Chapter 212 She Looks Like She's Having an Affair

Michael didn't wait for Elizabeth to say anything and quickly added, "I'm not saying they took it on purpose. I just want to know if you could ask the kids if they've seen a dark red square box in my study. If they have, can they tell me where it is?"

Elizabeth could hear the worry in Michael's voice. "Michael, is this thing really important to you?"

Michael's voice had a hint of pain. "Yes."

Elizabeth's heart softened. "Don't worry. I'll ask the kids right now and look around my house."

Michael said, "Thank you."

Elizabeth didn't expect Michael to have such a vulnerable side.

He actually said, "Thank you."

She was about to hang up the phone when Michael shouted, "Elizabeth! If you find that box in your house, please, don't open it."

Elizabeth found it strange but agreed. "Okay, I won't open it."

Michael actually begged her. He seemed like a different person.

If the thing he mentioned was really lost, would he break down?

Elizabeth's heart suddenly softened.

At this moment, she forgot all the excessive things he had done to her.

She only felt sorry for him.

Elizabeth hung up the phone and started looking for a dark red square box in her house.

Pearl saw her and asked, "Mom, what are you looking for?"

Elizabeth replied, "Michael said he lost a box. I'm helping him look for it to see if it's in our house."

Pearl fell silent and looked at Nolan with a panicked expression.

Nolan walked over and said, "Mom, how could Michael's stuff be in our house? Unless it grew wings and flew over. Don't waste your time."

Elizabeth's gaze shifted from the ground to Nolan.

She asked, "Nolan, Pearl, when you went to Michael's house, did you see a dark red square box?"

Nolan tightly held Pearl's trembling hand and shook his head. "Mom, we went there to find you. How could we notice his stuff?"

Elizabeth nodded. "You're right. You two are just kids. Why would you take his stuff? I'll tell him."

Nolan held Pearl's hand and they went back to their room.

Pearl closed the door and quietly asked Nolan, "Nolan, did we lie? Is this right?"

Nolan said, "We can't tell the truth. If Michael finds out we took it, he'll definitely blame Mom. Then he'll use it as an excuse to bully Mom again."

Pearl nodded indignantly. "Nolan, you're right! We can't tell him!"

Nolan said, "Exactly! I can't stand him always acting superior and bullying Mom. I want to see him anxious!"

Nolan had already opened the box and seen its contents.

He knew why Michael was nervous and anxious.

The contents of that box held the power to control Michael.

Nolan was also afraid Elizabeth would find the box, so he buried it under the rose bush in the garden.

Elizabeth went back to her room to call Michael. "Michael, I didn't find the box you mentioned. The kids didn't notice it either."

Michael's low voice came through, "Okay. I see. Thank you."

His voice lacked its usual strength.

Elizabeth was a bit worried about him. "Michael, are you okay?"

Michael replied, "I'm fine."

Elizabeth said, "Then get some rest."

"Okay," Michael said.

Elizabeth hung up the phone and went to wash up and sleep.

Three days later, Sarah called Elizabeth. "Elizabeth, Michael is in the hospital. Did you hear?"

Elizabeth was stunned. "What's wrong with him?"

Sarah said, "I heard it's a stomach bleed. David went to see him today."

Elizabeth asked, "Is it serious?"

"Probably not. I'm not sure. Elizabeth, you're not still worried about him, are you? He has two women with him now. It's not your place to worry about him," Sarah said.

Elizabeth's heart tightened. She said, "I was just asking."

Sarah replied, "Good. Don't go soft on him just because he's sick!"

"I know," Elizabeth said.

After hanging up, Elizabeth immediately called Susan. Susan answered, "Elizabeth."

"Susan, is Michael in the hospital?" Elizabeth asked.

Susan replied, "Yes, in the gastroenterology department at Unity Medical Center."

Elizabeth asked again, "What happened to him?"

"The doctor said it was caused by excessive stress and drinking," Susan said.

Elizabeth said, "He drank?"

Susan said, "Something happened, he couldn't think straight, couldn't sleep, and drank to help him sleep. He drank too much and had a stomach bleed."

Elizabeth said, "Okay, I understand."

Susan asked, "Elizabeth, do you want to visit him?"

"Michael and I are divorced. Visiting him would be inappropriate. Besides, Calla wouldn't be happy about it," Elizabeth said.

Susan responded sadly, "Alright. But he is quite pitiful."

Elizabeth hung up the phone.

She sat in her office, feeling very confused.

Too much stress? Was it because he couldn't find that box? Was that box so important to him?

She left the company, bought a bouquet of sunflowers from a nearby store, and drove to Unity Medical Center.

Elizabeth stood in front of the nurse's station in the gastroenterology department, looking for Michael's name on the patient board.

A young nurse came over and asked, "Miss, do you need help?"

Elizabeth quickly shook her head. "No, thank you."

Having already found Michael's bed number, she walked towards his room with a sense of unease, afraid of running into Calla.

She felt like she was sneaking around, as if she were having an affair.

Elizabeth reached Michael's room and stood outside, looking in through the glass on the door.

Michael was lying in bed with his eyes closed. He was on an IV, and his face was very pale.

Eloise was sitting by the bed, holding his hand.

Calla was sitting on the sofa against the wall.

Sarah was right. He had two women with him; he didn't need Elizabeth's visit.

With a heavy heart, Elizabeth lifted her feet and left reluctantly.

As she passed the nurse's station, she met the nurse who had asked her earlier.

She handed the sunflowers to the nurse.

She said, "These are for you. Your smile matches them perfectly."

The young nurse took the flowers and smiled at Elizabeth. "Thank you. Have a nice day!"

Elizabeth left the hospital.

Why did she come? She almost humiliated herself.

If Calla had seen her, she would have publicly mocked her again.

In the future, she should avoid putting herself in such humiliating situations.

In the hospital room, Michael suddenly opened his eyes.

It was as if he had heard Elizabeth's voice.

He turned his head to look out the door. There was no one there.

He said to Eloise, "I'm going for a walk."

Calla quickly stood up to help him with the IV bottle.

Michael said, "Thank you. I can do it myself."

He used his other hand to hold the IV bottle and slowly walked down the hallway.

There were family members, patients, doctors, and nurses coming and going in the hallway.

But there was no sign of Elizabeth.

Suddenly, Michael's attention was caught by a bouquet at the nurse's station.

The bright yellow flowers were blooming in a cylindrical glass vase.

There were still water droplets on the outside of the vase.

It was clear they had just been placed there.
