Chapter 62 The Truth

Elizabeth tightly gripped her phone, her heart suddenly pounding.

This was the first time Michael had asked her out and sought her opinion. It felt like she was falling in love for the first time.

Nervously, she held the phone and softly said, "I'm free."

Michael said, "Alright, the driver will pick you up at 6:00 PM. I'll send the address to your phone."

Elizabeth hung up the phone, clutching her pounding chest. Bewitched, she opened the wardrobe in the CEO's office, looking at the spare clothes she had stored there, which were mostly long-sleeve sweatshirts and jeans.

She quickly grabbed her phone and bag, took the elevator down and exited The Jones Group building, she hailed a cab and headed straight to the mall.

Elizabeth skipped the fancy brand counters 'cause she was kinda broke at the moment.

She headed straight to the women's discount section at the mall. The sales assistant suggested she try on this light brown, long-sleeved dress.

The dress had a white lace high collar with a thin dark brown ribbon tied at the neck. The chest area was tailored to show off her curves, making her bust look great.

The waist was snug, cinched with a thin light brown leather belt that had a circle of small rhinestones on the buckle, sparkling under the lights.

The whole dress had this mature yet sweet vibe, dignified but playful.

Elizabeth checked herself out in the mirror and felt pretty good about it. She paid and left.

Next, she hit up a nearby store and grabbed a pair of leather shoes in the same color.

All set, she checked the time. It was almost time to meet Michael.

She quickly took a cab to The Jones Group building. Instead of going upstairs, she waited outside for Michael's driver to pick her up.

Ever since she got robbed, Elizabeth had been wearing the watch Michael gave her every day.

Right now, she glanced at the watch and a shy smile crept onto her face.

Across the street, a black Rolls-Royce was parked under the trees.

Michael, sitting in the back seat, saw Elizabeth waiting with a big bag and her handbag.

He noticed her checking the time and that shy smile that only a girl in love would have.

Michael felt a wave of tenderness.

He remembered she wasn't wearing this outfit when he left this morning.

He saw the mall logo on her bag and realized she must've gone shopping after his call.

Did she buy new clothes and shoes just to see him?

It seemed like she really cared about this meeting.

Was it for him?

Seeing her all dressed up made Michael's mood lift. He told the driver, "Let's go."

The black Rolls-Royce slowly pulled up in front of Elizabeth.

The driver got out and opened the door for her. Elizabeth got in and noticed Michael sitting in the back seat.

She nervously clutched her clothing bag and tucked her hair behind her ear.

Michael looked out the window, pretending not to notice her.

Elizabeth cleared her throat to break the silence. "So, where are we going for dinner?"

Michael turned to her. "The Daily Grind,"

Elizabeth racked her brain for something to say to avoid the awkward silence.

Sarah's message popped up: [Elizabeth, remember how you said David was gonna invest $500 million in your company? Well, I forgot to tell you this morning, but that money isn't David's. It's from a rich friend of his. This guy married his wife just days after meeting her, and now her company’s in deep financial trouble. He wants to help her out, but she’s not having it and even wants a divorce. So, he came up with this plan to funnel the $500 million through David, so she wouldn’t know it’s from him.]

Elizabeth read Sarah's messages, her fingers froze, and her eyes went blank in an attitude of disbelief.

She silently put her phone away, tucked it into her handbag, and turned to Michael with a cold stare.

"Stop the car, Michael," she demanded.

"What's wrong? We're not there yet," Michael said, confused. She had been smiling shyly just a moment ago, and now her face was icy cold.

He guessed it had something to do with the message she just got.

"Was it a message from Samuel?" he asked tentatively.

Elizabeth snapped, "Why does it have to be from Samuel? Michael, how many things are you hiding from me? Do you enjoy treating me like a fool? Like a cat playing with a mouse, controlling me to satisfy your possessiveness?"

Michael was baffled. "Which thing on earth are you talking about? How did I offend you?"

Elizabeth raised her chin and said coldly, "Stop the car, Mr. F!"

Michael finally got it. He remembered that chaotic night at the Elysium Club.

For a moment, he didn’t know how to explain it to her.

He quietly told the driver, "Keep going to The Daily Grind."

Elizabeth shouted, "Michael, I said stop the car! I want out! Who wants to go to a restaurant with you? You pervert! Am I your plaything? Just because you have money, you think you can toy with me, my body, and my feelings?"

This time, Michael didn’t argue.

Elizabeth angrily stared out the window, ignoring him.

After a while, Michael gently explained, "I'm sorry, I didn’t mean to deceive you. I just didn’t know how to face you. I was afraid you wouldn’t accept my help. I used the wrong method. I apologize."

Elizabeth still didn’t look at him. She spoke to the window, "Why didn’t you come to me yourself and instead had someone else contact me? Do you think helping The Jones Group would make you lose face?"
