Chapter 21 The Woman He Likes Is Not You

To the rest customers in the restaurant, Elizabeth and Margaret looked like just two regular friends, chatting over a meal.

But no one had a clue that they were actually love rivals.

Elizabeth took a bite and kept munching, "If you wanna be Michael's bride, you gotta step up your game! Why do I feel like you're not even trying?"

Margaret sipped her water, "If it were that easy, I wouldn't have stuck around Michael for years without getting anywhere. Plus, I heard Mary likes you and gives you the thumbs up. Without Mary's approval, Michael won't initiate a divorce!"

Margaret finished and rubbed her nose in frustration.

Elizabeth put down her fork, grabbed her glass, and asked, "You've been by Michael's side for ages, always so loyal. He must know how you feel. Why hasn't he popped the question? Mind you, when Mary was hunting for a wife for him, why didn't you step up?"

Margaret sighed, "Don't even start. I was traveling abroad, and no one told me. Who knew Mary would act so fast? By the time I got back, you two were already hitched."

Elizabeth raised an eyebrow, "Seriously?"

Margaret looked a bit down, "Elizabeth, you can't even imagine how much I love Michael. Just 'cause he doesn't like kids, I went and had surgery to remove my uterus. Just to show him how serious I am. How many women would do that? I could never love another man. He's the only one for me and always will be."

Elizabeth was floored.

She couldn't wrap her head around Margaret's actions.

No matter how much she loved a guy, she wouldn't lose herself like that.

But Margaret was proud of it.

She even boasted to Elizabeth, "I've never regretted it. As long as it's for Michael, I'd do anything. Even if it means never having kids."

Elizabeth was shocked, "How can you do that to yourself? Even if you're willing to do anything for him, you can't harm your own body. What if Michael doesn't want you? Have you thought about that? What you did is just crazy."

Margaret didn't get the reaction she wanted and got impatient, "That's not true. Michael is super cautious with women. Haven't you noticed? He keeps his distance from all of them, but not me. He never pushes me away. When I go to his place, he doesn't kick me out. At work, he always has my back. Doesn't that show I'm special to him?"

Elizabeth felt like she was dealing with a total nutcase today. She never thought Margaret could go this bonkers over Michael. Putting herself so low, would she even be happy if she married him? Would Michael always cherish her? Had she even thought about these things?

Elizabeth couldn't hold it in anymore and blurted out, "Margaret, stop hurting yourself. Stop being so dumb. The woman he likes isn't you!"

She instantly regretted it.

Why did she care? Why was she getting involved?

What if Margaret snitched to Michael? Could Elizabeth dodge his wrath?

Margaret laughed like a maniac.

She didn't buy it, "I don't believe you! No way Michael likes you!"

Elizabeth looked at her, confused, "I never said it was me. Why would you think that?"

Margaret was thrown off. "Then who does he like? I've been by his side for ten years, and he's never dated anyone or shown interest in anyone."

Elizabeth was stunned. She never thought it would be like this.

So, whose photos were on Michael's computer?

Margaret's curiosity was totally piqued, "Elizabeth, how do you know he doesn't like me? Who does he like? Have you seen her? Is she prettier than me?"

Elizabeth suddenly regretted her outburst. What if she misunderstood Michael? What if the woman in the photos wasn't someone he liked but an enemy?

Plus, when Michael found out she used his computer, he punished her in anger. From that, it seemed the woman might not be someone he liked.

But that woman was definitely a taboo.

Margaret probably didn't know about her, either.

This was Michael's secret.

No wonder he was so furious that day.

Elizabeth was kicking herself. She shouldn't have told Margaret anything.

Elizabeth quickly tried to backtrack, "Margaret, forget it. I think I must've been mistaken. That person probably isn't someone Michael likes."

Thinking it over, she decided to stay out of it. Her life was more important.

Margaret had known Michael for over ten years. She probably told him everything.

If Michael found out, Elizabeth would be in deep trouble.

For her and her kids' sake, she decided to stay out of Michael's business.

As for Margaret, whether she was a friend or foe, Elizabeth hadn't figured it out yet. She couldn't say too much.

Elizabeth felt she was still too impulsive in dealing with people.

She deliberately changed the subject, "Michael doesn't like kids? Not even his own?"

Margaret picked up her glass, took a sip, and shrugged, "Honestly, I don't know. You've got me there. But a long time ago, he said he didn't want kids. Maybe he thinks they're a hassle? Who knows? Since Michael doesn't like them, I won't have kids."
