Chapter 160 He Wanted to Embrace Her Recklessly
"Nothing," Michael said coldly as he strode out of the classroom.
As he pushed open the classroom door, Michael suddenly spotted Eloise standing there.
He was caught off guard.
Turning to Eloise's caretaker, he asked, "Clio, what's Eloise doing here?"
Clio Webb sighed, "Mr. Thomas, Eloise said she hasn't seen Nolan in ages and insisted on seeing him today. So, here we are."
Michael frowned, puzzled.
What was going on between Eloise and Nolan?
Why was Eloise, who usually shied away from strangers, so eager to see Nolan?
At Aurora Bay Airport, Elizabeth scanned the crowd, looking for Louis.
Dressed in light-colored casual clothes, Louis strolled towards her, dragging his suitcase and flashing a charming smile.
He stopped in front of her, his grin widening. "Elizabeth, it's been a while."
Elizabeth smiled back. "Louis, it's been a while."
She was also in a light-colored dress, paired with delicate high heels.
Her smile was radiant, her spirits high.
Amidst the bustling airport crowd, she looked stunning and confident.
She was no longer the cautious young girl she had been when she first arrived in Valoria four years ago.
Louis couldn't take his eyes off her.
Though she was still Elizabeth, she seemed different.
She no longer appeared to be the Elizabeth who often needed his help.
They walked out side by side.
She had her handbag and scarf draped over her arm.
As they left the airport, they chatted away.
To onlookers, Elizabeth and Louis, with her youthful beauty and his mature steadiness, seemed like a perfect match.
Whenever Elizabeth spoke, Louis couldn't help but gaze at her.
He probably didn't realize how much tenderness was in his eyes.
In the car, Elizabeth helped Louis put his suitcase in the trunk.
Inside the care, she asked, "Louis, how long are you staying this time?"
Louis, sitting in the passenger seat, turned to her with a smile. "I've resigned. Elizabeth, I'm here for the long haul now."
Elizabeth's smile was genuine. "That's awesome, Louis. We'll get to see each other more often."
Louis nodded. "Yeah, we will." He looked ahead, "Over there, I was Ms. Johnson's personal assistant. Since she passed away, my work there is done. Staying there doesn't make sense anymore. Plus, there are things and people I care about here. So, I decided to come back."
He glanced at Elizabeth as he said this.
Elizabeth said, "Louis, I really need to thank you. Thanks for arranging the special operating room at Harmony Health Hospital. Once you're settled, I'd love to treat you to a meal."
Louis smiled slightly. "Sure."
Elizabeth relaxed and smiled. "It's settled then!"
Louis's expression suddenly darkened as he seemed to remember something. "Elizabeth, Calla called me."
Elizabeth was puzzled. "Why did she call you? The professor has already passed away. She can't be looking to join the research lab. Could it be about Eloise's surgery?"
Louis nodded, "Yeah, you're right. Calla can't handle Eloise's surgery on her own. She needs help."
Elizabeth asked, "Who does she want to find?"
"She asked me to recommend some colleagues from the research lab. She's offering a high salary, but no one's willing to take the job, no matter how much she pays. Unless the professor were still alive. Or," he looked at Elizabeth, "you step in."
His expression turned serious, "Elizabeth, don't worry. Calla's digging her own grave. She doesn't have the skills but claimed she could cure Eloise. She even took credit for your work. She's shameless. Doesn't she fear the day Michael finds out the truth? Can she handle the consequences?"
Elizabeth replied calmly, "That's between them. It's just unfortunate for Eloise. I'm worried she might get hurt under Calla's care. She's already sick; I hope it doesn't get worse."
Louis looked at her tenderly, "Elizabeth, why are you still so kind? Why be so merciful to someone like her?"
Elizabeth replied, "Louis, a doctor's heart is compassionate. Sometimes, you have to step out of your own circle and perspective. Don't be confined by personal emotions. As a doctor, how can I not save lives within my ability? If I didn't, why did I study medicine? Ms. Johnson is watching over me from above; she wouldn't be happy if I didn't."
Louis said, "I get it. You're always soft-hearted, unable to see others suffer. But, Elizabeth, promise me you won't let yourself be sad again."
He still remembered when Elizabeth first arrived in Valoria four years ago.
She was just a twenty-year-old girl, pregnant, yet tirelessly working in the lab.
It seemed like she was desperately trying to forget something.
Once, after the lab lights were turned off, he remembered he had left his coat behind and went back to get it.
The door to the third-floor lab was ajar, and he heard suppressed sobs from inside.
The sound was low, as if afraid of being heard.
Yet it made anyone who heard it feel her sadness, helplessness, and pain.
Louis stood outside the door, his hand on the doorknob, unsure whether to go in.
He had only ever seen her strong side.
He didn't know that in unseen corners, she cried so sorrowfully.
She probably didn't dare cry at home, fearing to worry Nancy.
During the day in the lab, she didn't want to show her vulnerability.
A sudden wave of heartache rose in Louis's usually calm heart.
He had an impulse to rush in, stay with her, give her a hug, or let her lean on his shoulder.
Whatever the problem, he wanted to help her solve it.
A girl as good as her should be smiling brightly and living freely.
But in the end, he didn't push open that door. He turned around quietly and walked down the stairs softly.
After leaving, he went to the small supermarket downstairs from the lab and bought a hot drink.
Then, he walked back up with heavy steps.
As he walked, he pretended to be on the phone, speaking loudly.
"You guys go ahead and eat. I'm going back to the lab. I left my coat there. Don't wait for me."
