Chapter 425 Michael, You Broke My Heart
Sarah. [Elizabeth, you're the best. I heard about the upheaval in the Taylor family, and I was honestly happy about it. But then Margaret ended up winning, and that bummed me out again.]
Sarah. [Elizabeth, I saw Margaret. Her face is messed up, and she always wears a mask, walking with her head down. Isn't this karma for all the bad stuff she's done? It makes me feel better. At least I'm not like her. I can stand in the sunlight, laugh out loud when I want to, and not care about others' weird looks.]
Dean, sitting in the driver's seat, turned to look at Elizabeth. "Weren't you really tired? Why aren't you sleeping? Who are you chatting with so intensely?"
"Sarah. She went to the wedding but left when she didn't see the main characters."
Dean turned the steering wheel. "Elizabeth, you know Michael was forced into this. He never intended to actually marry Margaret. They teamed up to put on a show to fool Samuel. So, technically, he didn't betray you, right? Can you forgive him?"
Elizabeth turned to him in disbelief. "Dean, have you been swayed by him? Why are you suddenly speaking for him? What did he offer you? Did Daniel tell you to say this? God, who promised me that dating Daniel wouldn't affect his judgment or change his stance?"
The traffic light turned red.
Dean stopped the car. "Okay, okay. Elizabeth, I was wrong. Please, let it go."
Elizabeth's mouth turned down. "Whatever play he was putting on, it was for his own benefit. He never considered my feelings or the kids'. We always have to sacrifice for his interests. I've seen it clearly now."
Dean quickly tried to comfort her. "Alright, Elizabeth, let's not talk about him. Let's not discuss this depressing topic. Aren't you tired? Take a nap. I'll wake you when we get to the restaurant."
At the Thomas Villa in Aurora Bay, Celestria.
Michael sat on the couch, motionless.
Clio noticed he'd been staring at the burning fireplace for a long time and couldn't help but ask, "Mr. Thomas, is there something wrong with the fireplace?"
Michael snapped out of it and shook his head. "No, Clio. Do you remember my father?"
Clio's face changed. "Mr. Thomas, why are you suddenly thinking about him? Did something happen?"
"I burned his funeral video at the Taylor family's place."
Clio was relieved. "Mr. Thomas, it's good that you burned it. It shouldn't have been kept. Keeping it would only make you unhappy. It was a shackle that should have been destroyed long ago."
Michael was lost in self-doubt. "Clio, do you think I'm like him?"
Clio moved closer. "Mr. Thomas, don't compare yourself to him. You are you. He was a monster. He almost destroyed you and Eloise. That wasn't your fault. Don't dwell on it."
Michael's eyes remained vacant. "But so many people say I'm ruthless and cruel."
"Mr. Thomas, that's because those people provoked you first. Their goal was to kill you. If you showed them mercy, you'd be giving them another chance to kill you. Don't let their nonsense affect your thoughts."
Michael looked up, slightly relieved. "Thank you, Clio."
The doorbell rang.
Clio walked to the door. "It's Mr. Anderson."
Michael adjusted his posture. "Let him in."
Matthew walked in. "Michael, have you heard? Samuel's dead. Margaret killed him. The Taylor family is saying he died from a penicillin allergy after drinking. I never thought Margaret could be so ruthless. I'm so glad she didn't fall for me. If I had married her... no, I can't even think about it. She's terrifying."
Michael picked up his coffee cup. "I know. I had him killed."
Matthew was shocked. "What?"
"I told Margaret that she and Samuel owed me a life. Since she helped me get my stuff back, I gave her a choice. her life or Samuel's. She chose Samuel."
Matthew looked at him. "Michael, are you thinking about going to Valoria to find Elizabeth?"
Michael didn't respond, just glanced at him.
Matthew awkwardly said, "Michael, you don't have to look at me like that. You know you hurt Elizabeth deeply this time. She's probably still mad at you. If you go now, you'll just be a target for her anger."
He continued, "It's better to wait. Nolan and Pearl will be starting school soon, and she'll definitely come back with them. Then you can visit her with a good attitude."
Michael shook his head. "Matthew, have you ever wondered why you can't get a girlfriend?"
Matthew glared. "I have plenty of women around me! Do I look like I'm lacking?"
Michael got serious. "I'm talking about a real partner. Those women around you, are they one-night stands or mistresses? Do you know how much they really care about you? With your emotional intelligence, you're giving me advice? Who was it that insisted I break up with Elizabeth? Have you forgotten so quickly? Do you need me to remind you?"
Matthew was embarrassed. "Alright, Michael, stop teasing me. I'm just worried about you."
He added, "I just think that if you make her angry, you should make it up to her as soon as possible. The sooner, the better. The longer you wait, the harder it will be to resolve the conflict."
"Wait, so you're saying you want to go to Valoria right away to find Elizabeth?"
Michael lit a cigarette and exhaled a smoke ring. "That's the plan."
Matthew held his head. "Dating is such a hassle."
Michael scoffed. "You wish you had someone to date."
Matthew clutched his chest, pretending to be hurt. "Michael, you broke my heart."
"Alright, stop acting. Go back to work. I'll contact Dean and see when the kids are coming back."
Valoria.
In the neurosurgery ward of the hospital.
Quinn was awake. Elizabeth sat by his bed, watching him gently.
"Mr. Reed, hello. I'm Elizabeth, the surgeon who operated on you. You've just had surgery, so if you feel any discomfort, please tell me or press the call button for a nurse."
Quinn didn't speak, just looked at her quietly.
His head was wrapped in bandages, and his face looked even more like Eloise's.
Elizabeth looked at his face, feeling a mix of emotions. She had performed two surgeries on Eloise but never stayed with her afterward or properly introduced herself.
Eloise had always believed it was Elizabeth who operated on her, but Elizabeth never dared to admit it.
She owed Eloise an explanation, a comfort.
She wished she could turn back time. She would wait for Eloise to wake up after the surgery and then smile and say, "Eloise, hello, I'm your surgeon, Elizabeth."
