Chapter 576 Loss of Power
"Hey, Sarah," Susan whispered, "I hope you don't mind, but I ran into your mom at the grocery store yesterday. She was asking when you and David are planning to have kids."
Sarah's face turned bright red. "Why is my mom talking about this everywhere?"
Elizabeth chuckled knowingly and handed Sarah an almond cookie. "That's just how parents are. I wish I could still hear my mom nagging me about stuff like that."
Sarah gave her an apologetic look. "I'm sorry, Elizabeth. I didn't mean to bring it up."
Elizabeth patted her on the shoulder. "No need to apologize. You didn't bring it up, I did."
"I know a great gynecologist," Susan said as she set the table. "She helped my niece, who couldn't get pregnant for three years. After two months with her, she was expecting twins."
Sarah nearly choked on her soup. "Twins? That's amazing!"
"Isn't it?" Susan laughed. "She uses natural remedies with no side effects. If you're interested, I can get you an appointment."
Elizabeth looked thoughtfully at her friend. "You've been saying you haven't been sleeping well lately. Maybe you could get some help with that too."
"That would be great!" Sarah's eyes lit up. "But..." She lowered her voice. "Actually, David has been secretly taking men's vitamins to improve his sperm quality."
Pearl suddenly chimed in, "Sarah, are you going to have a baby?"
"Pearl!" Elizabeth cleared her throat. "This is grown-up talk."
"But one of my classmates' moms just had a baby brother," Pearl said, tilting her head. "She said her mom had to drink some yucky medicine every day before he was born. It was really hard."
Sarah laughed and pinched Pearl's cheek. "That's why I'm looking for the best doctor, so it won't be too hard."
"Will the baby look like David?" Pearl asked innocently. "It would be better if he looked like Mr. McGinnis."
Elizabeth nearly choked on her coffee. "Pearl! You can't say things like that!"
Sarah burst out laughing. "Don't let David hear that, or he'll be heartbroken."
Susan walked over with her phone. "Sarah, I got you an appointment for Friday at 3 PM. That doctor is really in demand."
"Thank you, Susan!" Sarah said sincerely. "If I do get pregnant, I'll owe you big time."
"Don't mention it," Susan waved her hand. "You young folks have a lot of pressure. I'm just happy to help."
Outside, the last rays of the sunset gently bathed the earth.
After dinner, Sarah and Elizabeth sipped coffee on the terrace. As night fell, the city lights sparkled in the distance.
"I'm a little scared," Sarah suddenly said. "If we do have a baby, our lives will change completely."
Elizabeth gently held her hand. "Every mother feels that fear. But when you hold your baby, all your worries will turn into courage."
"You're right," Sarah took a deep breath. "And David will be a great dad, even if he can be a bit clueless sometimes."
"He's more reliable than you think," Elizabeth smiled. "Remember when Pearl had a fever, and he drove all night to bring her medicine?"
Sarah nodded, her eyes softening.
At Silverline Hospital in Majestic City.
Gerald had passed the critical stage and was now in a VIP intensive care room. Cordelia and Zander visited him daily.
Michael sometimes came by too. But most of the time, he was managing Gerald's Murphy Group and the vast family business.
The heads of the various Murphy Group enterprises had noticed Michael's rising importance in the family. Whenever he visited, they treated him with utmost respect.
Victor was dead, and Cordelia was a woman. The future of the Murphy family clearly belonged to Michael.
That's what they all thought.
In the VIP room, Gerald leaned back on the bed, his eyes sharp as an eagle's. His voice was hoarse. "Have you found out everything?"
Zander, standing respectfully beside him, replied, "Yes, Gerald. The woman acted alone, no accomplices."
Gerald sneered. "Are you sure?"
Zander lowered his head, even more respectful. "Absolutely sure. She was a nurse at this hospital, the fiancée of the deceased Glenn."
Zander glanced at Michael, who stood by the bed.
"Glenn? The surgeon who operated on Elizabeth? Her classmate?" Gerald asked, his eyes on Michael.
"Yes," Zander confirmed.
Gerald, though questioning Zander, kept his gaze on Michael. "Is everything taken care of?"
"Just as you ordered, we burned her hideout to the ground. Officially, it was an accident with a candle," Zander said, helping Gerald sit up.
"She escaped because someone at the party helped her. Someone worked with her to get her out and hide her."
Gerald coughed into his fist. "So, Juan isn't on my side anymore, huh?"
He turned to Zander. "That hideout was one of Juan's properties, right?"
Zander nodded. "Yes, it belonged to Mr. Stewart."
Michael stood by, his face expressionless, his coffee cup warm in his hand. He knew his situation here was about to get even more difficult.
But that was okay. He would find a way out.
He had faced worse situations before.
"Michael," Gerald suddenly addressed him, "starting tomorrow, you don't need to go to the office."
Michael's eyes narrowed. "What do you mean?"
"Cordelia is pregnant and needs someone with her," Gerald said with a fake smile. "Stay home and take care of her. Zander will handle the company."
Cordelia looked at Gerald uneasily. "Dad, Michael..."
"It's settled. I need to rest. Zander will stay with me. Cordelia, you and Michael go home," Gerald said firmly, closing his eyes and leaning back.
Cordelia gave Michael a helpless look and gently tugged his sleeve. "Michael, let's go home and let Dad rest."
Michael nodded, his face blank. "Alright. Let's go."
He helped Cordelia out of the room.
In the hallway, his face darkened.
He had promised Elizabeth he would protect Rowan. But he had failed. Rowan was burned to death.
If Elizabeth knew, how heartbroken would she be?
Would Elizabeth blame him?
Michael's heart ached with bitterness.
