Chapter 416 To Be Together
Margaret quickly put on her mask, her eyes showing her disappointment. "See, even you were freaked out when you saw my face. Imagine how others would react."
Matthew tried to keep his emotions in check. "You still haven't told me. Who are you marrying?"
Margaret looked at him. "You don't want to know. You'll just end up yelling at me."
Matthew scoffed, turning his face away. "Margaret, stop wasting time. You called me here today to tell me this news, didn't you? You've already decided to tell me, so why drag it out?"
Margaret lowered her head. "Fine. I'll tell you. It's Michael. I'm marrying Michael."
Matthew thought he must have misheard and stayed silent for a moment.
Margaret leaned back against the sofa, spreading her hands. "Surprised, aren't you? I can actually marry Michael."
Matthew couldn't hold back any longer and stood up abruptly. "Margaret! You're out of your mind! What kind of fantasy are you living in? Michael is still in Valoria, with Elizabeth and her kids! They're a happy family! Stop trying to mess with their happiness!"
Margaret gave a bitter smile. "Matthew, if they were truly happy, if their relationship was unbreakable, why would I say this? Why would I act crazy in front of you? Maybe Michael went to Valoria to escape something. Maybe he wanted to leave Elizabeth with good memories. After all, once he returns, our wedding will be held immediately."
Matthew looked at her, and she didn't seem to be lying, but he was still incredulous. "Margaret, does Michael have something on you? Can't you ask him for something else? Money, company shares, anything? Why do you have to marry him? Do you think he'll love you? Will you be happy? He didn't love you when you were beautiful, let alone now..."
"Now that I'm as hideous as a demon from hell, right? Matthew, who told you that two people getting married must love each other? How many couples in this world are happy until old age? There's no such thing as perfection. Haven't you heard 'where there's a will, there's a way'?"
Matthew shook his head. "That's not it, Margaret. You're too extreme."
Margaret gave a bitter smile. "Matthew, even though you've grown older, why is your heart still as pure as a child's? Michael and I are naturally taking what we need, a union of interests. Do you think I want to stand in front of everyone looking like this? Matthew, there are too many things in this world that we can't control."
Matthew suddenly understood. "Is Samuel threatening you?"
Margaret didn't answer directly. "Matthew, I know I've done many wrong things. I'm unforgivable. I deserve my punishment. But there are many people who do bad things and still live well. I can't stand it. If God won't punish them, then I will."
Matthew looked at Margaret, finding her unfamiliar not just in appearance but in mindset.
"Margaret, are you really going to marry Michael?"
"You still don't believe me? I advise you not to call him to confirm. You'll ruin his good mood. Just consider this his vacation. When it's over, he'll have the wedding preparations waiting for him."
"What about Elizabeth? Does she know?"
Margaret laughed. "That foolish woman is probably still being deceived by Michael. Would he dare tell her? If she knew about the wedding, would she still be having fun? Unless she doesn't care at all."
Matthew frowned. "I'm outta here. Seems like you've got other plans."
The next day, Elizabeth woke up late. She glanced at the time and suddenly sat up.
"Michael, why did you turn off my alarm?"
Michael was quietly watching her sleep.
"I saw you were sleeping soundly. There's nothing urgent today. You can sleep a bit more."
Elizabeth quickly got out of bed, dressed, and hurriedly washed up and did her makeup.
"How do you know there's nothing important today? I have an appointment with the photographer for our family photos. It's hard to book this photographer. Being late wouldn't be good."
Michael seemed lost in thought. "Sorry. I didn't know."
"Alright. Since you didn't know, I forgive you. Go help the kids with breakfast. We'll leave soon."
They arrived at the studio just in time. The photographer was waiting for them.
"Ms. Jones, your family is so photogenic. Each of you could be my models. I bet today's photos will be perfect for my studio's promotional material, of course, with your permission."
Elizabeth smiled. "Let's take the photos first. We'll see how they turn out."
She held Francis, Pearl stood between Michael and Elizabeth, and Nolan stood at the edge, close to Elizabeth.
After the family photo, Elizabeth handed Francis to Susan and pulled Michael to her side. "Let's take a photo of just the two of us."
Michael nodded.
Elizabeth raised her hand, hooking it around his arm, leaning into him with a sweet smile.
While doing her makeup that morning, she had noticed the sudden appearance of a diamond ring on her right hand. She felt both happy and surprised.
With a face full of happiness, she held Michael's hand and asked, "When did you sneak this on me? I didn't even notice."
Michael just smiled and patted her head, not answering.
At that moment, they leaned into each other, capturing their happiness in the photo.
Elizabeth thought, 'Let the past stay in the past.' The love and hate from before could be attributed to their youthful recklessness. In the future, she would love him well.
The photographer asked for their permission to use their photo as promotional material on social media.
Elizabeth was surprised that Michael agreed.
"I thought you wouldn't agree, considering your privacy."
"No worries. Many people in Celestria know about us. It's not a secret. I have nothing to hide."
Actually, Michael thought the photographer was far away in Valoria. The content on her social media might not reach Celestria. He had nothing to worry about.
But his words made Elizabeth even happier. She thought he meant he was ready to be openly together with her, like a normal couple, without worrying about others' opinions.
When introducing him, she could finally say "this is my boyfriend" without any mental burden, instead of "this is my ex-husband."
Was that it?
On the way home, Nolan quietly asked her, "Mom, are you planning to be with Michael?"
