Chapter 38 Fell Asleep Leaning on Him

Tonight, after all the craziness, she must've been scared outta her mind.

After all, she was just a girl in her early twenties.

After being all wound up, it made sense she'd crash once she chilled out.

Michael glanced at Elizabeth, snoozing away.

He grabbed his spare jacket from the car and tossed it over her shoulders.

The driver spun the wheel, getting them outta that sketchy area. As he made a sharp turn, Elizabeth's body flopped against Michael.

She still didn't wake up.

When she leaned into him, Michael slid his arm around her to keep her steady.

He gently rested her head on his shoulder.

Using his arm, he kept her from sliding down.

The Rolls-Royce cruised smoothly back to the Sunset Heights.

When the car stopped, Michael gently laid Elizabeth down on the back seat.

A bodyguard opened the door for him. He got out and told Susan, "Wake her up."

Susan rushed to the car and saw Elizabeth was sleeping in the back seat.

She gently patted her shoulder and whispered, "Mrs. Thomas, wake up. Don't sleep in the car. It's cold. Go to your room to sleep."

Elizabeth groggily sat up, looked around, and realized she was back at the Sunset Heights.

She noticed the jacket on her.

It was a black tailored suit with a faint smell of tobacco.

Definitely, it belonged to Michael.

Elizabeth couldn't figure out why Michael was being so nice to her. He even covered her with his jacket.

Susan also noticed the suit jacket on Elizabeth.

She smiled and said, "Mrs. Thomas, Mr. Thomas really cares about you. He's worried you'll get cold, so he always keeps an extra jacket in the car. Look, it's super late, and he personally went out to find you. And about the miscarriage," Susan whispered, "Mr. Thomas did that because he keep you by his side."

Elizabeth just wanted to sleep.

She walked into the living room, kicked off her high heels, and slipped on some comfy slippers. She headed to her room, took off her fancy dress, and hung it up.

She filled the bathtub with warm water and soaked in it, letting out a relaxed sigh.

After her bath, she dried off and buried herself in bed.

The next morning, Elizabeth awoke.

Because she had inhaled some kind of drug the day before, she was a bit foggy.

Elizabeth sat on the bed, thinking about it.

It was clear the kidnappers were definitely connected to Charles.

Only Charles knew there was a safe in Robert's office.

Charles must've opened the safe and found the system materials missing.

So he hired people to kidnap her.

Elizabeth hadn't expected Charles to be so ambitious.

Luckily, she had quick thinking last night and diverted Charles's attention to Anthony.

She thought, 'Anthony, I'm sorry. You'll have to take the fall for this.'

Elizabeth scrambled out of bed, washed up, and went to the dining room.

After breakfast, she took a cab to The Jones Group.

Some people were too blatant and needed to be put in their place.

If she didn't show some strength, others would think she was a pushover.

She went to the CEO's office and called the secretary's office, "Spread the word. There's a high-level meeting in the conference room at 10 AM today."

At 10 AM.

The Jones Group conference room.

Elizabeth saw that everyone had shown up.

She started, "Morning, everyone! I'm Elizabeth. The reason I called this meeting is 'cause I got kidnapped last night."

The room went dead silent.

Elizabeth motioned for everyone to chill.

"Don't freak out, I'm good. Actually, this meeting should've happened ages ago. As you all know, The Jones Group's cash flow is bone dry, and we can't launch new products. The company's in a pretty bad spot. Lots of potential investors don't believe in our new stuff. No one's willing to invest. The only interested investor just wants to buy us out for peanuts."

Elizabeth laid it out clear as day.

Someone piped up, "Didn't our company develop a high-intelligence Super Brain system recently? We could hold a press conference and show it off. Once everyone sees how awesome it is, we'll have investors lining up."

Elizabeth replied, "Richard Davis, the Super Brain system isn't actually finished. It's just a prototype. It's not as hot as everyone thinks."

Charles stood up, "Elizabeth, you say it's just a prototype and not valuable. Do you even get it? That's the blood, sweat, and tears of our whole research team. It's not your dad's private stash. You can't just decide to hand it over to some outsider."

"Who did I give it to?" Elizabeth smirked.

Charles blurted out, "You gave it to..."

She cut him off, "Mr. Wilson, were you the one who was behind my kidnapping last night?"

Charles was stunned into silence.

Elizabeth continued, "Mr. Wilson, if you think you can hog the new system and sell it off cheap, think again. You might as well quit. Anyone who shares your thoughts can leave with him."

Two core members of the research team followed Charles out of the room.

They whispered about Elizabeth in the hallway.

"I've watched Elizabeth grow up. Didn't think she'd be this cutthroat. When Mr. Jones was around, he wasn't this ruthless," one member said.

"Do you think it's true that the system is with Anthony?" another asked.

"Hard to say. She might not know where to stash it. For her, giving it to the Thomas Family isn't a bad move."

"How does Elizabeth know the Thomas Family?"

"Elizabeth and Anthony have been dating for three years. The Thomas Family has kept it on the down-low."

"I heard Anthony's got a sketchy rep."

"The Jones Family father and daughter always seem to pick the wrong people."

"Yeah, Mr. Jones met Jennifer, and it eventually tanked the company he built from scratch."

"We should find a way to meet this Anthony."

Elizabeth wrapped up the high-level meeting at The Jones Group.

After leaving the conference room, she called Sarah, "Sarah, did you call me? What's up? I was in a meeting."

Sarah replied, "Elizabeth, you're always so busy. What have you been up to lately? You seem so mysterious. I have to book an appointment just to grab a meal with you."

"Sorry, Sarah. I've been swamped with my dad's company stuff. Haven't had time to hang out. Lunch is on me today. Where do you wanna go?"

Sarah grinned, "You said it. Let's have dinner together. There's a spot right across from your dad's company."
