Chapter 516 Overwhelmed by Favor
Sherry's face was pale as a ghost. She bit her lip hard, trying to keep her emotions in check. Her eyes were wide, fighting back tears.
Sherry gripped the handle of her suitcase tightly.
She looked at Matthew, trying to steady herself, and said in a flat tone, "Matthew, don't worry. I never planned on marrying you. My past job might not have been glamorous, but I consider myself clean. I've never been with another man. Unlike you, who spends every night with different women and wakes up not knowing who's beside you. Compared to you, I feel quite clean."
Sherry nodded slightly to Janna. "Mrs. Anderson, thank you and Mr. Anderson for your hospitality today. I really appreciate it."
With that, she turned around, gently pushed her suitcase, pulled up the handle, and left without looking back.
The check Elijah had given Sherry still lay on the dining table, untouched.
In the room, the Anderson family exchanged glances, speechless.
Janna broke the silence first. She sat on the couch, glaring at Matthew.
"I think Sherry is great—beautiful and polite, more than good enough for you! You've been obsessed with that awful woman Margaret for years, and she tried to drag you down with her until the end! Look at the life you've been living these past few years! Can't you find a good girl, date seriously, and get married? You're not young anymore, yet you spend every night partying. Aren't you afraid no one will love you in the future?"
Matthew kicked off his shoes angrily and sat on the couch, turning his head away without saying a word.
Elijah suddenly spoke up. "Matthew, did you say Sherry was trying to force you into marriage?"
Matthew seemed to explode at the question. "Isn't that what happened? You and Mom came here to force me to marry her, didn't you? If she hadn't lied to you, you wouldn't have thought of making me marry her!"
Elijah frowned slightly and said in a deep voice, "I don't think Sherry ever said the baby she's carrying is yours. That seems to be our assumption."
He looked at Janna, who thought for a moment and nodded. "Yes. Sherry never said the baby was Matthew's. She also clearly stated she didn't want to marry Matthew."
Janna pushed Matthew. "And you! As soon as you walked in, you started yelling at Sherry. She's pregnant! No matter whose baby it is, your attitude towards a pregnant woman is wrong! You should apologize to her."
Sherry walked down the street, pulling her suitcase. It wasn't the first time Matthew had kicked her out, but this time, for some reason, she felt a pang of sadness.
She called Elizabeth. "Elizabeth, I'm sorry. I know I shouldn't be bothering you right now. You must be very busy."
Elizabeth's voice was a bit noisy on the other end. "It's okay, Sherry. If you need something, just tell me."
Sherry stopped by the roadside. "Matthew kicked me out again."
"What happened?"
"He said I was trying to force him into marriage. I can't stay in the same space with him anymore. I hate him more than ever. I even almost hate the baby I'm carrying, but I know I can't blame the innocent."
"Sherry, I'll text you my address. Take a cab to Whispering Pines Estates. I'll call Susan to expect you. We just landed. Dean and the kids will go home first. I'll be back a bit later."
"Elizabeth, are you going to see Michael?"
"Yeah. I need to see him, no matter what."
"Okay."
After ending the call, Sherry took a cab straight to Whispering Pines Estates.
Susan greeted her at the door.
"Ms. Reed?"
"Yes. Are you Susan?"
"Yes, I am. Please come in. Elizabeth told me you were coming. I've prepared a room for you. It might be a bit simple, but I hope you don't mind."
Sherry was relieved. "Thank you, Susan! I'm just here to stay for a while. As long as I have a place to rest, I won't mind at all."
Susan led her to the guest room. Sherry placed her suitcase inside.
The room was small and simply furnished, but clean and cozy, giving off a warm feeling.
Sherry took off her shoes and lay comfortably on the soft bed, sighing with satisfaction. "Finally, I can get a good night's sleep."
When she woke up and left the room, Susan was already waiting at the dining table.
"Ms. Reed, although it's still early, I was worried you might be hungry when you woke up, so I prepared some simple food for you. Please have a bite. Pearl and Nolan will be back soon. The chef is already preparing dinner. At six o'clock, you can join them for dinner."
Sherry sat at the table, eating slowly. She looked around Elizabeth's cozy little villa, feeling warmth everywhere.
"Thank you so much, Susan."
"Ms. Reed, you're too kind."
"Susan, you can call me 'Sherry.'"
Susan smiled. "Alright, Sherry. Elizabeth told me you're Mr. Thomas' sister. I used to be Mr. Thomas' housekeeper. After Elizabeth had children, I left the Thomas Villa and came here to take care of Elizabeth and the kids."
"Really?"
As they chatted, there was a commotion at the door.
Susan looked out and then turned back to Sherry with a smile. "They're back. Pearl and Nolan are twins, Mr. Thomas' children."
The glass door opened. Dean walked in with Pearl and Nolan.
"Susan, the kids are here. I'll head out now. I need to be with Elizabeth."
Susan welcomed the children into the living room. "Alright, Dean. Go ahead. I'll take care of the kids."
Pearl greeted Sherry. "Is this our new aunt? Hi! You're so pretty!"
Sherry felt a bit shy. "Thank you, Pearl. You're very pretty too."
Nolan walked over. "Hello, Aunt Sherry."
Sherry was pleasantly surprised. She knew Nolan didn't like greeting strangers, so she felt honored. "Hello, Nolan."
Susan went to check on Francis in the nursery.
Nolan and Pearl sat on either side of Sherry.
Nolan asked her, "I heard from Mom that you used to live at Matthew's house?"
Sherry nodded. "Yes. Now, he's kicked me out."
Pearl was indignant. "Matthew is so mean! How can he be so cruel to you? Doesn't he know you're our dad's sister?"
"If I weren't your dad's sister, he wouldn't have taken me in from the start."
Nolan cautiously asked, "Aunt Sherry, did you do something wrong or offend him?"
