Chapter 568 I Am Back
Cordelia was too scared to touch him again.
"Michael, what happened? Why'd you collapse like that? You scared me!"
Michael slowly lifted his eyes and looked at Zander.
Zander met his gaze but quickly turned his head, clearing his throat.
Cordelia caught on immediately and glared at Zander. "Zander, it was you, wasn't it? Why'd you hurt Michael? He's my husband! Hurting him is like hurting me!"
Zander's eyes filled with pain, his voice rough. "Cordelia, you're yelling at me for some outsider?"
Cordelia shot back, "Michael's my husband! He's the closest person to me! How could he be an outsider?"
Just as Zander was about to respond, doctors and nurses rushed in.
Cordelia quickly said, "Doctor, please check my husband. He just fell and hit his head."
A nurse brought in a stretcher. The doctors lifted Michael onto it and took him for an MRI.
The stretcher wheels echoed down the hallway. Michael kept his eyes tightly shut, memories flashing through his mind like a montage.
As he lay in the MRI scanner, he softly whispered a name to the ceiling.
"Elizabeth. I'm back."
At the airport in Celestria.
Elizabeth and Louis stepped off the plane with Quinn and Eloise.
Dean and Daniel were there to greet them.
As soon as Dean saw Elizabeth, he rushed to hug her warmly. "Elizabeth, you have no idea how much I've missed you!"
Elizabeth smiled. "I do. Just as much as I've missed you."
Dean's smile turned into a playful pout. "I missed you more. If you hadn't come back, I would've gone to find you."
He looked at Quinn and Eloise, amazed. "You two really are twins! You look exactly alike! Eloise, you should see Francis, the boy you saved. He's very healthy now, just a bit too mischievous."
Eloise smiled. "I can imagine. He must be adorable."
Elizabeth was puzzled. "Mischievous? Francis?"
Dean looked at her. "How long has it been since you saw Francis? When you left, he couldn't even talk. Now, he can be quite a handful!"
Elizabeth felt an overwhelming urge to fly straight to Whispering Pines Estates. She couldn't wait to see Pearl and Francis.
At the Central Hospital in Majestic City.
After the MRI, Michael was brought back to his room.
Cordelia, worried about him, arranged for him to stay in the same room as Gerald for easier care.
She half-sat by his bedside, concerned. "Michael, how are you feeling? Does your head still hurt?"
Michael reassured her. "Cordelia, I'm fine. I just need some rest. No need to stay in the hospital."
Cordelia gave Zander a slightly reproachful look.
Zander quickly turned his head away.
Cordelia spoke gently. "Michael, let's wait for the MRI results first."
Michael nodded. "Alright. I'll listen to you."
The doctor came in with the MRI report.
"Mr. Thomas, your MRI results are normal. It seems you have a concussion from hitting your head."
Cordelia asked anxiously, "A concussion? Is it serious? What should we do?"
The doctor adjusted his glasses. "Plenty of rest, keep calm, avoid stress, and limit activity."
He looked around the room. "It's best if the patient has a private room. A noisy environment isn't good for recovery."
Cordelia apologized. "I'm sorry, Michael. I thought..."
Michael sat up slowly, stopping her. "Cordelia, it's not your fault. You were just looking out for me."
He got out of bed and put on his shoes. "I think I'll go home."
The doctor quickly agreed. "Home rest is good. Make sure it's a quiet environment."
Cordelia stood up. "Michael, I'll have a bodyguard take you home. Rest well. Don't worry about Dad."
Michael nodded. "Okay."
Zander glanced at the ceiling.
Cordelia arranged for a bodyguard to escort Michael home.
In the room, only Cordelia, Zander, and the resting Gerald remained.
Bodyguards stood outside the door.
Cordelia spoke softly. "Zander, you did well with what I asked you to do."
Zander straightened up, his face glowing with pride. "Cordelia, I'll always do my best for you."
Cordelia frowned. "Does Dad know about this? Why wasn't he surprised by Glenn's death?"
"Gerald didn't know you wanted Glenn dead. He heard somewhere that Glenn was Elizabeth's friend and her surgeon. After Victor's death, he was devastated and wanted revenge. Because of your relationship with Michael, he couldn't kill Michael's son, so he targeted someone close to Elizabeth. Glenn just happened to be there, and Gerald didn't like him, so he ordered me to kill him."
Cordelia pressed her lips together. "I see. Dad wanted him dead too."
"Yes. Even though your reasons for wanting Glenn dead were different, your goals were the same."
Cordelia looked at Zander. "Zander, don't ever mention this to anyone. Especially not Michael."
Zander stood at attention, serious. "I understand!"
Outside, Michael, feeling dizzy from walking too fast, leaned against the wall to steady himself and overheard Cordelia and Zander's conversation.
He knew Gerald's reason for killing Glenn was personal vendetta. But Cordelia?
She had no grudge against Glenn, barely knew him. Why did she want him dead?
Was it because of Elizabeth?
Cordelia's hatred for Elizabeth had reached this level?
Yet, she never showed any of this in front of him. She was a master of disguise.
Michael couldn't make sense of it. He needed to think more, but his headache was too severe.
He had to let it go for now, taking the bodyguard's hand and slowly walking out of the hospital.
The driver took Michael back to the mansion.
He went to his guest room, closed the door, and lay on the bed, calling Juan.
Juan answered quickly, as if he'd been waiting for the call. "Michael, are you calling to ask about the woman you left in my care?"
Michael frowned, trying to ignore Juan's inappropriate wording.
"What are you talking about? She's a person, not an object!"
Juan snorted. "Just answer me, am I right?"
"Fine. How is she?"
"I've hidden her in my villa on the outskirts. As long as she survives until Gerald's death, she'll be safe."
Juan's tone shifted. "But Michael, aren't you a bit too concerned about this woman?"
