Chapter 330 Questioning

Anthony strolled back into the hospital room, flopped onto the couch, kicked his feet up on the coffee table, and started playing a game on his phone.

Calla recognized the game sounds and called out, "Anthony, you're back?"

Anthony didn't respond.

Calla had learned not to count on him. She pulled out her phone and used voice commands to call Toby.

When the call connected, Toby sounded annoyed. "What now?"

Calla yelled, "Dad! You need to come to Celestria and help me! I'm at the hospital!"

Toby's tone shifted to concern. "What's wrong? Is the baby okay?"

Calla reassured him, "The baby's fine for now."

Toby seemed to relax a bit. "As long as the baby's okay. What's going on with you?"

Calla fought back tears. "Dad, I can't see!"

Toby's voice turned cold. "If you can't see, go find a doctor. What do you expect me to do?"

Calla couldn't hold back her tears anymore. "Dad, please come help me! You're the only one who can."

Toby finally gave in. "Alright, I'll book a flight and come see you."

Anthony, still glued to his game, scoffed. "Calla, what's the point of calling your dad? You're blind, and that's not going to change just because he comes. Stop making a fuss and just rest."

Calla felt completely helpless. She couldn't see and had to rely on the Thomas family's caregivers and Anthony. Despite the anger boiling inside her, she didn't dare to argue back.

She lay on the hospital bed, her lips pressed tightly together, her hands clenched into fists under the blanket.

At Whispering Pines Estates, Dean was already asleep, and Pearl and Nolan were also in bed. Elizabeth had just finished her nighttime routine and was about to lie down when her phone rang.

It was Michael.

She found it odd that he was calling so late. Didn't he have the obedient Margaret by his side now? And even a version of her?

Despite her reluctance, Elizabeth answered the call.

"Michael, do you know what time it is? Is there something important?"

Though she sounded impatient, deep down, she was curious if he was calling because he missed her.

Michael was surprised she was already in bed and paused for a moment. "You were sleeping?"

Elizabeth snuggled into her blanket. "What do you think? It's late."

The next second, his words made her sit up in shock.

"I'm outside your door. Open up."

She got out of bed, not even bothering to put on her slippers, and ran to the window to peek outside.

Sure enough, under the streetlight at the front gate, his unmistakable Cullinan was parked there.

Elizabeth slipped on her slippers and tiptoed downstairs, passing through the living room to open the door for him.

Michael pushed the door open and strode into the yard. Elizabeth opened the front door for him and then turned to go back upstairs.

He changed his shoes and followed her up to her room.

In the sitting area of her bedroom, she sat on the couch, her feet propped up on an ottoman, and looked up at him. "So, what's so urgent that you had to come over this late?"

Michael sat on the ottoman across from her and placed her feet on his lap.

Elizabeth, uncomfortable with his sudden affection, pulled her feet back. "What's going on?"

Michael ignored her resistance and grabbed her feet again. "You brought me into your room, and now you're asking why I'm here?"

Elizabeth stared at him wide-eyed. "Michael, what are you talking about? Nolan and Pearl are asleep. Should I have let you talk in the living room and wake them up? Kids need their sleep!"

Michael nodded repeatedly. "Right, so let's keep our voices down." He placed her legs on his lap and leaned closer, studying her face. "That slap from Calla, does it still hurt?"

Elizabeth touched her left cheek and looked down. "Just a little."

Michael could still see some swelling on her face. It was clear that Calla had hit her with full force and hatred.

He wrapped his left arm around her shoulders, pulling her into his embrace, and gently stroked her face with his right hand. His voice was soft. "If anything like this happens again, tell me. I'll handle it for you."

Elizabeth, unaccustomed to his tenderness, tried to pull her legs away, but Michael wouldn't let her. He pulled her onto his lap.

She pushed him away. "Michael! What are you doing?"

Michael held her close and whispered, "Elizabeth, I need to ask you something."

Elizabeth looked up at him, and he was staring back at her.

In such an intimate position, with such a serious expression, Elizabeth felt flustered.

Her face turned a bit red, and her voice softened. "What is it?"

Michael hesitated, choosing his words carefully. "I just came from the hospital. Calla's eyes are in bad shape. I went to see her."

He saw the color drain from Elizabeth's face, turning cold.

She straightened up in his arms. "Shouldn't Anthony be with her? Why are you, her ex-boyfriend, so concerned? Visiting her?"

She thought to herself, 'You probably don't even know she cheated on you back then.'

Michael continued, "Elizabeth, tell me, where were you this afternoon?"

Elizabeth avoided his gaze, her tone icy. "That's my business, not yours."

Michael turned her face towards him. "Did you go to the Thomas Mansion this afternoon?"

Elizabeth glared at him. "Michael, if you've lost your mind, go see a doctor. Don't come to me with your nonsense. What's so special about the Thomas Mansion that I'd keep going there? I'd have to be crazy to do that!"

Michael had considered that Elizabeth, being pregnant, wouldn't go looking for Anthony. Based on what he knew about her, she wouldn't do something like that.

But Calla had been so adamant, and it didn't seem like she was lying. Who would risk their eyesight to frame someone? It was too far-fetched.

His voice was hoarse, and he hesitated. "But Calla said you went to the Thomas Mansion this afternoon and blinded her."

Elizabeth pushed Michael's hand away and stood barefoot on the carpet, her face cold as she laughed. "So what? You came here to question me because of her? You'd rather believe your ex-girlfriend than me, right?"

She laughed bitterly, her face resolute. "Of course, she's your ex-girlfriend. And me? I'm just an ex-wife. How could I be any better than her?"
