Chapter 191 An Unexpected Kiss
Michael, with his long legs, dragged Eloise along, trying to keep up with Elizabeth and Nolan as they left the school building.
When he overheard what Nolan said to Elizabeth, Michael couldn't help but burst out laughing.
Elizabeth and Nolan both spun around and shot him identical glares.
Michael was caught off guard.
Eloise chimed in, "Michael, when Nolan's mad, he looks just like you when you're angry."
She didn't mean much by it, but Michael took it to heart.
He thought about it and realized she was right.
Could it be that when Elizabeth adopted Nolan, she picked him because he looked like him? Maybe she never really forgot about him.
Thinking this, Michael's lips curled into a smile, and his steps got a little lighter.
Eloise looked at him curiously. "Michael, are you really that happy to make Nolan and Elizabeth mad? You're acting like a kid!"
Eloise, like a little adult, pouted and shook her head.
She thought, 'Look at Michael, so immature. How childish.'
They reached the school gate and headed to their cars.
Michael opened the car door, tossed Eloise's bag inside, and then walked over to Elizabeth. "The restaurant's not far; let's walk. Parking's a nightmare there."
Elizabeth nodded and put Nolan's backpack in her car too.
Michael called Eloise over. Elizabeth took Nolan's hand. The four of them walked to the restaurant together.
It was the early autumn.
The trees lining the road had leaves that were almost yellow. When the autumn wind blew, leaves swirled and fell gracefully.
Eloise kept picking up fallen leaves from the ground as they walked.
Nolan, still a kid, jumped up trying to catch the falling leaves.
The leaves were big but fell quickly, and he couldn't catch a single one, but he was having a blast.
Elizabeth smiled as she watched them, her face glowing in the golden light of the setting sun.
Michael slowed his pace. He walked backward, a short distance in front of Elizabeth, unable to take his eyes off her.
No matter how much he looked at her, he just couldn't get enough.
They walked and played like this, and soon arrived at the restaurant.
But all four of them felt a bit reluctant to end their walk.
Elizabeth ordered two steaks and passed the menu to Michael.
Michael immediately gave it to Eloise.
Elizabeth's warm heart sinked.
The steaks were served quickly.
Michael smiled at Elizabeth. "Let's eat."
Since he had invited her to dinner, Elizabeth felt it would be rude to ignore him.
She said, "Thank you."
She cut Nolan's steak into pieces and pushed the plate to him.
"Thanks, Mom," Nolan said as he took it.
Then, she began to eat.
Michael also cut Eloise's steak into bite-sized pieces and placed the plate in front of her.
Eloise beamed. "Thanks, Michael."
Michael ruffled her hair. "No problem."
Eloise dug into the steak with big bites.
Michael poured her some water and even wiped the sauce from her mouth with a napkin.
Elizabeth ate her food in silence, fuming.
Watching Michael fuss over Eloise made her feel uneasy.
She angrily stabbed her fork into the steak on her plate over and over, then shoved it into her mouth, chewing vigorously to vent her anger.
Suddenly, Elizabeth yelped, dropped her fork, and covered her mouth.
Michael looked up, concerned. "What happened?"
Elizabeth mumbled, "None of your business!"
Nolan asked, worried, "Mom, did you bite your tongue?"
Elizabeth turned her head, still mumbling in pain, tears streaming down her face. "Nolan, I bit the fork. It stabbed my tongue. It hurts."
Michael stood up, walked over to Elizabeth, and tilted her chin up. "Let me see."
Elizabeth turned away, shaking off his hand. "None of your business."
Michael tilted her chin back. "Stop it. Let me see. Open your mouth."
Elizabeth closed her eyes and reluctantly stuck out her tongue.
Her tongue was bleeding.
Michael strode to the service counter. When he returned, he was holding an ice cream cone.
He handed it to her. "Take small bites and hold it in your mouth. It'll help stop the bleeding."
Elizabeth took it and started eating in small bites.
Eloise saw it and stared at the ice cream cone in Elizabeth's hand, swallowing repeatedly.
Elizabeth extended the cone to her. "Want some?"
Eloise smiled and was about to reach for it.
Elizabeth pulled her hand back, stared at Eloise, and deliberately licked the ice cream. "Nope. I already licked it. It has my saliva. Can't give it to you."
Eloise's face fell, filled with disappointment.
Elizabeth felt she had gone too far.
She looked at Michael, embarrassed. "How about..."
Michael looked at Eloise. "Eloise, what flavor do you want?"
Eloise's face lit up with a smile. She was already beautiful, but when she smiled, it was like a breath of fresh spring air.
She looked at Michael. "What flavors can I choose from?"
Michael smiled at her. "Go to the service counter and pick one. Take Nolan with you."
He glanced at Nolan.
Nolan turned his head. "Only kids like that stuff. It's so childish. I don't want any."
Eloise and Elizabeth both looked at him.
Nolan glanced at Elizabeth, who was licking the ice cream.
Eloise walked over, took his hand, and pulled him up from his seat. "Come on, Nolan. Go with me to pick ice cream."
Nolan was dragged away.
Only Michael and Elizabeth remained at the table.
Elizabeth lowered her head, quietly eating her ice cream.
Michael looked at her. "Is it good? You seem to be enjoying it."
Elizabeth said, "What?" Her mouth was still smeared with white ice cream.
Michael's gaze was deep as the sea.
Suddenly, he tilted her chin up again, forcing her to face him.
Then, he pressed his lips to hers.
