Chapter 305 That's All
"Hey, Elizabeth, did you catch the morning news?" Dean asked.
Elizabeth shook her head. "Nope, missed it."
"Figures, you probably didn't have time." He pulled out his phone and showed her a webpage.
Elizabeth's eyes widened. "Is that... Jennifer?"
"Yep. Last night, Jennifer's terrace was covered with dead rats. Her screams woke up the neighbors. One of them wanted to call the cops, but she stopped them. But some paparazzi lurking nearby snapped photos and posted them online."
Elizabeth shrugged. "Well, she's even more famous now."
Dean looked at her intently. "Elizabeth, don't you think this is too much of a coincidence?"
"You mean... me?" Elizabeth pointed to herself.
Dean nodded. "You just got freaked out by a rat in your car, and now Jennifer's place is swarming with dead ones. Doesn't it seem like deliberate revenge?"
Elizabeth fell silent, deep in thought.
Dean added, "Even though I don't like Michael, this has his subordinates' fingerprints all over it. It's his style—never let an enemy off easy."
Elizabeth looked puzzled. "His enemy?"
"Clearly, he's marked you as one of his own. Messing with you is messing with him. Jennifer's playing with fire. Michael's giving her a warning. If she backs off, he might let it go. If she keeps pushing, who knows what he'll do. I can't even imagine. He's ruthless."
Elizabeth wondered, 'Is he doing this for me, or for the child I'm carrying?'
Meanwhile, in a luxury apartment, Jennifer was on the phone with Calla.
Calla was furious. "Jennifer, can't you think of a smarter plan? How could you get caught so easily? You're not a kid anymore. Michael found out again, didn't he? And now you're a public laughingstock."
"Calla, why are you so impatient with me? I'm still your elder."
Calla's tone was exasperated. "Do you act like one?"
Jennifer protested. "At least I was once your dad's girlfriend."
Calla retorted sharply, "You said it—'once.' Now you're his ex."
"Give me another chance, and I'll make Elizabeth wish she were dead."
Calla crossed her arms, unmoved. "I only care about my two billion dollars."
"Once I deal with Elizabeth, I'll fix my reputation. I'll hire some PR to put out positive stories. The internet moves fast; today's scandal is tomorrow's forgotten news. Once the company's stock rebounds, I'll pay you back."
Calla was even more impatient. "You think it's that easy? How do you know people will believe you? Not everyone is a fool. How much longer do you need?"
Jennifer raised an eyebrow. "Are you desperate for money?"
"Anthony's out of work. Where do you think our income comes from?"
Jennifer smirked. "You're really devoted to Anthony, huh?"
"Cut the crap. How many days?"
"Calla, I've contacted Silver King. Do you think Elizabeth stands a chance against him?"
Calla was shocked. "Silver King? You got him involved? But he's always in Valoria, far from here, and this isn't his territory."
Jennifer laughed coldly. "Just because it's not his territory doesn't mean we can't send Elizabeth to him."
Calla was intrigued. "You have a plan? How?"
"Calla, you don't need to know. Just wait for the good news. Then Michael will be yours, with no one to compete with."
Calla hesitated. "Can I still trust you?"
Jennifer became smug. "You have no choice."
Calla was seething inside but helpless.
In a chic little restaurant, Elizabeth and Sarah met up for a meal. Soft lights hung from the walls, and the air was filled with the aroma of freshly baked bread and herbs.
Sarah sighed, "Elizabeth, since I got married, it feels like we haven't had a chance to catch up like this."
Elizabeth nodded, holding her cup. "Yeah, marriage tends to shift your focus to family."
Sarah complained. "David's mom keeps asking when we're having kids. I don't want to answer that. It's our decision. We should have kids when we're ready, not because someone else says so."
Elizabeth smiled. "True. Maybe she just wants to help with the kids while she's still able. She might be worried that if she gets too old, she won't have the energy to help."
Sarah pondered. "Maybe... I might have misjudged her."
Elizabeth patted her hand. "Don't overthink it. Having kids should happen naturally."
Sarah frowned. "Elizabeth, I do love kids and want to have one with David. But like you said, it should be natural, not forced like breeding animals. That kind of pressure ruins it for me."
Elizabeth took a sip of water. "You should talk to David about it. If you both agree, he can explain to his mom why you're not ready yet. I'm sure she'll understand."
Sarah brightened up. "You're right, Elizabeth. I've been so stressed about this."
Elizabeth laughed. "Why didn't you tell me sooner? I could've helped you figure it out. Even if you don't take my advice, just talking about it can relieve some of your frustration."
Sarah raised her glass. "Exactly. I love my freedom; maybe I shouldn't have gotten married."
Elizabeth was alarmed. "Whoa, where did that come from? Are you drunk?"
She shook the half-empty wine bottle in front of Sarah.
Sarah waved her hand. "No way! I'm perfectly sober."
She nudged Elizabeth's shoulder. "I haven't asked you yet. How are things with Michael?"
Elizabeth's tone dropped. "Same as always. What else?"
Sarah leaned in, curiosity evident in her eyes. "What do you mean 'same as always'? Spill!"
Elizabeth shrugged. "He's the father of my baby. That's it. Nothing more."
Sarah winked. "Nothing more? Then how do you explain those hickeys on your neck?"
