Chapter 220 Deeply in Love with That Person

Dean glanced at Daniel and asked quietly, "Do you always follow Michael's orders without question? Are you that loyal to him? Do you go all out to complete every task he gives you, even if it means hurting me?"

His eyes, usually so carefree during the day, now showed nothing but hurt.

But Daniel was already out cold, fast asleep and unable to answer.

Daniel turned over, clutching the blanket tightly, and mumbled in his sleep, "Dean, why don't you drink?"

Dean gave a bitter smile. "Even in your dreams, you're still thinking about Michael's tasks?"

He bent down, took off Daniel's shoes and socks, helped him out of his coat, and tucked him in—just because he remembered Daniel saying he liked a warm bed.

Dean turned off the light and gently closed the door.

He got back into the car and said softly, "Take me to Whispering Pines Estates."

The driver asked with concern, "Sir, is something bothering you?"

Dean gave a wry smile, "Is it that obvious?"

The driver said, "Since we don't know each other, why not share what's on your mind? I might not be able to offer much comfort, but talking about it might make you feel better."

Dean asked, "Under what circumstances would someone follow another person's orders without question and always be there for them?"

Without hesitation, the driver replied, "They must really love that person."

Did Daniel really love Michael?

Dean fell silent.

The next morning, Daniel called Michael, "Mr. Thomas. I got drunk last night. But I did get some information."

Michael said, "Tell me."

Daniel said, "Dean used to have a brain tumor and had brain surgery in Valoria."

Michael asked, "Did Elizabeth help him with it?"

"That's what I thought at first. But Dean said it was Ms. Johnson. He said Elizabeth was still a student at the time," Daniel said.

Michael seemed somewhat disappointed. "Is that all?"

Daniel replied, "...I'm sorry; that's all I found out. Last night, Dean kept making me drink. I didn't get anything else."

Michael said, "Alright. Take the day off and rest. And don't drink so much next time. Dean might already be on guard."

Daniel didn't want to hang up the phone. "Mr. Thomas."

"What?" Michael asked.

"Mr. Thomas, are you investigating Dean for Elizabeth?" Daniel said.

Michael said, "Yes. I need to thoroughly investigate any clues related to Ms. Johnson's students."

Daniel asked, "Mr. Thomas, you're not trying to rekindle things with Elizabeth, are you?"

Michael said, "Daniel, do you know what you're saying?"

Daniel said, "I'm sorry. I just think Elizabeth shouldn't have divorced you! She has no idea how much you love her."

"Daniel, you should get some sleep! Go to work after you sober up!" Michael hung up the phone and continued eating breakfast.

He thought to himself, 'That Daniel is really nagging! He's always bringing up Elizabeth.'

Michael recalled that night—Elizabeth's mocking expression and her deeply insulting remark, "Why would I want to see you? To have an affair behind your current and former girlfriends' back?"

Was that what she thought of him?

Michael suddenly found his breakfast tasteless.

He put down his fork, took a sip of water, and stood up.

Susan saw him stand up and approached. "Mr. Thomas, is today's breakfast not to your liking?"

"No. I just ate too much last night." With that, he walked towards the door.

Susan opened the door for him.

The driver and bodyguard were already waiting for Michael in the yard.

The bodyguard opened the car door for him.

As he got into the car, his phone rang. It was Calla. "Michael, my dad's back in the country. He heard I have a boyfriend and wants to meet you. Are you free tonight?"

Michael replied, "I'm free."

Calla said, "Okay. I'll send you the restaurant address and room number this afternoon."

"Alright." Michael remained expressionless.

Calla hesitated on the other end, while Michael was ready to hang up. "Calla, if there's nothing else, I'll..."

Calla said, "Michael, I don't know how to say this. My mom and dad are divorced. My dad will be bringing his girlfriend tonight."

"Okay," Michael said.

"If you don't want to go, you can tell me." Calla had always tried to present herself as a considerate girlfriend, making an effort to seem warm, understanding, and sensible to Michael.

Michael said, "It's fine. We have to meet eventually."

Calla breathed a sigh of relief.

At Whispering Pines Estates, Dean and Elizabeth were having breakfast together.

Elizabeth asked, "When did you get back last night? Or did you stay out all night again?"

Dean replied, "Elizabeth, don't underestimate me. I didn't drink much last night, just a few sips. But Daniel—I got him drunk."

Elizabeth asked, "How did you manage to make up your mind this time?"

Dean said, "You were right. Daniel wasn't just inviting me for a drink. He planned to get me drunk and extract information about you from me. Luckily, I was prepared. He asked who performed my brain surgery, and I told him it was Ms. Johnson. He believed it. He probably reported that to Michael."

Elizabeth peeled a shrimp and put it on Dean's plate. "Alright, here's a reward for you. You finally did something smart."

Dean continued eating happily.

In the evening, Michael arrived at the restaurant where he had arranged to meet Calla.

Calla introduced Michael. "Michael, this is my dad, Toby Griffin."

Michael nodded slightly. "Mr. Griffin, nice to meet you!"

Toby responded with a smile.

Calla pointed to the woman next to Toby. "Michael, this is my dad's girlfriend, Ms. Johnson."

The moment Michael saw this woman, his eyebrows furrowed tightly.

He didn't say anything and just sat down in his seat.

Calla awkwardly called out, "Michael."

Michael pretended not to hear.

Toby sensed the awkward atmosphere.

He looked at Jennifer and Michael and said, "Michael, do you and Jennifer know each other?"

Jennifer smiled. "Toby, Michael is my stepdaughter Elizabeth's ex-husband. I've only met Michael once, at their wedding."

Toby suddenly understood. "I didn't know you had that connection."

Jennifer looked at Michael and said, "But that shouldn't matter now. Elizabeth's father has passed away, and she and Michael are divorced."

Michael remained silent, regretting that he had accepted Calla's invitation.

Calla also noticed Michael's displeasure.

She busied herself pouring water for everyone and tried to change the subject. "Dad, are you planning to marry Ms. Johnson now that you're back?"

Toby looked at Jennifer with deep affection. "I met Jennifer abroad, and she has been very good to me. After your mom left, I've always felt lonely. Yet, Jennifer filled that void in my heart. If Jennifer is willing, I would consider proposing to her."

Jennifer put on a shy expression. "Toby, why would you say that in front of them?"

Calla said, "Ms. Johnson, I heard you have a big business abroad. Are you planning to develop it here or just stay temporarily?"

Jennifer's expression showed a fleeting moment of resentment. "I'm back to handle some personal matters. My brother was framed and imprisoned. I need to save him."
