Chapter 11: Verifying the Authenticity of the Bracelet
Aurora opened it and took a look. It was a bracelet with a heart-shaped pendant inlaid with sapphire.
Aurora couldn't help but exclaim, "It's so beautiful and must be expensive."
"It's not worth much, just a few hundred dollars. The gem is plastic," John said with a straight face, lying through his teeth.
Although Aurora was a wealthy heiress, she rarely came into contact with luxury goods. As long as she could fill her stomach and complete her studies, and Nicole didn't cause trouble, she was already grateful.
This bracelet, named "Heart of the Goddess", was worth $120,000. Aurora couldn't recognize it, and even if she did, she wouldn't believe it.
To her, John was just an ordinary poor guy and couldn't afford a few hundred thousand dollars.
Hearing it was only a few hundred bucks, Aurora felt a bit relieved. She was really afraid it was too expensive.
The value of a gift lies not in its price but in the thought behind it.
"So realistic. I thought it was a real gem," Aurora said sincerely. "It's very beautiful. I really like it. But I didn't prepare a gift for you."
John leaned slightly, his voice rich and deep in her ear, "I've already received your gift."
She wondered when she gave it.
"You are the best gift."
Aurora walked into the company, John's last words still echoing in her ears, her cheeks slightly flushed.
Aurora realized that John was really good at flirting.
Often, a casual word or gesture would make her heart skip a beat.
"Aurora, Aurora, what are you thinking? I've been calling you for ages," team leader Donna came over with a stack of documents. "Translate these before the end of the day. The higher-ups are waiting for them."
Aurora snapped back to reality, took the documents, and flipped through a few pages. "Okay, I'll have them ready by the end of the day."
Donna stared at Aurora's face. "Aurora, why is your face so red?"
"Huh?" Aurora touched her face, feeling a bit hot. She quickly said, "I ran up because I was almost late."
Donna suddenly lowered her voice and said, "Did you hear? Manager Green got the boss's daughter pregnant. He's about to become the boss's son-in-law and save himself twenty years of hard work."
Becoming the boss's son-in-law would save more than twenty years of hard work.
As they were talking, a woman with curly chestnut hair and a seductive figure walked in, heading straight for Manager Green's office.
Aurora glanced over. It was indeed the boss's daughter, Nancy.
Soon, the blinds in the manager's office were closed, and the door was shut.
Donna curled her lips in disdain. "These days, even men rely on women."
Aurora smiled but didn't comment.
After a busy day, it was finally time to get off work. Colleagues were packing up, getting ready to leave.
Aurora was also packing her things when Nancy suddenly came over. "My bracelet is missing. No one is allowed to leave until it's found."
As soon as she finished speaking, a bracelet fell out of Aurora's bag.
Everyone's eyes turned to Aurora, each with a different expression.
The bracelet was the token of love that John had given her.
Nancy's voice was sharp. "This is my bracelet. You thief. Joe, call the police and take this woman to the station."
For a moment, the company was abuzz with gossip.
Aurora usually didn't mingle with others much. Being beautiful, she was revered by the male colleagues as an ice queen, which made many female colleagues jealous.
Now that the ice queen was labeled a thief, many were gloating.
Aurora remained calm. "Miss Wilson, you're mistaken. This is my bracelet."
"Your bracelet?" Nancy sneered. "A bracelet worth hundreds of thousands of dollars, can you afford it? Now that the evidence is here, you still want to argue?"
'A bracelet worth hundreds of thousands of dollars?' Aurora murmured inwardly.
John had told her this bracelet was only a few hundred dollars.
Aurora was now even more certain that Nancy had made a mistake.
Facing her colleagues' whispers, Aurora remained composed and patiently explained, "Miss Wilson, this really is my bracelet. It's not worth hundreds of thousands of dollars. If you don't believe me, take a closer look."
"This is my bracelet," Nancy insisted. "This bracelet is called the Heart of the Goddess, designed by the famous French designer Roy Fields. It was a birthday gift from Joe a few days ago. There's only one in the world. You must have stolen it when we were in the restroom together."
Half an hour ago, Aurora had indeed gone to the restroom and ran into Nancy.
Nancy's firm accusation made the colleagues gossip even more, looking at Aurora with disdain.
"Who would have thought? She seemed decent, but turns out she's a thief."
"Yeah, our company has never had such an incident. Offending the boss's daughter, let's see how Aurora will stay in the company now."
"All those men praising her as the ice queen, but she's just a thief."
"Now we know her true colors. Let's see if those men will still praise her."
"My lipstick went missing the other day. I wonder who stole it."
These words were highly suggestive.
Seeing Aurora being scorned, Nancy smiled triumphantly. "Joe, call the police and take her to the station. And a thief has no place in my company. Aurora, you're fired."
Aurora remained unflustered. She hadn't stolen anything, so what was there to fear?
Just as Nancy was about to take the bracelet, Aurora suddenly grabbed her wrist, shocking everyone.
'What was Aurora going to do? Has she lost her mind and tried to start a fight?' they wondered.
Nancy was also surprised, staring coldly at Aurora's hand and sneering, "What? Begging for mercy? Too late."
Before Nancy could finish, Aurora snatched the bracelet back. "This is a gift from my boyfriend. No one can take it. Call the police and let them clear my name."
This was John's first gift to her. How could she let Nancy take it?
Nancy was also taken aback. "Caught red-handed and still arguing."
Donna chimed in, "Aurora doesn't seem like the type to steal. A bracelet worth hundreds of thousands, she'd be in jail for life. Miss Wilson, better let the police investigate to avoid wronging someone."
Hearing someone speak up for her, Aurora felt a warm sensation in her heart.
"Nancy, what's going on in your company? It's so chaotic."
Hearing that familiar voice, Aurora frowned.
The newcomer was none other than Emily.
With Emily was another woman Aurora hadn't seen before.
Nancy glared at Aurora. "This woman stole my bracelet. Caught red-handed and still arguing."
Aurora had never appeared in public as the White family's eldest daughter, and few knew that Emily and Aurora were half-sisters.
Emily glanced at Aurora, then at the bracelet in her hand, and said, "Isn't that the Heart of the Goddess? Worth $120,000, bought a few days ago. I wondered who it was and didn't expect it to be you, Nancy."
Nancy said angrily, "This Heart of the Goddess was a gift from Joe. This woman insists it's hers."
Aurora frowned. "This bracelet isn't yours, Miss Wilson. It was a gift from my boyfriend."
"Your poor boyfriend?" Emily laughed. "Can he afford it?"
Emily still thought John was a pauper. Last night, she had someone investigate, and it turned out the one who booked the venue was the heir of Smith Media Group.
Nancy asked, "Emily, do you know her?"
"Seen her before, not familiar," Emily said. "By the way, Andy, the assistant of the designer of the Heart of the Goddess, is with me. Let her check the bracelet. There's only one in the world. Verifying its authenticity will reveal the owner."
If the bracelet turned out to be fake, it would further prove that Aurora had a poor boyfriend. This alone would be enough for Emily to mock her for a lifetime.
