Chapter 173 A Secret for Another Secret
Elizabeth shot Calla a look and said, "You know you can't be too greedy, right? People who do bad stuff always get what's coming to them. Eloise has had a surgery already, hasn't she? Were they successful? How long did they take? What tools did you use? Who were your assistants? Who handled the anesthesia? Who was the nurse helping you out? Do you even know all these details?"
Elizabeth's gaze turned icy as she looked at Calla.
Calla felt a cold sweat trickle down her back.
She stared at Elizabeth, horrified.
With a trembling finger, she pointed at Elizabeth. "Elizabeth, what are you getting at? Do you know all this?"
A hint of sarcasm appeared at the corner of Elizabeth's mouth. "I'd suggest you keep your mouth shut. Don't stick your nose where it doesn't belong. Don't say things you shouldn't. Otherwise, you might end up hurting yourself, maybe even risking your life. Remember what you did to make Michael your boyfriend? You know that spot was never yours. You didn't even do the surgery, but you took all the credit. Should I call you bold? Or just plain stupid? Ever thought about what would happen if Michael found out the truth? Do you think he would let you off? You won't get Michael's money, let alone Michael himself. You might lose everything!"
Calla's arrogance vanished, and her face fell.
She slumped into the chair, her back weak against it.
Panting slightly, she asked Elizabeth, her voice shaking, "Elizabeth, I just want to know, how do you know all this? Did you do Eloise's surgery?"
Elizabeth was about to deny it.
But Calla was already shaking her head in terror. "No way! Absolutely no way! I've been in the hospital's neurology department for years, and even I wasn't confident about this surgery. You? You haven't been in Ms. Johnson's lab for years. You were working at a tech company. You never had the chance to touch a scalpel. So it definitely wasn't you. Tell me, who was it? Do you know him? Did he send you to threaten me? Does he want money, or what? Spill it!"
Elizabeth said, "Do you think everyone is like you? Obsessed with money? Obsessed with Michael? If that person wanted money, he could've just taken Michael's online reward. Why go through all this trouble to give you the credit and then have you give him the money?"
Calla still wanted to know who that person was. "You still haven't told me, who is this person? What does he want?"
"He doesn't want anything. He's a retired old professor. He saw Eloise's case and got interested, so he did the surgery for fun. He doesn't need money," Elizabeth said.
Calla visibly relaxed.
Her tone softened, "Then, what about you? What do you want? You know my secret, I don't believe you have no demands."
Elizabeth shook her head. "You know one of my secrets, and I know yours. How about we agree to keep each other's secrets? I'll stay away from Michael. You don't mess with my life. Deal?"
Calla had intended to use the secrets she knew to blackmail Elizabeth, but she hadn't expected this outcome. She could only resolve herself and stand up. "Alright. It's a deal. We won't expose each other."
She moved her chair, grabbed her bag, and walked out of the restaurant.
Just as Elizabeth was about to stand up, her phone rang. It was Dean.
She answered, "Hey, Dean."
"Elizabeth, where are you? Even with traffic, you should be here by now. Do you need me to come get you?"
Elizabeth replied softly, "No need, Dean. I haven't eaten all day, and I'm starving. I stopped by a restaurant to grab a bite. I'll be at the banquet hall in 20 minutes."
Dean sounded worried, "What? You haven't eaten all day? Elizabeth, what have you been up to? You've been so secretive lately. Leaving early, coming back late. Whether at home or at the office, I hardly see you. Are you starting another company and planning to leave me out?"
Hearing Dean teasing her, Elizabeth chuckled, "What are you talking about? I don't have that kind of energy or money."
Dean sighed, "Alright. But it's good you're eating something. You'll have to meet a lot of people at the banquet. Many will want to talk to you. You won't have time to eat then. Okay, I won't keep you. Come over when you're done. I'll hold the fort here."
After hanging up, Elizabeth put her phone in her bag, stood up, and headed for the door. As she stepped down the stairs, a sudden dizziness hit her, and she collapsed to the ground.
At the Celestial Garden Hotel's Emerald Hall, guests were arriving one after another.
Dean had The Jones Group employees greeting the guests.
He stood at the door, waiting for Elizabeth, but Elizabeth didn't show up.
Sarah came over and asked nervously, "Dean, have you seen Elizabeth?"
Dean mentioned that he had contacted her ten minutes ago, so she should be arriving soon. Both of them stood by the door, waiting.
Meanwhile, at the Celestial Garden Hotel's Presidential Suite, Michael called Daniel.
"Daniel, how's the surveillance going? Has Elizabeth shown up?"
Daniel, wearing an earpiece, kept his eyes fixed on the entrance of Elizabeth's birthday banquet hall.
He was sitting in The Cozy Banquet Room opposite the Emerald Hall.
When Michael found out that he, Matthew, Daniel, and David didn't receive invitations to Elizabeth's birthday banquet, he booked The Cozy Banquet Room.
The Cozy Banquet Room was directly opposite the hall where Elizabeth's birthday banquet was being held, on the second floor.
From the second-floor window, everything in the Emerald Hall was clearly visible.
The Cozy Banquet Room was a small private room. The outer hall was for dining, and the inner room was a guest room for resting.
Michael had Daniel stationed there while he went to his long-term suite at the hotel, the Presidential Suite on the top floor.
