Chapter 64 Traitor
Elizabeth nodded.
Sarah said, "But he's not that old, and he is indeed very handsome."
Elizabeth looked at her, exasperated. "Sarah, is this the time to be concerned about his looks? He deceived me. A pretty face is no excuse for what he did."
Sarah quickly hugged her shoulders and gently patted her. "Yes, Elizabeth, don't get upset. It must be Michael's fault. You have such a good temper and rarely get angry. He must have done something really awful to you!"
Elizabeth gave Sarah a tight hug. "I'm sorry, Sarah. Don't worry about me. Just focus on your relationship. Even though Michael and David tricked me, David seems pretty innocent. As long as you're happy with him, I'm on your side."
Sarah let go and looked at her. "So, Elizabeth, what about you? Do you really have to divorce Michael? Is he really that bad?"
Sarah still couldn't believe that the idol she had always admired was such a terrible person.
Elizabeth looked down, noting wanting her issue to influence Sarah's relationship with David. "Sarah, you should go inside. It's cold out here. I need some time to think."
Sarah gave her a light hug. "Alright, Elizabeth. Take care of yourself."
Elizabeth nodded. "Go on. I'll be fine."
She raised her hand, hailed a cab, and left.
Sarah headed towards the restaurant.
Just then, David and Michael walked out of the restaurant together.
Michael saw Elizabeth getting into the cab and quickly told the driver to follow up.
Sarah was about to stop Michael when David grabbed her wrist.
David looked at her, his voice low, claiming, "Sarah, I never thought you are dating me just to spy on me. You disappointed me!"
Sarah felt a bit embarrassed but kept her cool. "Yeah, I'm a spy. I slept with you for some info. Now that you know, you can dump me. There are plenty of good men out there waiting for me."
David, in disbelief, tightened his grip, looking hurt. "Sarah, do you really not care about us? Were all those things you said about liking me just lies? How can you give up on us so easily? Was everything just an act?"
Sarah looked up at his eyes and confessed, "David, I'm interested in you from the start. I thought you were handsome and a good person, so I decided to be with you. When we slept together, it was because I genuinely liked you. A spy is just a side mission. If you think I'm only with you for that, think whatever you want. I don't care."
After saying this, Sarah gently freed her arm from David's grip.
Seeing her about to go, David quickly grabbed her arm again.
Sarah turned back, annoyed. "David, if you think I'm a spy, why are you still bothering me?"
David raised his chin, looking awkward. "We'll talk about us later, but look at Michael and Elizabeth. They clearly have issues, and isn't it because of what you said? Don't you think you did something wrong? Leaving such a mess behind, isn't that irresponsible?"
Sarah shot back, "But it's clear Elizabeth doesn't like him. She wants to divorce Michael. Why should I help them reconcile?"
David looked disappointed. "Elizabeth doesn't like Michael? Why do you think that? When I used to see Elizabeth at business events, she never wore makeup or dressed up. But did you see her today? Her clothes and shoes are brand new, and she's even wearing light makeup. What does that tell you?"
Sarah, being carelss, didn't pay attention to these details as her eyes widened. "So, what does that mean?"
David rubbed his forehead. "It means Elizabeth cares about Michael! You dummy. If she didn't care, why would she bother dressing up for him? Is the Elizabeth you know a woman who usually cares a lot about her appearance?"
Sarah lowered her head, thought for a moment and then said softly, "Yeah, Elizabeth never dresses up or wears makeup. I've hardly ever seen her in a dress."
David nodded in agreement. "Exactly! Even if she says she wants a divorce, it's probably just out of anger. She must still care about him. Don't ruin her chances by breaking up a couple who still have feelings for each other!"
Sarah looked at him, questioning herself. "Is this really because of me?"
David pulled her into his arms, gently stroking her hair and comforting, "It's not that serious. As long as we fix it in time, there's still a chance."
Sarah nestled into his chest, wrapping her arms around his waist. "But Elizabeth was so angry when she left. What if she ignores Michael? David, no matter what happens, I will unconditionally support Elizabeth. Whether she wants to stay or divorce, I will respect her choice!"
She looked up at David, pointing a finger at him. "And you, David, you're my boyfriend now, and you must unconditionally support my decision, too!"
David fondly took her pointed finger, gently lowering it. "Alright, I'll listen to you. I'll stand by your side."
Sarah finally smiled, satisfied.
David secretly breathed a sigh of relief. He nearly had lost his new girlfriend. Luckily, his quick wits served in time.
Elizabeth went to Nancy's apartment.
Nancy was in the kitchen cooking. Hearing Elizabeth come in, she came out, wiping her hands on her apron.
Nancy asked, "Elizabeth, why are you here at this hour?"
Elizabeth looked at her. "Mom, it's so late, and you haven't eaten yet?"
She then hugged Nancy and said softly, "You don't have to work so hard anymore. I can take care of you."
Nancy smiled. "I'm still young. I can always make money with my own hands. How can I just rely on you? By the way, did you have dinner? I made a lot of food today, enough for two."
Elizabeth let go of Nancy, changed her shoes, and went to the kitchen to help Nancy.
Nancy glanced at her dress. "You bought that dress today, didn't you? I've never seen you wear it before. Don't get your dress dirty in the kitchen. You should go rest. You've never cooked a meal in your life."
Nancy shooed Elizabeth out of the kitchen and got busy cooking. Elizabeth plopped down on the couch and watched TV for a bit. Before long, Nancy had dinner ready.
They chatted while they ate.
Nancy asked, "Elizabeth, you seem quite down just now when you came in. Did you and Michael have another fight?"
