Chapter 441 Lori Only Has Three Months Left
A young girl with a kid this big? You don't see that every day.
The crowd around them grew larger.
Todd was scared and hid behind Lori, whispering timidly, "I'm scared, scared."
Someone in the crowd noticed Todd's condition and mocked, "Oh, he's a simpleton."
"Such a handsome guy, what a waste."
"He's still got a pacifier around his neck, hasn't even weaned yet."
"Looks like he's really out of it."
Everyone kept calling Todd a simpleton, and Lori got angry. "You're the simpletons! Say it one more time, and don't blame me if my fists find your faces."
Seeing her anger, the crowd fell silent.
Lori grabbed Todd's hand and started to leave. "Come on, let's go home."
"I want to play with them. I want to play," Todd protested, reluctant to leave after just getting comfortable with the other kids.
Lori snapped, "Play? They're calling you a simpleton!"
"You're so mean."
Todd started crying and squatted down, refusing to move. "I'm not leaving, not leaving."
Lori was frustrated. In the past, she would have just smacked him, but Todd had become simple-minded after being struck by lightning while saving her.
Suppressing her anger, Lori crouched down, smiled, and spoke softly, "Todd, be good. I'm not mad at you. I'll take you to a really fun place..."
She glanced at an advertisement nearby for an aquarium.
"I'll take you to the aquarium, okay? There are lots of fun things there."
It was the first time Lori had spoken so gently, and it even gave her goosebumps.
"The aquarium?" Todd asked, confused but curious, clapping his hands excitedly. "Yes, yes, let's go to the aquarium."
Lori hailed a cab and took Todd to the aquarium.
Since it wasn't the weekend, the aquarium wasn't crowded, and they didn't have to wait in line for tickets.
Lori had always found aquariums boring. What was there to see in those fish tanks? She had dived into the ocean countless times and seen everything.
Todd was thrilled by the fish, dragging Lori around to see everything.
There was a performance in a huge tank where long-haired women dressed as mermaids danced, surrounded by colorful fish. It was a beautiful scene.
"Wow, mermaids! So pretty," Todd exclaimed, pressing his face against the glass.
Lori scoffed, "You don't seem so simple-minded when you see pretty girls."
Though uninterested, Lori patiently stayed with Todd.
Todd asked excitedly, "Do you like mermaids, fairy?"
Lori, lacking enthusiasm, replied, "Sure."
"Which one do you like?" Todd asked, eyes fixed on the mermaids.
Lori took a closer look and said, "They all look fine."
"Do you like them fried or grilled?"
Lori was puzzled.
This conversation was completely off-track.
Todd looked like he was drooling, as if he saw something delicious.
Lori felt like the real simpleton.
She spent the whole day with Todd, feeling like she was forced to entertain him.
For example, Todd wanted to ride the pirate ship at the amusement park. Lori complained, "That's childish. I'm not going."
"Please, please!"
A few minutes later, they were on the pirate ship, with Todd clapping and screaming in excitement.
Lori, expressionless, pretended to be scared, "Oh, I'm so scared."
Another time, Todd wanted to go to the haunted house. Lori scoffed, "That's kid stuff. Not interested."
"Please, please."
A few minutes later, they bought tickets and entered the haunted house. Todd was terrified, screaming the whole way, making Lori's ears ring.
When a headless ghost jumped out, Todd leaped onto Lori, clinging to her neck. "Fairy, I'm scared."
Lori was silent.
A few minutes later, Lori walked out of the haunted house, expressionless, with Todd clinging to her like a kangaroo.
People stared, amazed at how men looked like women and women looked like men these days.
Lori was used to the strange looks and didn't care.
Todd quickly forgot about the haunted house and pointed at the roller coaster. "Fairy, I want to ride, I want to ride."
Lori rolled her eyes. "I'm afraid you'll wet your pants."
"Fairy, please, I want to ride." Todd looked like he would cry if he didn't get to ride.
Lori gave in. "Fine, let's go."
A few minutes later, they were on the roller coaster. Lori couldn't muster any excitement; it was all too childish.
Surrounded by the screams of other riders, Lori looked like she had lost all hope, stuffing cotton in her ears.
Todd screamed with his eyes covered, and when the ride was over, he threw up.
After a whole day of activities, Lori felt exhausted and took Todd back to the hospital.
Aurora arrived with some food, looking for Lori and Todd. She was about to call Lori when she saw them return, both looking tired.
Todd was almost asleep, his head resting on Lori's shoulder, eyes barely open.
Aurora asked in surprise, "Where have you two been? You look exhausted."
Lori replied casually, "Just taking my son out."
Taking her son out?
Aurora looked at Todd, who still had a pacifier in his mouth, and understood.
Todd being struck by lightning and becoming simple-minded was sad, but seeing their interactions, it was hard to feel sad.
Todd, struggling to keep his eyes open, said, "Fairy, I'm hungry."
Lori asked expressionlessly, "Milk or food?"
Todd smiled brightly, "Milk."
"Sit on the bed, I'll make you some formula." Lori was slowly getting used to having a "son."
Todd obediently sat down, and Lori expertly mixed the formula, handing it to Todd. "Here, drink up."
Todd happily drank from the bottle and soon fell asleep.
Aurora was speechless.
Was this really happening?
Lori collapsed on the couch. "Aurora, what did you bring me? I'm starving."
"All your favorites." Aurora laid out the food she brought.
Lori, famished, started eating voraciously.
Aurora asked, "Where are Todd's parents?"
"They left him with me and took off." Lori complained, "Aurora, I've never seen parents so carefree. Aren't they worried I might run off with their son?"
Aurora laughed, "If you did, they'd probably be thrilled. They'd get a daughter-in-law for free."
Lori spat out her food. "Aurora, now that you mention it, this feels like a setup. What are they planning?"
"How should I know?" Aurora glanced at the sleeping Todd. "Now that Todd's simple-minded, you can't just leave him. If he stays like this forever, you'll be taking care of him for life."
Lori looked up and groaned, "God, strike me with lightning already."
"Stop groaning. I'll have Mr. Collins check you out."
Lori noticed the two dishes of beef liver on the table and understood Aurora's intention.
It was to replenish her blood, as she was going to have her blood drawn again.
"Aurora, if you keep drawing my blood, I might die from blood loss before Jack kills me."
"That's why you need to eat more beef liver." Aurora smiled. "Mr. Collins will come to draw your blood in an hour."
"Fine, draw away." Lori knew Aurora meant well.
An hour later, Gary came to draw Lori's blood, complaining, "Can't you give me a long vacation? I just had a few days off, and now I'm forced to work overtime again."
John, who came along, said, "We'll give you a raise."
Gary was satisfied. "That's more like it. I'll have the results in half an hour."
Lori had seen several doctors already, and none had found any issues. She didn't think there was a problem, so she had her blood drawn and went to rest, not giving it much thought.
Half an hour later, Aurora was called by Gary, who looked serious. "Aurora, Lori's health is in bad shape. She has a rare virus in her body. If we hadn't caught it in time, she would have died quietly within three months."
