Chapter 131 Where Are Your Two Children?
"No need. I can drive just fine. After I drop the kids off at school today, I'm gonna buy a car. It'll make picking them up and grocery shopping way easier," Nancy said with a confident smile.
Elizabeth nodded. "Alright, we'll talk about this later. I'm heading out. Bye, Mom."
She drove to the Jones Group, her mind already buzzing with the day's agenda. As soon as she arrived, she gathered the company's executives for a meeting to discuss the company's future plans and the current status of their main product launch.
Most of the employees were long-time staff from the Jones Group, with some new hires mixed in.
Everyone was super motivated, especially since Elizabeth was paying them double their previous salaries. They all wanted to repay her, so everyone was working really hard.
Elizabeth took the executives on a tour of the various departments and was very pleased with everyone's performance.
During the lunch break, Elizabeth invited the department heads for coffee at a nearby café. She was deep in conversation with the manager of the R&D department when the manager suddenly looked behind her.
Elizabeth turned around in confusion and saw a familiar face before her. A deep, pleasant male voice sounded in her ear, "Elizabeth."
What a coincidence to run into him here, she thought. Elizabeth greeted him politely, "Mr. Thomas? I didn't expect to see you here."
Michael glanced at the people around her and then whispered in her ear, "Can we talk privately?"
Elizabeth remained unmoved. "I'm discussing work matters with my colleagues. Whatever you have to say, you can say it here."
Michael hesitated for a moment. Looking at her, he slowly said, "It's about the children..."
Elizabeth quickly stood up. "Let's talk privately then."
Michael followed her, a barely noticeable smile playing at the corners of his mouth.
The executives behind Elizabeth huddled together, whispering. "Isn't that Michael Thomas, the CEO of Stellar Enterprises? What does he mean by 'the children'?"
"Don't you know? Four years ago, Ms. Jones already had some private dealings with Michael."
"Michael mentioned children just now. What children? Do they have kids?"
"Right, right, we don't know their situation yet. Let's talk about our new product launch instead."
In a booth tucked away in the corner of the café, Elizabeth gently stirred the foam in her coffee with a spoon.
Michael held his coffee cup, staring unblinkingly at Elizabeth across from him.
He hadn't had a chance to look at her closely in the restaurant that day.
Now, he could finally sit here and look at her up close.
She was still so beautiful. Compared to four years ago, she shed her youthful naivety and became more mature, elegant, and charming. Like a ripe peach ready to be picked, she exuded a captivating allure that drew all eyes to her.
Elizabeth looked up, displeased. "Mr. Thomas, what do you want to talk about? I'm right here; you can say it now."
"How long has it been, Elizabeth, and you're already so distant with me? Calling me Mr. Thomas?" Michael's expression was unreadable.
Elizabeth sneered. "What else should I call you? Michael? Mr. Cheater?"
Putting down her spoon, she crossed her arms, leaned back in the booth, and gazed out the window with obvious impatience. "Suit yourself, pick one."
Michael was clearly infuriated by her attitude.
For the past four years, he had pretended to be indifferent, a mask he wore so well that it became a part of him. But in the quiet of his nights, he had been thinking about her constantly. But he was afraid of disturbing her, of breaking into the life she had built for herself. So he didn't dare to send anyone to inquire about her and was afraid she would notice.
Since she had chosen to leave resolutely back then, she must have had her reasons.
So he let her go, allowing her to live quietly on her own.
Now that she was back, not only had she divorced him completely, but she was also so distant when they spoke.
Michael got straight to the point. "Elizabeth, where are your two children?"
This question hit Elizabeth like a bolt of lightning.
Her eyes widened, and she sat up straight, looking at him.
Her mind was racing with questions.
Nolan and Pearl had never appeared in front of him. How did Michael know? Did he hire a private investigator? Did he investigate her? Did he have her followed? When did he find out about the children?
Michael couldn't possibly know; otherwise, he would have confronted her long ago. But maybe he didn't know the truth at all, and this was just a trick to lure her into revealing it?
Elizabeth leaned back, pretending to be nonchalant. "What children? Whose children?"
Michael kept his eyes fixed on her face, looking for any sign of a lie.
He stared into her eyes and said, "Your two children. A boy and a girl. Where are they now?"
Hearing that he could accurately state the children's gender, Elizabeth's heart skipped a beat.
She could feel cold sweat running down her back.
But she forced herself to stay calm. "Mr. Thomas, is there anything else you'd like to add? I don't know what you're talking about. As for children, I did have children once, but where they went, Mr. Thomas, you should know better than anyone. Now you're bringing up children, after four years, Michael, are you trying to provoke me with this topic?"
At this point, Elizabeth's eyes turned red, as if she was about to cry.
Seeing her like this, Michael panicked. He picked up a napkin from the table and handed it to her. "I'm sorry," he said, frowning and a bit flustered, "Yesterday, I was watching surveillance footage from Harmony Health Hospital. I saw you there with two children, holding one in each hand, so I wanted to ask if those two children are yours. If they are," he lowered his head, paused for a few seconds, and couldn't help but ask, "If they are, I want to know who their father is."
After saying this, Michael stared intently at Elizabeth.
Elizabeth looked back at him without fear. "Michael, what do you want to say?"
Michael went silent; maybe he had mistaken someone else for her. After all, the surveillance footage wasn't very clear, and someone could look similar.
He stood up. "I'm sorry, it's nothing. I thought you had children."
Elizabeth suddenly felt indignant and asked him, "Michael, if I had two children, what would you do?" There was a hint of anticipation in Elizabeth's eyes.
Michael turned back, looking at her with a complex expression.
