Chapter 211 His Secret
Michael's phone buzzed.
When he checked, it was the private detective. "Mr. Thomas."
"Go ahead," Michael said.
"We've looked into all of Ms. Johnson's students in the neurology field. Their skills match Calla's. Recently, Calla also hired a private detective to track down a retired cranial surgery professor with top-notch skills," the detective reported.
Michael asked, "Is she trying to find someone to treat Eloise?"
"Most likely. We also discovered that Ms. Johnson had a final, very important disciple before she passed away. This disciple is quite mysterious, and there's no info about him online. We can't dig any deeper," the detective replied.
Michael said, "You took my job, so finish it. Figure it out yourselves. I just want results."
Meanwhile, Elizabeth was driving.
Nolan asked, "Mom, can I switch schools?"
Elizabeth was confused. "Isn't Global Horizons International School good?"
Nolan replied, "It's great."
"Then why do you want to transfer?" Elizabeth asked.
Nolan looked down. He had agreed to go to Global Horizons International School because he saw Michael's car.
Elizabeth's reaction to seeing that car was strange.
He felt something was off and wanted to learn more about that car.
So, he agreed to stay.
He never expected that the owner of that Rolls-Royce would be his and Pearl's father.
Now that he knew the whole truth, there was no need to stay any longer.
Moreover, he originally had a classroom to himself, very free.
Now, Eloise always came to find him, and the teachers always let her in.
Nolan was unhappy.
Since Elizabeth became upset every time she saw Eloise, there was no way he would like Eloise or get along with her.
The quickest solution was for him to transfer schools.
As long as he went to another school, Eloise would never find him again.
Elizabeth thought for a moment. "Nolan, let's find a weekend, and I'll go with you to check out other schools."
Nolan said, "Okay."
On the other side, the car stopped in front of the Thomas family villa, and Michael helped Eloise out of the car.
It was already autumn, and the leaves in the garden were starting to turn yellow.
The gardeners were busy trimming branches and cleaning up fallen leaves.
Eloise wanted to stroll in the garden.
But Michael tried to stop her. "Eloise, it's cold in the garden. Let's go upstairs."
Eloise shook her head. "No, Michael, I want to pick up fallen leaves. The other day, I saw Nolan picking up leaves. It looked fun."
Michael got a headache just thinking about Nolan.
Nolan looked so much like Michael when Michael was young. But he was full of hostility towards Michael.
If Michael and Elizabeth's child were still alive, they would be about Nolan's age.
Michael stood in the garden, watching Eloise happily pick up the fallen leaves.
He thought, 'Do other fathers play and have fun with their children? Or do they just quietly watch their children play? How many fathers in this world are like me and Eloise's father—devoid of tenderness or love for their children, almost like demons?'
Those past memories, too painful to recall, were the root of his nightmares.
Suddenly, Michael remembered something and quickly walked to the study.
He closed the study door and instructed the bodyguard that no one was allowed in without his permission.
The bodyguard stood guard at the study door.
Michael walked to the second row of bookshelves.
He reached out to touch the box.
It had been in that same spot for so many years, never moving. He even saw it there last month.
But this time, he couldn't find it.
Michael's heart sank with a sense of dread. He pulled all the books off the shelf, but the box was gone.
Sweat beaded on his forehead.
He put the books back in place.
He opened the door and told the bodyguard, "Get me the surveillance footage from the study for the past month."
His face was like a frozen mask, cold and stern.
The bodyguard quickly followed orders.
Soon, the bodyguard returned with the footage.
Michael said, "Get a team to check who has been in my study and taken anything out in the past month."
The bodyguard got to work.
Half an hour later, the bodyguard reported back. "Mr. Thomas, besides you, only Susan has been in the study this past month. But she was just cleaning and didn't take anything."
It couldn't be Susan. She'd been with the Thomas family for years. If she wanted that box, she wouldn't have waited until now.
Susan noticed the serious atmosphere and asked Michael, "Mr. Thomas, what's wrong?"
Michael said, "I lost something in the study. We're trying to find out who took it."
Eloise looked scared.
She said, "Michael, it wasn't me."
Her face was pale, and she was shaking.
Michael quickly hugged her. "I know it wasn't you."
Michael told Susan, "Take Eloise back to her room."
The bodyguard said, "Mr. Thomas, do you remember when you brought Elizabeth back to the villa a while ago?"
"I remember. Why?" Michael asked.
The bodyguard said, "At that time, the villa's network and surveillance systems were hacked and went down. So, we don't have footage from that period."
Michael squinted, thinking, 'Nolan again! That brat.'
Eloise, who hadn't left yet, heard them mention Nolan and started to worry about him.
But she believed Nolan wouldn't just take Michael's things.
This had nothing to do with Nolan and Pearl.
Still, Eloise went back to her room because Michael's scary expression reminded her of someone else terrifying.
Michael returned to his bedroom.
He tried to figure out who could have taken the box or where it could be. That box held his secret—his deeply feared secret.
If it got out, he would be ruined.
Stellar Enterprises' stock would crash, and he'd never recover. If someone with bad intentions had the box, he was done for.
He called Elizabeth just after she finished dinner. She couldn't imagine why Michael was calling her at this hour. She answered, "Michael."
Michael said, "Elizabeth, something is missing from my study."
Elizabeth replied, "I don't live in your house, and I didn't take your things. Why are you calling me?"
"A while ago, I brought you over. Your kids came to see you." Michael felt awkward saying this.
Sure enough, Elizabeth was angry. "Michael, are you accusing my kids of taking your stuff?"
Michael suddenly stood up nervously, even though he was alone in his bedroom.
He said, "It's not like that. My bodyguard checked all the footage. Besides Susan, no one entered my study."
Elizabeth said, "Did it just sprout wings and fly away?"
Michael was serious. "Elizabeth, don't joke around. That thing is very important to me."
"Sorry," Elizabeth said.
Michael said, "It's okay. I just wanted to say that when your kids came to my house, the surveillance system was hacked."
