Chapter 322 Breakup
Margaret ended the call abruptly, without a hint of courtesy.
She sneered inwardly, 'Calla, it seems you've forgotten how arrogant you used to be in front of me. Now that Michael has abandoned you, you only have one last use left.'
Margaret opened her contacts and dialed a number. "Octavia Harper, are you ready? It's your turn."
In the CEO's office at The Jones Group, Carter came to visit.
Elizabeth greeted him with a smile. "Carter, what brings you here?"
Carter's face was full of concern. "Elizabeth, I just got out of the show and heard you went abroad to perform surgery on Silver King? You're pregnant and standing for so long must have been exhausting. Are you feeling better now?"
Elizabeth reassured him. "It's been several days! I'm perfectly fine. But what about you? Have you recovered enough to be running around on a show?"
Carter had previously told her about a reality show that invited him to participate, which was live-streamed and didn't allow participants to bring their phones.
At the time, Elizabeth was worried about his health and the possibility of an emergency where he couldn't contact his assistant, so she advised him not to go.
But Carter went anyway.
Elizabeth looked at him reproachfully. "Carter, didn't we agree you wouldn't go on the show? Your health can't handle it!"
Carter took her hand and spoke earnestly. "Elizabeth, I know you're worried about me, but I wanted to help you. The more I appear in public, the more recognition I get, and the better I can promote you."
Elizabeth was moved. "Carter, you really don't have to do this."
As they were talking, a cold male voice suddenly interrupted. "No wonder The Jones Group's business isn't doing well. The boss spends work hours flirting and dating celebrities."
Elizabeth turned towards the voice. "Michael? What are you doing here? Who let you up?"
Dean emerged from behind him, looking apologetic. "Sorry, Elizabeth. Michael called me, saying he had something for you, so I brought him up. I didn't know Carter was here too."
Carter smiled and greeted Dean, who quickly pulled him away.
"Dean, I haven't finished talking to Elizabeth..." Carter said, looking back at her.
Dean had already dragged him out of the office and closed the door. "You can talk later."
In the now quiet CEO's office, only Michael and Elizabeth remained.
The air seemed to thin, making it hard for Elizabeth to breathe.
Michael slammed a thermos onto her desk, startling her.
"Michael! What's wrong with you?"
Michael glared at her. "Elizabeth! Susan was worried you weren't getting enough nutrients during your pregnancy, so she made soup for you. I brought it over."
Elizabeth didn't back down. "If you brought it, just say so! Why are you yelling?"
Michael gritted his teeth. "You're carrying my child, yet you're here hugging another man in your office. Do you think I can tolerate that?"
Elizabeth glared back. "Explain yourself! How was I hugging him? Carter and I were just catching up. Did our conversation even last five minutes? Who are you to judge? If you can't tolerate it, go find someone else! You have plenty of backup girlfriends anyway!"
Michael's nostrils flared with anger, his chest heaving. "Elizabeth! You're heartless! Who helped arrange your rescue when you were kidnapped? Who brought Louis back?"
Elizabeth shot him a look. "Did I ask you to?"
Michael laughed bitterly, nodding. "Fine! Very well! Elizabeth, I've seen your true colors. You're truly fickle!"
Elizabeth scoffed. "Yes, I'm fickle! Go find your gentle Eloise! Your smart Calla! Your obedient Margaret! Anyone but me!"
Michael grabbed her arm and pinned her against the wall.
He leaned in, his arm braced beside her neck, trapping her between him and the wall.
His eyes were bloodshot as he stared at her. "Are you sure, Elizabeth? Don't regret this!"
Elizabeth turned her head away, refusing to look at him. "What is there to regret? You were never mine to begin with! I never had the right to demand anything from you! Your so-called concern for me is just for the baby I'm carrying! If I lost the baby, would you still care?"
Michael hadn't expected her to bring up losing the baby, his brow furrowing deeply. "Elizabeth, have you never wanted this child?"
With the conversation escalating, Elizabeth couldn't back down. Without thinking, she blurted out, "This isn't my child! It's my debt to you! Once the baby is born, we're done! No more ties, ever!"
As soon as the words left her mouth, Elizabeth regretted them. She couldn't possibly feel nothing for the baby growing inside her. She quickly turned to look at Michael.
Sure enough, he was struggling to contain his anger.
Elizabeth saw his tightly clenched fists.
She smirked coldly. "What, Michael? Are you going to hit me because I defied you?"
Michael gave her a cold look, then turned to stare out the window, his voice strained. "I don't hit women."
Still trapped by him, Elizabeth forcefully shook off his grip. "In your eyes, I'm nothing but a surrogate. Who I see and who I like has nothing to do with you! Just wait until the baby is born and come collect your child!"
Michael whipped around, glaring at her with a look that could kill. "Elizabeth, don't provoke me! It won't end well for you!"
He turned and stormed towards the door.
With his hand on the doorknob, he spoke without looking back. "Elizabeth, I'll do as you wish and find another woman!"
He yanked the door open and left.
The office door slammed shut, the sound echoing in Elizabeth's heart.
As the door closed, all her strength seemed to drain away. She slid down the wall, sitting on the floor.
How had things come to this between them?
