Chapter 595 Dust Settles
The driver nodded. "Got it."
The road was pretty empty.
The Cadillac was quickly gaining on the wedding car ahead.
Out of nowhere, a huge truck barreled into the wedding car.
Inside the Cadillac, Zander and the driver stared in shock at the chaos unfolding before them.
The truck was clearly gunning for the wedding car.
It kept ramming into the small car, which was now a crumpled mess.
Zander yelled, flung open the car door, and bolted out.
The driver, snapping out of his daze, quickly followed.
Seeing this, the truck driver sped off.
Zander looked at the wrecked wedding car and screamed at the driver, "Call 911! Now!"
He used all his strength to yank at the rear door, shouting, "Cordelia! Cordelia!"
The driver tried to pull him away. "Mr. Murphy! Ms. Murphy is in bad shape! You need to get away! The car is leaking fuel and could blow up!"
Zander shoved him aside and roared, "Make the call! Didn't you hear me?"
The driver quickly responded, "I already did."
Zander continued to struggle with the car door. Finally, he managed to open it.
The car was severely deformed, and the driver was already dead.
Cordelia was wedged between the front and back seats, covered in blood. Her white wedding dress was stained red.
Zander desperately tried to pull her out. She was motionless.
He turned and shouted at the driver, "Help me!"
Together, they managed to drag Cordelia out.
By the time the ambulance arrived, Zander was barely standing.
He fell to his knees in front of the paramedics. "Please, save her!"
The paramedics didn't have time to help him up. "We need to move quickly!"
Cordelia was placed on a stretcher.
The ambulance sped away with its siren blaring.
Shortly after it left, the wedding car exploded in a massive blast.
At the hotel.
Michael hadn't seen Elizabeth and was getting worried.
He called her, but she didn't answer.
He looked around the banquet hall. Pearl and Nolan were seated among the guests. Susan was comforting Francis.
He decided to call Dean.
"Dean, have you seen Elizabeth? She's not answering her phone."
Dean, who was drinking with Daniel, frowned. "Seriously? Elizabeth always has to cause trouble at times like this."
He hung up and called Elizabeth.
The phone rang and rang, but no one answered.
He then tried calling the wedding car driver, but the call couldn't connect.
Dean's frown deepened.
He called Michael back. "Elizabeth is in trouble."
Michael instructed Ronnie, "Check all the surveillance footage along the wedding car's route. Elizabeth is missing."
Ronnie nodded and left.
The lights in the hospital operating room were on.
Zander paced anxiously in the hallway.
He prayed that nothing would happen to his Cordelia.
He had already sent his men to investigate the truck. Once he found the culprit or the mastermind, he would make them wish they were dead.
He would make them experience the Murphy family's methods of dealing with enemies.
A doctor emerged from the operating room. "Are you Cordelia's family?"
Zander immediately responded, "Yes, I am."
"The patient suffered multiple fractures. The broken bones punctured her heart and lungs. She didn't make it. I'm sorry for your loss."
Zander felt the world spinning around him and instinctively leaned against the wall for support.
The doctor continued, "The baby was delivered just in time and is unharmed. The nurse has taken her to the neonatal intensive care unit. You can go see her."
Zander regained a bit of composure and managed to speak. "The baby? Cordelia's baby is okay?"
"Yes. The baby has a wristband marked 'Cordelia's daughter.' You can go see her."
Zander's voice was hoarse. "Thank you, doctor. Can I see Cordelia?"
"You can't enter the operating room. We'll move her to the recovery room soon, and you can follow."
In a van, Elizabeth was sound asleep. The sound of a scuffle outside woke her.
She rubbed her eyes, sat up, and opened the door.
"Michael? Ronnie? You finally found me?"
She stretched with a big yawn.
The bodyguards had subdued all the men in black.
Michael rushed over, grabbing her and checking her over. "Are you hurt?"
Elizabeth waved him off. "I'm fine. I just took a nap. This was all Cordelia's doing. She wanted to stop our wedding. Didn't you see her?"
"The news said your wedding car was in an accident. The car was destroyed, and everyone inside died."
Elizabeth was instantly wide awake. "Destroyed? Everyone died?"
Michael nodded, his eyes full of worry. "Someone orchestrated the crash to kill you."
Elizabeth frowned. "Besides Jennifer, I can't think of anyone else who hates me this much."
Michael hugged her. "Elizabeth, marrying you is no easy task. When I saw the news, I almost wanted to die with you."
Elizabeth, still shaken, nestled into his arms. "Don't say that. We need to live well."
At the hospital, in the neonatal intensive care unit.
Zander stood by an incubator, quietly watching the baby girl inside, tears in his eyes.
"Cordelia, you went through so much to have this child and died for it. Do you regret it?"
A bodyguard spoke softly beside him. "Mr. Murphy, we found out."
Zander gestured for him to speak outside. "This is a hospital. Don't taint the baby's ears."
The bodyguard followed him to the stairwell.
"Mr. Murphy, we didn't have to use many methods. The truck driver confessed everything."
"The mastermind?"
"An old woman named Jennifer. She's the CEO of FutureTech Robotics Group."
Zander's eyes narrowed. "Jennifer? An enemy of the Murphy family?"
The bodyguard shook his head. "No. She has a grudge against Elizabeth. She was targeting Elizabeth."
Zander's face was full of rage. "She had a grudge against Elizabeth and dragged Cordelia into it? Send more men. Capture Jennifer! Take her to Majestic City!"
"Lock her underground for a few days! Make sure she gets special treatment! Let her experience the Murphy family's methods! Don't let her die easily! Torture her slowly!"
"Yes, Mr. Murphy!"
The bodyguard left.
Zander returned to the ward and gently lifted the baby girl from the incubator.
"Your mom is gone. From now on, you'll live with me. When you grow up, I'll go find your mom."
He held the baby and walked out of the hospital.
The driver came to meet him. "Mr. Murphy, are we heading back?"
Zander got into the back seat, his face like ice. "Today is Michael's wedding. Let's go join the party."
In the banquet hall, guests were mingling.
The wedding had been hastily completed.
As Elizabeth put it, even if they weren't tired of it, the guests were.
Michael whispered in her ear, "But I could never get tired of looking at you."
Zander stood at the entrance of the banquet hall, holding the baby, coldly watching their display of affection.
"Cordelia, even if you managed to get Michael, he would never love you. Was it worth it?"
He looked at the baby in his arms. "Michael, I'll raise your child for you. Consider it repaying my debt."
Zander didn't go in. He turned and left, telling the driver, "Get some people. We're taking Cordelia home. She hated this place."
"Yes, Mr. Murphy. Everything is arranged. We can leave anytime."
Zander nodded and took one last look at the newlyweds in the banquet hall.
"Let's go. We won't set foot here again."
Inside the banquet hall, Elizabeth looked out the glass doors.
Michael followed her gaze. "What are you looking at?"
"I don't know. That figure looked familiar."
Michael put his arm around her shoulders and led her back to the guests. "Come on, there's nothing to see. From now on, you only look at me."
Elizabeth gave him a sultry smile. "You too."
