Chapter 149 They Are Michael's Children
"Michael, I think my wound's infected. I've got a fever and feel super dizzy." Calla leaned her head against Michael's chest.
Without a word, Michael scooped her up in one smooth motion.
A smug smile subtly appeared on Carla's face.
She reached out with her good hand and wrapped it around Michael's neck.
Michael told the driver to head straight to the hospital.
The burn specialist said Calla's wound hadn't been treated in time and was already infected. It needed to be disinfected again, treated with anti-inflammatory meds, and bandaged up.
Michael looked at Calla curiously, "Didn't you disinfect it right when you got back to the villa? I thought, with all your years of experience as a doctor, you'd know these basic medical principles."
Calla raised her hand in frustration, tears welling up in her eyes. "When I got back, it hurt so much, and I had a fever. My mind was all fuzzy. I couldn't take care of it."
Michael didn't push it further. He frowned and asked the doctor, "How long will it take for her wound to heal?"
The doctor replied while treating Calla's wound, "Her original burn was small and could've healed completely within a week. But now that it's infected, it's hard to say. Let's treat it with antibiotics and burn ointment first and see."
Michael asked, worried, "Will it affect the function of her hand after it heals?"
The doctor said in a professional tone, "The burn isn't deep; it only reached the dermis. It won't affect the function of her hand at all after it heals."
Michael felt relieved. If Calla's hand function was affected, it would definitely impact Eloise's surgery outcome.
Calla remained silent, quietly contemplating her plan.
It was completely dark outside. Elizabeth returned to Whispering Pines Estates. She parked the car in the garage. Sarah called her, "Elizabeth, where are you?"
Elizabeth got out of the car. "I just got out of the car. I'm in the garage. I'll be home soon."
Sarah said, "Then hurry back. Nancy's already made dinner, and we're just waiting for you."
Elizabeth was puzzled.
Sarah said, "Hurry up. I'm hanging up now. I'm going to wash my hands."
Elizabeth stopped in her tracks. "Sarah, where are you?"
Sarah replied, "At your house, of course. Where else? Didn't you see my car parked at your front door? Hurry up. Pearl and Nolan are hungry."
Elizabeth was surprised.
She put away her phone and ran into the villa's dining room.
Sarah was helping Nancy set the table.
Nancy said, "Elizabeth, you're back. Go wash your hands. Dinner's ready."
Elizabeth's mind was buzzing.
Sarah had come over without any notice. She must have already seen the two kids.
At this point, she could no longer hide it and had to find a way to explain everything to Sarah.
Hearing the sound of Elizabeth coming in, Pearl and Nolan ran out of their room.
Pearl hugged Elizabeth's leg. "Mom, you're finally back. Nolan and I have been waiting for you for so long."
Nolan stood silently beside her, looking at Elizabeth.
Elizabeth pulled Nolan over and hugged both children. She kissed them on their foreheads.
Pearl still hugged Elizabeth. "Mom, Sarah brought us gifts. A big box of building blocks. Nolan and I can play with them for a long time."
Nolan didn't play with toys much, but he loved building blocks.
Elizabeth smiled at the children. "Did you thank Sarah?"
Pearl leaned against her. "Nolan and I both thanked her."
Elizabeth smiled at them. "Alright, let's eat first. You can play after dinner."
As she turned around, she saw Sarah standing behind her, leaning against the door frame, staring at her.
Elizabeth felt a pang of guilt and lowered her head awkwardly.
Seeing her like this, Sarah walked over and gently patted her shoulder. "Elizabeth, why the long face? Feeling guilty? You adopted kids, and I had to learn about it from David."
Elizabeth felt a bit embarrassed. "Sarah, I didn't mean to hide the kids from you. I just hadn't figured out how to tell you."
"Wash your hands first. It's late, and we should eat." Sarah hugged her. "I get it. You're worried that if I knew about Pearl and Nolan, I wouldn't be able to resist telling David, and then he wouldn't be able to resist telling Michael, right?"
Elizabeth lowered her head while washing her hands and replied, "Sarah, you know Michael doesn't like kids."
Sarah stood at the door, keeping her company. "I know. You don't have to feel so burdened. I understand you must have gone through a lot of internal struggle before deciding not to tell me. I know you well! I was wondering why you didn't invite me over after moving to a new house. Turns out it was because you had two beautiful kids hidden at home."
Elizabeth finished washing her hands and sat down at the dining table with Sarah.
Sarah lowered her voice and said, "But Elizabeth, even if you love kids, you didn't have to adopt two at once. Even with Nancy's help, you have to manage your studies, your company, and raise the kids. It must have been exhausting for you abroad! But I won't deny that Pearl and Nolan are truly gifts from heaven."
Elizabeth didn't know how to respond.
After dinner, Sarah and Elizabeth went to Elizabeth's room.
Sarah looked into Elizabeth's eyes. "Elizabeth, Pearl looks so much like you. And Nolan looks so much like Michael. There can't be such coincidences in the world. These two kids are about the same age and look alike. They must be twins, right?"
Elizabeth didn't speak, acquiescing.
Sarah continued to ask, "Elizabeth, they aren't adopted. They are your and Michael's biological children, right?"
Elizabeth looked up at her. "Sarah, I admit, they are Michael's biological children. The reason I didn't tell you before was that I was afraid you would tell David. Once David knows the kids' true identities, Michael will find out immediately."
Elizabeth's eyes were filled with distress. "You might not know, but Michael hates kids, especially his own. When I was pregnant, he forced me to have an abortion. He once said that if the kids were born, he would strangle them. You know him well. He always means what he says. So, I lied to him. I told him Nolan was adopted. And Pearl, he hasn't even seen her yet."
Sarah was shocked. "Is Michael crazy? How could he hate his own biological children? Especially when Pearl and Nolan are so adorable. I'd be too busy loving them; I can't imagine Michael even hurting them. He must have some psychological issues!"
Elizabeth looked at Sarah, her tone serious, "Sarah, I need to ask you a favor."
