Chapter 456 Rooftop

If it weren't for the fact that she still intended to return that ring to Michael, she would have tossed it a long time ago.

She couldn't help it; every time she saw that ring, it made her feel uneasy. It was like a symbol of Michael's betrayal.

He had once promised, with such conviction, that he would stay and be with her and their three kids, that they would build a life together.

And what happened? He decided to marry Margaret instead.

Even though his wedding with Margaret was eventually called off, Elizabeth still felt uneasy.

There was a lack of communication and trust between them. Their relationship was unequal.

Now, she examined the new diamond ring on her finger, thought for a moment, then took it off and placed it back on the tray.

Her expression had become calm. "I've tried it on. The size is perfect, and I like the design. You can let Michael know."

The jeweler placed the ring back in its box, locked it in the safe, and respectfully said to Elizabeth, "Ms. Jones, we'll inform Mr. Thomas. Have a wonderful day and congratulations on your upcoming wedding!"

Elizabeth replied coolly, "Thanks. Goodbye."

Once they left, she was alone in the office. She dialed Michael's number.

Michael answered quickly, his voice filled with excitement. "Elizabeth, did you try on the ring? Do you like it?"

"I did. The size is perfect, and I really like your design."

Hearing this, Michael felt relieved.

He wanted to marry her as soon as possible. He hoped there would be no more obstacles before the wedding.

A landline phone rang on his end, and Elizabeth said softly, "You have another call. It sounds urgent. Go ahead."

Michael put his phone on speaker, placed it on the desk, and picked up the receiver, frowning. "What is it?"

His tone was a bit impatient, annoyed that this call was interrupting his conversation with Elizabeth.

He couldn't understand why he felt a bit uneasy. Elizabeth had said she liked the ring, but he hadn't detected any joy in her voice.

Maybe she was just tired lately?

On the other end, Elizabeth remained silent. Michael could only hear the sound of her typing on her keyboard.

From the receiver, the security chief's voice came through, sounding somewhat panicked. "Mr. Thomas! There's a big problem!"

Michael's frustration grew. "What is it?"

"Mr. Thomas, there's a woman on the rooftop. It looks like she's going to jump!"

Michael's frown deepened. "How did she get up there? Who gave her access?"

The security chief sounded helpless. "The staff on duty said the woman used to be the PR manager. She greeted the receptionist, and they let her in. Now she's on the rooftop."

"Have you called the police?"

"Yes, and we've also called for an ambulance. The police and emergency services are on their way."

Michael stood up. "Gather the security team. Half of you stay downstairs, and the other half come with me to the rooftop."

"Yes, Mr. Thomas."

Michael hung up the phone and picked up his cell.

Before he could say anything, Elizabeth's voice came through. "What's going on?"

Michael turned off the speaker. "It's nothing major. I'll go check it out. Elizabeth, I'll call you later."

Elizabeth didn't press for details. "Okay."

She hung up and went to Dean's office.

"Dean, can you ask Daniel if anything big is happening at Stellar Enterprises today?"

Dean stood up. "I was just about to come find you."

He closed the door, his expression serious. "Margaret is threatening to jump. She's on the rooftop right above Michael's office."

Elizabeth felt a wave of exhaustion.

Why did Margaret always have to haunt them? Why couldn't she leave Michael alone? Even in death, she wanted to be near him.

Was she trying to make sure Michael would never forget her? If she didn't succeed this time, would she continue to cling to him?

When would this ever end?

Elizabeth's heart was filled with worry about the future.

She returned to her office and opened the local news live stream.

The Stellar Enterprises building was surrounded by a crowd. People were talking animatedly.

"I heard this woman used to work at Stellar Enterprises. She got disfigured later. Maybe she's not right in the head?"

"I heard she fell in love with the CEO and couldn't have him, so she wants to kill herself."

"Doesn't the CEO have a girlfriend? Is this woman trying to be the other woman?"

"Whatever the case, she doesn't work there anymore. Coming here to kill herself is just causing trouble for Stellar Enterprises. No wonder the CEO doesn't like her!"

The crowd continued to chatter, heads tilted up.

Rescue workers had already set up an air cushion.

The police had arrived.

Firefighters were on the rooftop, ready to intervene.

Michael and the security team reached the rooftop.

Margaret stood before him in a red dress.

The wind on the rooftop was strong, whipping her hair and dress around.

She wasn't wearing a mask, revealing the scars from the fire. She stared at Michael. "Michael, you're here."

Michael looked at her coldly. "Margaret, what game are you playing now? Trying to force me to agree to your demands by threatening to jump?"

Margaret's lips curled into a bitter smile. "Michael, I just came to the place where my dreams began, to end it all. I was young and in love when I first met you. I followed you without hesitation for years. But you never saw my love and dedication. Or maybe you did, but you just didn't care."

Michael's voice was icy. "Who says that just because you love me, I have to love you back? Just like others might love you, but you don't necessarily love them."

Margaret laughed softly, tilting her head back. "You mean Matthew? I used him. I always did."

Michael's eyes narrowed. "Where is Matthew? What did you do to him? He wouldn't let you come here alone."

Margaret looked down at the crowd below. "Matthew? He's still unconscious. I knocked him out in my office. He was following your orders, trying to make me disappear quietly. But I won't let you have your way. I was meant to live a grand, free life. Why should I die quietly just because you say so?"

Michael took a step forward. "Margaret, what are you planning?"

Margaret shook her head. "Michael, you never tried to understand me. I loved you, admired you, wanted to be the best Margaret for you. But look at me now."

She raised her hand, pointing to her face. "With this face, even I can't stand myself. How could you? I don't hate you. I just..."

Her high heels were already on the edge of the rooftop, about to step over the railing.

Michael took another step forward.
