't think it through."

Sarah waved it off. "It's fine. I'm leaving. You two rarely get to be together. Enjoy Christmas!"

Michael suddenly spoke up. "Sarah."

Sarah was taken aback. She had a feeling that whatever Michael was about to say wouldn't be good news.

Her voice trembled slightly. "What is it?"

Michael's expression remained calm. "I don't know if I should tell you, but David is engaged."

Sarah was stunned.

How long had it been since their divorce? And he was already engaged? David had done so many crazy things to avoid the divorce, making such a fuss. She thought he loved her deeply.

Sarah forced a bitter smile. "Well, thanks for letting me know. He changed his number. I can't reach him."

Michael's eyes were probing. "Didn't you block him? Why do you care if he changed his number?"

Sarah was about to explain that she blocked him to stop him from bothering her, but she held back and said nothing.

She turned away, holding back tears, her heart aching.

Elizabeth couldn't hold back. "Michael! What are you saying? Sarah and David were together for years. She left for David's sake. You know what his parents are like better than I do! They pressured David to have kids every day. Sarah left voluntarily. If she hadn't, would she have waited for David to break with his parents over her? Is that what she wanted?"

She continued indignantly, "Even if David loved her at first, what about a year or two later? His parents would keep pressuring him for kids. Over time, can you guarantee he wouldn't be influenced? What would Sarah do then? Deal with in-laws who dislike her and a husband whose love fades? Would she be happy?"

This was exactly what Sarah had always worried about. Hearing it from Elizabeth felt like reopening an old wound. Sarah couldn't hold back her tears, her shoulders shaking as she sobbed quietly.

Elizabeth gently hugged her. "Sarah, don't be sad. I understand your pain. I'll always be on your side."

Sarah finally broke down, crying loudly.

Elizabeth patted her back gently. "Sarah, never forget, I'm your best friend."

She glanced at Michael. "I can imagine if someone told me Michael was marrying another woman, you'd stand by me, feeling it was unfair."

Michael, who had been sitting calmly on the couch, suddenly looked uncomfortable. He cleared his throat and stood up.

"Sarah, I'm sorry for my attitude earlier. I didn't consider your feelings. But David's engagement is set. I thought you should know."

He walked outside.

Elizabeth grabbed some tissues and helped Sarah wipe her tears.

Sarah's eyes were swollen from crying. She apologized to Elizabeth. "Elizabeth, I'm sorry. I want to go home."

Elizabeth called the driver to take Sarah home.

Breakfast was already on the table. Michael had returned. They sat down to have breakfast with the kids.

Elizabeth asked Susan, "Where's Dean today? I didn't see him in his room."

Michael replied quietly, "He went to Celestria."

Elizabeth was surprised. "Why didn't he tell me? Did something happen?"
