Chapter 285 The Truth of That Year
Deep down, Michael wondered if he'd be happy like this.
He didn't know. But it was the best choice.
Dean had driven Daniel and the kids back to Whispering Pines Estates.
The Thomas family's bodyguards, under Michael's orders, had already taken Eloise and Clio back to the Thomas family villa.
Michael found Elizabeth and said, "Let's go. I'll drive you back."
Elizabeth silently followed him, and the car ride back was eerily quiet.
Michael tried to make conversation. "Elizabeth, from a medical student's perspective, does Eloise need more surgery? Would continuing surgery cause her more harm?"
Yet Elizabeth's tone was cold. "Eloise isn't my patient. I don't know her condition or treatment plan. You should ask Calla. She's the doctor you hired to treat Eloise."
Hearing this, Michael felt a surge of frustration, thinking, 'Might as well not talk at all!'
He pressed harder on the gas, and the Rolls-Royce sped down the road like a cheetah.
Elizabeth gripped her seatbelt tightly, thinking, 'What's he doing? Driving so fast. Is he trying to kill us both?'
Michael gritted his teeth, his voice strained. "I won't bother you about Eloise's condition anymore!"
Elizabeth turned to look out the window and replied, "Good! Should I thank you for that?"
Michael's mind was in turmoil.
Why hadn't he told Elizabeth from the start that Eloise was his sister?
If Elizabeth had known the truth earlier, would things have turned out differently? Would she have spoken to him without such coldness?
But there was no going back.
Michael calmed himself and said, "Elizabeth, if I told you that Eloise is actually..."
However, Elizabeth cut him off quickly. "Michael! You don't need to tell me! I don't care about you and Eloise!"
Michael persisted. "I want to tell you that Eloise is actually..."
But Elizabeth waved her hand and said, "Don't say it! I don't need to know! When I wanted the truth, you kept it from me, no matter how much I suffered. Now that we're divorced and no longer on the same path, there's no need to tell me anything!"
The car arrived at Whispering Pines Estates, and Elizabeth opened the door and got out, walking away quickly.
"Thanks for the ride," she said and didn't even look back at him.
What a stubborn and headstrong woman.
Michael watched her walk into the yard where Nolan and Pearl were waiting at the door.
Pearl ran into Elizabeth's arms and asked, "Mom, why did you take so long?"
Nolan glared at Michael, his lips pressed tightly together, staring at him like an enemy.
Michael felt uncomfortable under Nolan's gaze, which was eerily familiar.
Michael wondered if he looked like that in his childhood photos.
As a child, he had the same cold, hateful look, especially when he looked at that despicable man.
Knowing he wasn't welcome, Michael turned and drove away.
On the road, he kept thinking about Nolan's expression, realizing how much Nolan resembled him.
He remembered telling Elizabeth that if she had his child, he would strangle them.
Did Elizabeth tell Nolan and Pearl that, making them hate Michael?
Them?
Michael was stunned by this. He pulled over to the side of the road and thought carefully.
He finally recalled the flaw in what Elizabeth had said that day in the room.
She said he had forced her to abandon "them."
That meant she knew she was carrying more than one child!
Connecting the dots, with Pearl's resemblance to her and Nolan's resemblance to him, and their birthdays in April.
Michael's heart raced as a possibility occurred to him.
He couldn't wait another minute. He restarted the car and headed to Tomorrow's Cure Hospital.
That was the hospital where he had forced Elizabeth to have an abortion.
On the way, he called the bodyguard who had taken Elizabeth to the operating room.
Michael told the bodyguard to wait for him at the hospital's gynecology department. He needed to check the abortion records from back then.
When Michael arrived at the gynecology department, the bodyguard was already waiting.
The bodyguard said, "Mr. Thomas, I looked through the records. I couldn't find Elizabeth's."
Michael coldly ordered, "Get more people to search. Thoroughly. You were the one who brought her here for the procedure."
Hearing this, the bodyguard didn't dare say another word.
Several people searched the archives but found nothing.
Michael went to the office of the hospital director, Willard McCall, and explained the situation.
Willard stood up and said, "No records? There should be electronic records for all abortions. I'll take you to the gynecology department. We'll ask each doctor who was on duty back then."
Michael said, "Mr. McCall, let's keep this quiet. No need to make a scene."
Willard nodded repeatedly. "I see."
Half an hour later, an older female doctor stood before Willard and Michael.
She said, "I remember Ms. Jones well. She didn't want the abortion, but there was a menacing man outside. She threatened to kill herself if I performed the procedure. I was afraid she'd die on the table, so I agreed to help her hide it."
Hearing this, Michael let out a long breath.
So, Elizabeth hadn't had an abortion.
Michael thought, 'I knew it!"
He had been puzzled at the time, wondering why her belly was still swollen so long after the surgery.
When they were intimate, Elizabeth never let him touch her stomach.
Michael had thought she was just self-conscious about her slightly rounded belly.
Now he realized she was afraid he'd discover she was still pregnant.
That was why she left him in such a hurry, moving far away.
Those years, raising two kids, she must have endured a lot.
After all, she didn't have much financial support back then.
Michael thought of Pearl's smiling face, so much like Elizabeth's, just a smaller version. He wanted to kiss her, like he used to kiss Elizabeth.
As for Nolan, he was definitely Michael's son.
Nolan's look of hatred was just like Michael's when he looked at that vile man.
But Michael wondered how he could change Nolan's attitude towards him as his father.
