Chapter 216 You Two Keep Each Other Warm

After breakfast, Elizabeth's phone rang again.

She glanced at the screen; it was an unknown number, and an international call at that.

Elizabeth answered.

"Elizabeth. It's Jennifer." As soon as Elizabeth heard the voice, she wanted to hang up.

Hearing Jennifer's voice first thing in the morning was truly unfortunate.

Elizabeth said, "I'm busy. If it's not important, I'm hanging up."

She hung up and tossed the phone onto the dining table.

Dean asked, "Who got under your skin?"

Elizabeth replied, "Jennifer."

Dean said, "Why would she call you? It's gotta be about her brother!"

Elizabeth nodded. "Once Kieran got caught, she couldn't sit still."

Jennifer called again, and Elizabeth answered.

Jennifer shouted, "Elizabeth!"

Elizabeth said, "What do you want?"

Jennifer said, "Kieran was fine abroad. The moment he came back, trouble found him. Elizabeth, this has to be your doing, right? You are such heartless!"

Elizabeth said, "Not as heartless as you! You drove your husband to his death! Don't you feel any guilt?"

Jennifer was furious. "Elizabeth, Kieran better be okay. If anything happens to him, you'll pay!"

Elizabeth said, "My dear stepmother, how do you plan to make me pay? Celestria is a country of law. Are you going to do it yourself or hire someone? If I die, do you think you can stay out of it? Just like four years ago, when you pushed Kieran to embezzle the Jones Group's assets. You were fine, but he took the fall for you. Now he's in jail, facing the law's severe punishment!"

Jennifer couldn't believe how much Elizabeth had changed in four years. She was no longer someone she could easily manipulate.

She said, "Elizabeth! I haven't even dealt with you over Patricia's death yet! Now, with Kieran in jail, just wait. When I get back, I'll settle all these scores with you one by one!"

Elizabeth said, "Jennifer! People get what they deserve. Evil deeds always lead to misfortune! Even if I don't take action, God will. I told you back then, one day, I would send Kieran to jail and take back everything that rightfully belongs to me!"

Jennifer was so furious on the other end that she was grinding her teeth.

She angrily hung up the phone and quickly bought a ticket to return to the country.

Nancy had just finished hanging the clothes on the balcony and came back to hear Elizabeth on the phone.

"Was that Jennifer?" she asked Elizabeth.

Elizabeth replied, "Yes, Kieran got caught. She's furious and said she would make me pay."

Nancy felt a surge of unease.

She reminded Elizabeth, "Elizabeth, you must be careful recently, and keep an eye on Pearl and Nolan. Make sure they come straight home after school and don't linger outside."

Elizabeth patted Nancy's hand.

"Okay. Mom, I know. I'll go see what they're playing. I'll take them out for a walk later. The weather hasn't been good lately, and they must be bored in the room."

Nancy was still worried. "Don't go out. Just play in the yard with the snow."

Elizabeth didn't want her to worry, so she agreed. "Okay. Mom."

On Monday, the news of Kieran's capture made the headlines.

Dean went to the CEO's office to find Elizabeth.

He said, "Elizabeth. Did you see the news? It seems this time it's irreversible."

Elizabeth said, "Yes. I'm completely relieved."

Dean said, "How about we officially celebrate?"

Elizabeth agreed. "Alright. Bring Sarah along."

Dean touched his hair, looking a bit shy. "Can I call Daniel?"

Elizabeth gave him a look that made him nervous.

Dean asked, "Elizabeth, why are you looking at me like that?"

"I just want to know how far you two have gone," Elizabeth said.

Dean replied, "Just two assistants of ex-spouses keeping each other warm, that's all."

Elizabeth said, "You two are already keeping each other warm? That's good."

Dean was speechless. "Elizabeth."

Elizabeth said, "Call Daniel. But leave Michael out of this. Don't let him know."

Dean happily went to make the call.

Meanwhile, Jennifer got off the plane and immediately contacted a well-known local lawyer.

The lawyer's advice was that the chances of winning the lawsuit were slim and suggested she negotiate with Elizabeth.

So Jennifer called Elizabeth again and arranged to meet at a café.

Recently, because of Kieran's situation, Jennifer hadn't been eating or sleeping well. She looked haggard, and with her age, she no longer had the charm she once did.

In contrast, Elizabeth looked composed, mature, and charming. She was no longer the timid, easily manipulated girl Jennifer remembered.

Jennifer took a sip of coffee and got straight to the point. "Elizabeth, just say it directly. How much money do you want to let Kieran go?"

Elizabeth crossed her legs, leaned back in her chair, and tapped her fingers on the table casually. "Jennifer, you know very well how much Kieran embezzled from the Jones Group back then, don't you?"

Jennifer looked out the window and replied softly, "One billion dollars."

Elizabeth glared at her. "If he hadn't embezzled that one billion dollars back then, I would have had a completely different life!"

Jennifer seized on her words and quickly said, "Yes. If it weren't for that, you wouldn't be the new CEO of the Jones Group now."

Elizabeth was furious. "Jennifer, can you be reasonable? If he hadn't embezzled the money, would my father have died? Would I have been forced to marry Michael? Would I have had to leave the country?"

Jennifer continued stubbornly, "But your father left all his assets to you! He didn't leave anything for me and Patricia! And I took care of him for so long!"

Elizabeth stood up angrily, pressing her hands on the table, glaring at Jennifer. "But I no longer have a father! Kieran is the murderer! Do you think I will let him go?"

Jennifer remembered her purpose for meeting Elizabeth this time, which was definitely not to anger Elizabeth.

So she quickly started to play the victim. "Elizabeth, no matter what, when you were little, your mother wasn't around, and it was me who took care of you! Remember, you used to call Kieran 'Uncle.' Now, Patricia is gone. Can you bear to see another dear brother taken away from me?"

Elizabeth sat down and replied coldly, "Isn't all this your own doing? If it weren't for your instigation, would he have embezzled the company's funds so easily?"

Jennifer tentatively asked Elizabeth, "If I give you one billion dollars now, can you let Kieran go and not pursue his responsibility?"

Elizabeth looked at her coldly. "Can one billion dollars bring my father back to life?"

Jennifer frowned in thought and looked up. "Then I'll give you two billion dollars. That's all the money I have. I'll give it all to you. Let Kieran go."

Elizabeth raised an eyebrow. "I'll think about it."

Jennifer's face showed a hopeful expression. "Okay. I'll wait for your news."
