Chapter 22 Who Else Is Willing to Help Her?

She set down her glass, suddenly remembering something, and shot a wide-eyed look at Elizabeth. "Elizabeth, why are you asking this? Are you seriously pregnant with his kid? Let me tell you, if you are, you better get an abortion ASAP. He won't let you keep it. You know how he rolls. No room for negotiation."

Elizabeth was sipping her water and almost choked when she heard Margaret's words. She coughed like crazy.

"Margaret, what are you even thinking? I hate him so much there's no way I'd have his kid. Do I look like I have a death wish?" Elizabeth shot back.

Margaret nodded, looking thoughtful. "Yeah, that's true. Michael doesn't like you, either. He wouldn't give you the chance to get pregnant."

Margaret stood up and paid the bill. "This meal's on me. Elizabeth, remember, only I am fit to be Michael's wife. He'll divorce you sooner or later."

With that, she pushed back her chair and left gracefully.

Elizabeth watched her walk out the restaurant door. Once she was sure Margaret was gone, she grabbed her bag and headed to the hospital.

Back at the obstetrics clinic, the doctor checked all her test reports on the computer.

The doctor said, "This time, the test results are good. The fetus is developing in a healthy way. Your blood sugar levels are also within the normal range. Just keep a regular diet. No need for body management. However, moderate exercise is fine. It's beneficial for a smooth delivery."

Elizabeth had already decided to keep the two kids.

She was going to take good care of them.

The doctor smiled at her and said, "Twins are rare. Make sure to take good care of the babies. Keep your emotions stable. Eat well and rest well. Avoid overexertion."

Elizabeth nodded gently in agreement.

From this moment on, the kids in her belly were her top priority.

Since the fetus was already three months old, the doctor took out a maternity file and had Elizabeth fill in some basic info. They'd follow up regularly.

The doctor told Elizabeth that the file had the dates for genetic disease screening and the next ultrasound. She should note them on her phone and set reminders. Come for regular check-ups.

Elizabeth noted it down.

She left the hospital and took a cab back to the Thomas Family.

After being at the hospital all day, her waist and legs were sore, and her feet hurt. So she decided to go back to her room and get some good sleep.

At seven pm, She got up, washed her face, and then went to the dining room.

Susan had left her some food.

Elizabeth ate a few bites and then went back to her room.

Michael still hadn't come back.

Elizabeth rummaged through her bag and took out the list of investors that Charles had given her at the company earlier that day.

She started making calls one by one with the list.

"Hello?"

"Who is this?" the other person asked.

"Hi, this is Elizabeth, from The Jones Group," she replied.

The person on the other end immediately hung up.

Elizabeth crossed off that name and dialed the next number.

"Hello."

"Hello, who is this?" This CEO sounded a bit more polite.

"Hi, this is Elizabeth from The Jones Group."

"Oh, the company about to declare bankruptcy?" The CEO hung up, too.

Elizabeth crossed off another name and moved on to the next.

"Our company's new product has great market potential," she tried to persuade.

"If your new product is so good, why do you need to keep pushing it to me?" the other person said.

Elizabeth replied, "No, our new product hasn't officially launched yet. In a few days, we will hold a product launch event. At that time, we will introduce the product's features in detail."

"Aren't you about to go bankrupt? Do you still have money to hold a launch event?" The phone was hung up again.

Elizabeth spent half an hour calling almost all the numbers on the list.

Each call lasted less than one minutes.

No one was willing to listen to her pitch.

She had never been involved in business before, let alone sought investment.

AlthoughRobert and Jennifer hadn't given her much money when she was in want of money,  she had never been as troubled by money as she was today.

Would Robert be as humble as she jsut did when seeking investment?

How many social events did he have to attend, how many phone calls did he have to make to  attract investment? All along, had she underestimated the difficulty of doing business?

Was it always this hard for Robert?

Frustration flooded throught her.

Everyone was advising her to give up.

But she didn't want to give up. That was Robert's life's work.

But if she didn't give up, what could she do?

Who else in this world could help her?

Elizabeth collapsed on the bed, her eyes vacant, staring at the ceiling.

Robert had wronged Nancy when he was alive.

After marrying Jennifer, he didn't treat Elizabeth well.

In Elizabeth's view, he had poured all his love into Patricia.

But it seemed he had a moment of epiphany before he died.

Elizabeth forgave him easily.

She didn't want to dwell on the past anymore.

Robert was her biological father.

She didn't want The Jones Group, which he had founded, to fall apart.

She felt stifled.

She sat up and walked out.

Michael was probably working late at the company tonight.

The living room was dark and silent.

Susan had already noticed her bad mood tonight and had gone back to her own room early.

The cool evening breeze blew in from outside, gently stirring the white curtains by the window.

Elizabeth turned on a small light in the living room.

She walked to the window.

She looked up, gazing at the night sky through the open window.

In this quiet night, memories surged over her like a tide.

In recent days, she had felt like she was being pushed forward by an external force.

No one had asked if everything was her own choice.

Even if others knew that she wanted to refuse everything, no one was willing to consider her feelings.

She had always been helpless and passive.

Even the children in her belly were not something she initially wanted.

Her life seemed to be planned by others.
