Chapter 66 I Won't Hate You Once You Wake Up

Elizabeth was storming off in a huff when Michael, out of nowhere, shoved her hard, sending her crashing to the ground.

Fuming, she was about to spin around and give him a piece of her mind when she saw Michael was already trapped under a sheet of metal.

Aghast, She lay there, stunned for a moment.

Then she scrambled over to him, grabbed his shoulders, and whimpered, "Michael, are you okay?"

Michael's face twisted in anguish, sweat already beading on his forehead, seemingly telling her that he wasn't feeling well.

Elizabeth gritted her teeth and shoved the metal sheet off him.

Blood was seeping through his leg.

Tears welled up in her eyes and trickled down.

Michael, fighting through the pain, managed to say, "Call 911."

And then he passed out.

Elizabeth was in full-blown panic mode. She fumbled for her phone and dialed 911, "Hello, emergency? We're at the entrance of Willow Springs Estates on Maple Avenue. Someone's hurt and unconscious. Send an ambulance, quick. Yes, I'll be here."

She hung up, squatted down, holding his head, and gently wiped the sweat off Michael's face with her sleeve.

Even if he was knocked out, his brows were furrowed tight.

Elizabeth thought, 'That metal sheet was so heavy and sharp. It must've hurt like hell. His leg is still recovering, and now this. What should I do now?'

Doubt and guilty crept in.

Looking at his pained face, she felt remorseful and thought, 'Should I forgive him? What he did hurts me, but maybe it isn't unforgivable. He was trying to help save The Jones Group.'

That night, she must've really pushed his buttons, which explained why he lashed out.

Elizabeth held him close, her fingers gently tracing his brows, trying to smooth out the wrinkles.

Her tears fell on his face, and she quickly wiped them away.

She whispered, "Michael, please wake up. If you do, I won't hate you anymore."

The sound of the ambulance's siren drew nearer.

Medical personnel jumped out, pulled out a stretcher, and rushed over.

They quickly checked Michael over. After some tests, the doctor figured he had only external injuries and had passed out from the pain.

They lifted him onto the stretcher and into the ambulance. Elizabeth climbed in, too, heading to the hospital with them.

At the hospital, they rushed Michael into the emergency surgery room.

A doctor handed Elizabeth a surgical consent form and said, "The patient has a serious leg injury. We need to stitch it up. Are you a family member?"

Elizabeth nodded, "Yes, I'm his wife."

The doctor pointed to a spot on the form, "Please sign here so we can start the surgery."

With a shaky hand, Elizabeth signed her name.

The doctor took the form, nodded, and hastily went into the surgery room, closing the door behind him.

Elizabeth clutched the hem of her shirt and paced nervously in front of the emergency room, silently praying, 'Michael, you have to be okay.'

As she paced, she suddenly saw Margaret storming over.

Margaret, worried, made a beeline for Elizabeth, her face twisted in anger.

Elizabeth froze in attitude of confusion.

Margaret reached Elizabeth, raised her hand, and swung back to slap Elizabeth.

But she hesitated, remembering Michael's warning, and instead shoved Elizabeth hard on the shoulder, sending her to the ground.

Elizabeth held her belly, struggled to stand up, and shouted, "Margaret, are you crazy?"

Worried about the impact on the baby, she decided to find a nearby bench to sit down.

Then she sat on a nearby bench in no mood to fight.

Margaret clearly didn't want to let it go, her anger surging, "Elizabeth! Why is Michael always getting hurt when he's around you? What did you do to him? Why is he in a coma and hospitalized again? Tell me!"

The more Margaret spoke, the angrier she became, reaching the peak of her fury. She stepped forward, grabbed Elizabeth's shoulders, and shook her, as if trying to prove something, "Elizabeth, I am the one who has been by his side the longest! I've been so good to him. And you? What have you done to him? He loves you so much, but you don't love him at all. You've carried someone else's child! Now he's hurt! Why does he love you and not me?"

Elizabeth stayed silent, feeling no need to explain herself to Margaret.

Margaret suddenly broke down, collapsing onto a nearby bench, covering her face and crying.

A nurse came out of a nearby office and said, "Ma'am, this is a hospital. The patient is in surgery, and there are other families and patients here. Please keep your voice down."

Margaret looked up, and nodded woodenly, "I'm sorry. I got too emotional."

The nurse patted her shoulder, "It's okay. We understand. But please consider the other families here."

Margaret bowed her head, "I'm sorry."

She wiped the tears from her face.

Elizabeth looked at her. Margaret, usually so put together, now looked like a mess. Her makeup was smudged, tears had streaked her eyeliner and mascara, making her look both vulnerable and defiant, pitiful yet proud.

Margaret grabbed Elizabeth's arm and hissed menacingly, "Come with me! We'll talk outside!"

Elizabeth looked up at the indicator light of the operating room. The light was still on, showing "In Surgery." This meant that Michael's operation was not yet finished.
