Chapter 9 Stay and Continue Being Mrs. Thomas
She'd packed her bags two nights ago, ready to bounce at any moment.
"Go marry the chick you like!" She'd made up her mind and felt solid about it.
Michael squinted, "You think you're blameless here?"
"It was my bad for using your computer without asking." Elizabeth tried to keep her cool, "I've been punished, so we're square. Just let me know when the divorce papers are ready, and I'll come sign 'em."
Seeing how eager she was to cut ties, Michael felt a weird irritation bubbling up.
But his words were ice-cold, "Did I say your punishment was over?"
Elizabeth was floored by his words.
She stared in disbelief at Michael, who was fuming in his wheelchair.
Was he never gonna let this go?
She'd already said sorry.
And she'd been locked up and starved for two days.
What more did he want?
What crime had she committed that was so unforgivable?
Did he have to be such a grudge-holder?
All 'cause she used his computer without asking and stumbled on his secrets?
Michael was seriously preposterous.
She needed to get out, and fast.
"As it stands, it seems staying by my side is the most painful thing for you. So stay and continue being Mrs. Thomas!" Michael's tone was all command, "This is your punishment. The divorce will happen, but not now."
With that, he signaled the bodyguard to push his wheelchair and rolled out.
Elizabeth watched him leave, gritting her teeth in anger.
What was this?
He was the one who wanted the divorce first.
Now that she offered one, he just refused it?
Michael was seriously a piece of work!
Elizabeth was silently cursing when she suddenly felt dizzy.
Her brain felt foggy, she was lightheaded, her chest tight, and she was short of breath. She felt weak all over.
She quickly went back to her room and crashed on the bed.
After lying down, she started to feel better.
She also calmed down.
She could think things through.
Michael didn't refuse to divorce her.
It was just that Mary was in the hospital again.
Mary had high blood pressure and couldn't handle stress.
He didn't want to risk Mary's health, so he was putting the divorce on hold.
Once Mary was better, he'd definitely agree.
Thinking of this, she felt a lot more at ease.
But given the situation, she'd have to wait a bit.
She should wait for Mary to get out of the hospital.
A week later.
Her body had mostly bounced back.
After breakfast, she went to the hospital alone for a follow-up.
She had a feeling that after all the drama, the baby in her belly was probably gone.
At the hospital, the doc told her to get an ultrasound.
Lying on the exam bed, Elizabeth felt edgy.
At first, she thought about getting rid of the baby.
But now, thinking about how the baby had picked her as a mom and then just left quietly truly gave her a jolt of sadness.
Her heart was seriously aching.
She shut her eyes, and tears started leaking out.
She asked, choking up, "Doc, is my baby gone?"
The doctor, holding the ultrasound probe, was all focused on her uterus, "Why would you think that?"
"I was starved for two days, and the baby wasn't doing great to begin with," Elizabeth replied.
The doc didn't seem worried, "It's nothing. Some pregnant women with bad morning sickness barely eat for a whole month."
Elizabeth's eyes popped open, filled with hope, "Doc, you mean my baby..."
The doc said, "Congrats! You have two gestational sacs in your uterus; you're having twins."
Last check-up, there was no sign of two sacs.
In just a week, now she had two babies in her belly.
Elizabeth took the ultrasound report to the outpatient doc.
The doc told her that the odds of having twins were super low.
If she miscarried this time, she might never have twins again.
Elizabeth smiled bitterly inside, knowing this was all the Thomas Family's private doc's doing.
When they implanted the fertilized eggs, they didn't tell her she'd be having twins.
Maybe, to them, she was just a baby-making machine for the Thomas Family.
Forget being Mrs. Thomas, she probably wasn't even seen as a real person in their eyes.
She looked at the report in her hands, sitting on a bench in the hallway, lost in thought.
To have the babies or not, it was all up to her now.
After an hour of zoning out in the hospital, her phone rang.
She pulled out her phone, stood up, and answered.
"Elizabeth, your dad is dying! Get home quick!" On the other end, Nancy's voice was hoarse and urgent.
Elizabeth was stunned.
Robert was dying?
How could this be?
She knew Robert had been hospitalized after collapsing from stress over the company and had missed her wedding.
Was he really that sick?
Elizabeth's mind was spinning.
She didn't have a good relationship with Robert because of his cheating on her mom, and she could never forgive him.
But hearing he was on his deathbed, her heart suddenly felt like it was being stabbed.
She rushed to the Jones Family, finding the living room in chaos.
Nancy led her to the master bedroom.
Robert lay on the bed, his face pale, breathing heavily, his eyes half-closed.
When he saw Elizabeth, his eyes lit up for a moment.
He weakly reached out to her from a distance.
His face showed a pleading expression.
Seeing Robert like this, Elizabeth's eyes instantly filled with tears.
