Chapter 493 Dislike Her
Janna glared at him. "Jump to conclusions? You're holding her shopping bag. You two walked in together. She even has her own room upstairs. And you still want to say your relationship is simple?"
Matthew ran his hands through his hair, pacing around the room. "Mom! Just because she lives here doesn't mean our relationship is complicated. I'm just letting her stay here temporarily! Our relationship couldn't be simpler. She's just my tenant, nothing more! Stop overthinking it!"
Janna slapped Matthew on the back. "Matthew! You need to get your act together! You're not getting any younger. When are you planning to date and get married? Look at Michael, he already has three kids! And you? You haven't even had a serious relationship!"
Matthew argued, "Mom! Even if I were to date, I'd want to find a girl I actually like, right? How could Sherry be a match for me? She doesn't have the looks, the body, or the education. Why would you think your son would like a girl like that? If she weren't Michael's sister, do you think I'd let her stay here? Girls like her are a dime a dozen on the street."
Janna's enthusiasm deflated. "Is that really true? You really don't like her?"
Matthew, exasperated, replied, "Yes, it's true. Absolutely true."
Janna, still not convinced, pressed on. "But you said she's Michael's sister. You and Michael are so close, how could you not like his sister? Considering the kind of family she comes from, she can't be that bad."
Matthew sat on the couch, crossing his legs and leaning back. "Sherry isn't really part of the Thomas family. She and Michael only share half the same blood."
Janna sat next to him. "If she's Michael's sister, why isn't he taking care of her? Why did he send her to you?"
"Michael just got married. He's still in the honeymoon phase with Elizabeth. He doesn't want to deal with anyone else."
"Since she's staying with you, you need to take good care of her. Whether you like her or not, you agreed to help, so you need to do it properly."
Matthew stood up, pushing Janna towards the door. "Mom, I got it. Do you have anything else to say? If not, go back and keep Dad company."
As Matthew pushed Janna out the door, they saw Sherry standing there, about to knock.
Sherry's hand was still in mid-air.
Matthew felt a bit awkward. He wasn't sure if she had heard what he just said.
To break the tension, he gruffly asked, "What are you doing at my door? Got some ulterior motive?"
Sherry's face was unreadable. She handed him a paper bag. "Thanks for the dress. I didn't remove the tag. You can return it to the store. I saw the price, and it's too expensive for me."
Matthew frowned, waving his hand dismissively. "It's fine! Consider it a gift. You don't need to return it."
Sherry insisted, "We're not related, and I'm just staying here temporarily. I can't accept such an expensive gift. If you think returning it is embarrassing, give me the receipt, and I'll return it myself and give you the money."
Matthew felt a bit annoyed. Why was Sherry so stubborn? He said she didn't need to return it, yet she kept going on about it.
Janna stepped in to ease the tension. She held Sherry's hand and smiled. "Sherry, since Matthew said it's a gift, just accept it. If you don't want to accept it from him, consider it a gift from me. I liked you the moment I saw you. I came in a hurry and didn't prepare anything, so let this dress be my gift to you."
Sherry bit her lower lip, torn.
She used to be able to afford such clothes. Jesse was generous with both his children, never hesitating to spend money on her and Philip.
But now, she understood her difficult situation. Her father was in prison, Philip had taken all the family's money and left, and Quinn was missing.
She had no job, no income, and very little money in her account. She had to be careful with every purchase.
Matthew wasn't her family. If he gave her something, she would have to reciprocate. But how could she afford to?
The elegantly dressed woman in front of her was so kind, making it hard for Sherry to refuse.
While Sherry was still conflicted, Matthew quickly opened the bag, took out the dress, and tore off the tag.
The series of actions was so smooth that Sherry didn't have time to react.
When she realized the dress couldn't be returned, she stared wide-eyed at Matthew.
