Chapter 369 Questioning

Margaret's face was tight with tension. "Matthew, are you here to accuse me of something?"

Matthew frowned. "Why would you even ask that? It seems like you really did set me up at the dinner party, didn't you?"

"Was I just a pawn in your plan? You framed Elizabeth and made sure I overheard that woman's voice. You knew I couldn't keep it to myself and would tell Michael."

"Was I just another piece in your game? Margaret, did you really use my feelings and trust like that?"

Margaret avoided his gaze. "Matthew, I have no idea what you're talking about."

Matthew stood up, leaning on the table, looking down at her. "I wish you weren't involved. I wish you were still the bold and straightforward Margaret I used to know. You used to go after what you wanted openly, without resorting to underhanded tactics."

"Otherwise, I can't respect you. Why did Elizabeth hit Octavia? I think you know better than I do. The person pretending to be her was Octavia, wasn't it?"

Margaret stood up abruptly. "Matthew, what gives you the right to interrogate me like this? What are you trying to find out? You liking me is your business! Why do I have to respond to it?"

"The person I've always liked is Michael, and you know that! Why can't you go and like someone else? If you think I'm so terrible, then stop liking me! Did I ever ask you to like me? Why should I do things I don't want to just to please you?"

Matthew felt cornered. He suddenly realized he might have been wrong. He stammered, "It's not like that, Margaret. I'm not forcing you, and I never demanded you accept my feelings."

He continued, "Years ago, I said it clearly. You like Michael, and I like you. We each pursue who we like, but we shouldn't use deceitful means."

Margaret sneered. "I'm me, and Octavia is Octavia. She's an adult. I'm not her guardian. Does she need to report to me before doing anything? You're giving me too much credit!"

"If you think this is all related to Octavia, go confront her! Why come to me? If she causes trouble her whole life, do you expect me to protect her forever?"

Matthew was at a loss for words. Margaret's argument seemed reasonable. He had no evidence that Octavia was acting under her orders.

He straightened up, giving Margaret a long look. "Margaret, I still want to believe you're the vibrant woman you used to be. I'm leaving. Take care of yourself."

Margaret watched him leave, the door closing behind him. She collapsed into her chair.

There's no going back. Everything changed when she had her uterus removed to make Michael accept her.

Even she had become stubborn and obsessed.

Her remaining life was dedicated to winning Michael's love.

She sat up, clenched her fists, and encouraged herself. 'Yes! I'm doing all this for Michael. It's for love! I'm not wrong!'

She had no choice but to keep moving forward.

Resolute, she called Anthony. "Tomorrow at six in the evening, be ready."

Anthony replied, "Got it. No problem. I'll send you the location."

She hung up and immediately dialed another number. "Tomorrow at five in the evening, follow my orders."

A sinister voice responded, "No problem."

That evening, at Whispering Pines Estates, Sarah came to see Elizabeth.

Elizabeth was sorting through a mountain of items she had bought that day.

The living room carpet was covered with shopping bags.

Sarah was surprised by the pile and came over to help Elizabeth organize.

"Elizabeth, what's all this? I offered to help you shop for baby stuff before, and you said no. Now you've bought so much at once! It's like revenge shopping!"

Elizabeth sighed as she sorted. "Most of these things weren't bought by me. I only bought a small part of it."

Sarah was curious. "Then who bought the rest? Carter?"

Elizabeth glanced at her. "Sarah, what are you thinking? Carter wouldn't know what to buy for a baby."

Sarah's eyes widened. "Don't tell me Michael bought it!"

Elizabeth smirked. "Fine, I won't tell you."

Sarah leaned in. "What? Michael really bought it? He went to a baby store with you? I can't picture that!"

Elizabeth packed the essentials into a bag. "What's so hard to imagine? He's not a god. He's a regular person who eats, drinks, and sleeps. Why can't he buy baby stuff?"

Sarah nodded. "True. I always see him as so serious. He seems untouchable."

Elizabeth laughed. "Wait until you see him changing diapers. Will that shock you?"

Sarah spun around, grabbing Elizabeth's arm. "Changing diapers? Elizabeth, are you planning to get back together with him?"

Elizabeth pulled her hand away and continued packing. "No, we just agreed to co-parent. He missed out on Pearl and Nolan's childhood. They're distant from him now."

"He learned his lesson. He doesn't want the baby to be estranged too. So, he said he'll try to be a good dad and get the kids to accept him."

Sarah raised an eyebrow. "That's Michael for you, adaptable and determined."

Elizabeth shook her head with a smile. "Help me finish packing. There's so much to do."

Sarah laughed. "Sure, I'll help."

They chatted as they worked. The cook prepared dinner, and a servant brought it over.

After dinner, they continued packing until it got late.

Sarah got ready to leave, but Elizabeth stopped her. "Sarah, call David to pick you up. It's too late. I don't want you to be unsafe."

Sarah waved her off, stepping down the stairs. "No need. I know self-defense, remember? Even Michael's bodyguards might not be a match for me."

Elizabeth wasn't convinced and called over a bodyguard. "You and Joshua, escort Sarah home."

Sarah protested. "Elizabeth, it's not necessary."

Elizabeth insisted. "No. I have a bad feeling something's going to happen. Better safe than sorry."

She saw Sarah off. Joshua and the bodyguard escorted Sarah home.
