Chapter 10: Tokens of Love
Aurora saw a bald man lying on the ground, motionless. Under the distant streetlight, she could see bloodstains on the ground.
'Could he be dead? Was it not a fight but a murder?' she wondered.
Aurora thought to herself that things were looking bad. Quick-witted, she smiled and said, "You guys carry on. We are just passing by. I didn't see anything."
Saying this, Aurora supported Sophia and tried to leave. After taking a few steps, she saw a pair of men's dress shoes in her path.
Aurora's palms were sweaty with nervousness as she mustered her courage and looked up.
The man in front of her stood against the light, dressed in a suit, as if he had come from hell, exuding a murderous aura.
When Aurora's gaze fell on the man's face, she was startled.
The man was wearing a Grim Reaper mask, truly like a Grim Reaper from hell.
Under the mask, John furrowed his brows.
He didn't expect to encounter Aurora here.
The bald man on the ground suddenly "came to life," crawling towards the masked man with difficulty and pleading, "Boss, I won't dare again. Please spare me this time. I was confused and betrayed you."
"Boss, how should we deal with this traitor?" Sam kicked the man kneeling on the ground. He was also wearing a mask, with a ghost design on it.
Everyone else was wearing the same mask.
Aurora suddenly remembered something Sophia had mentioned before, about a group called the Nightfall Syndicate.
They had risen rapidly in recent years, but no one knew exactly what they did. It was a mysterious and feared organization.
Everyone in it wore masks and acted strangely and low-key, and no one even knew where the Nightfall Syndicate's headquarters were.
No one had seen them, but everyone knew of the Nightfall Syndicate.
As for their leader, no one had seen his real face or knew any real information about him, only a codename: Grim Reaper.
'Could I really be this out of luck to have run into the Nightfall Syndicate?' Aurora thought.
And the man in front of her wearing the Grim Reaper mask was probably the leader of the Nightfall Syndicate.
"Deal with him according to the rules," John said lightly, almost like he was just talking about the weather.
John deliberately altered his voice, so Aurora didn't recognize him. Little did she know the man in front of her was her boyfriend.
"Boss, spare me. I won't dare again, boss..."
The bald man was directly thrown into a nearby car and taken away, his pitiful pleas gradually fading.
Aurora swallowed subconsciously. The rumors about the Nightfall Syndicate's leader being brutally violent were true.
Sam glanced at Aurora and the unconscious Sophia, "Boss, what should we do with these two?"
Upon hearing this, Aurora quickly lowered her head, "We really were just passing by. We didn't see anything. Don't worry, I won't say anything."
Sam said, "Only dead people don't speak."
"Just consider us dead."
Aurora's survival instinct was strong.
The atmosphere was deathly silent.
Aurora wished she could kick this talkative man. Why was he making things difficult for her?
Aurora pondered her chances of escape.
Seeing that the scar-faced man hadn't spoken for a while, Aurora glanced at him from the corner of her eye and met John's gaze.
Those eyes were too cold and intimidating, like ice on the peak of a snow-capped mountain, with a chilling glint.
It made her feel as if she were on pins and needles.
The surrounding air suddenly dropped.
Aurora's heart tightened, and she quickly looked away.
Just as she was thinking about how to escape, she heard the masked man cough a few times and calmly ordered, "Let them go."
Aurora felt as if she had been granted amnesty, "Thank you."
She didn't dare delay for a moment, quickly leading Sophia away, fearing the other party would change their mind.
Sam asked, "Boss, are you really letting them go?"
John took off his mask, looking in the direction Aurora left, and smiled, "Find two people to escort them back."
Sam was even more confused, looking as if he had misheard.
'Since when did the Nightfall Syndicate become protectors and the boss become tender-hearted?' he thought.
John glanced at Sam, and Sam immediately said, "Boss, I'll go right away."
Aurora returned to her apartment, placed Sophia on the couch, poured herself a glass of water to calm her nerves, and patted her chest.
"Water."
Sophia called out thirstily.
Aurora quickly poured another glass and brought it to Sophia's lips.
"Why did you drink so much?"
Sophia fell asleep after drinking the water.
Aurora got a blanket and covered Sophia.
After a night of turmoil, Aurora was very tired and fell asleep as soon as she hit the bed.
That night, she had a dream where John turned into the Grim Reaper, coming to take her life.
Aurora struggled awake from the dream.
It was already morning. The sunlight streaming through the window gave her a sense of surrealism.
It was just a dream.
It was really scary.
Why would she have such a dream?
Aurora wiped the cold sweat from her forehead.
"Aurora, why am I at your place?" Sophia woke up, her head aching from drinking too much.
"Let's see if you dare to drink so much next time." Aurora got up and made Sophia a glass of honey water, "Drink this."
"Aurora, you're the best." Sophia said playfully, linking her arm with Aurora's, "Thanks for last night."
"What happened last night?" Aurora asked as she walked to the kitchen.
Sophia wasn't one to get so drunk.
"That jerk Andrew set me up." Sophia said angrily, "I'm going to confront him later. That Leo Robinson is notorious for being a womanizer, and he had the nerve to throw me into the fire. Luckily, I held on until you came, otherwise, I would have lost my dignity."
Andrew was Sophia's half-brother.
In wealthy families, having a few illegitimate children was too common.
Aurora rolled her eyes at Sophia and teased, "Did your P.E. teacher teach you English? Losing your dignity, really?"
"That's the gist of it. If I see Leo again, I'll break his leg." Sophia rolled up her sleeves, ready to fight, "By the way, how did you get away last night?"
Sophia had blacked out and didn't remember what happened next.
"I kicked Leo." Aurora said briefly, not mentioning what happened afterward.
Sophia's face changed, "Leo is known for holding grudges. He won't let this go."
"I'm not afraid." Aurora shrugged indifferently, her eyes flashing with cold light, "If he's not afraid to die, he can come again."
Sophia looked at Aurora, feeling gratified, "The Aurora I know is back. You should have broken up with Daniel earlier. I never liked him. Daniel and Emily are a better match."
Aurora made two bowls of pasta. Sophia was so hungry that she finished it in a few bites.
Just after finishing, Sophia received a call and started cursing, "Andrew, just you wait. I'm coming over right now."
Sophia was a hot-tempered person.
Aurora chuckled, changed her clothes, tied her hair, and went downstairs.
Aurora heard a car horn and looked back.
It was John sitting in the car.
He really came to pick her up.
John got out of the car and opened the door for Aurora like a gentleman, "Did you sleep well last night?"
"Not bad." Aurora got in. She certainly wouldn't say she had nightmares all night.
The car started.
During the morning rush hour, the traffic was heavy. They spoke little, but the silence wasn't awkward.
At the company entrance, as she was getting out, John grabbed her hand, "Wait a minute."
"What's wrong?" Aurora asked, puzzled.
"I have something for you." John took out a gift he had prepared from the back seat, "Open it and see if you like it."
Aurora was surprised, "Why are you giving me a gift all of a sudden? Is today something special?"
John looked at her lovingly, "A token of our love."
These words made Aurora's heart skip a beat.
