Chapter 178 Loren Jumped into the River
The whole town lit up like it was daytime, and alarms blared through the night, making everyone uneasy.
Lori's face got serious. "Someone set off the alarm."
"The sound's coming from the records room," Ava said. "Someone's in there."
Aurora didn't care who was in the records room; she just wanted to know where Loren was.
Almost everyone in town came rushing over. A few folks were carrying a stretcher with a soaking wet kid on it, about eight years old.
The boy's face was pale as a ghost, looking lifeless.
They set the stretcher down, and a woman clung to it, crying her eyes out. "Bobby, my son, wake up."
"Arrest that woman! She's the spy! She's the one who killed Bobby!" A young guy shouted, and everyone turned to Aurora, their eyes full of anger.
Aurora recognized him. He was the one she saw in the reeds that morning.
"Anyone who messes with Aurora deals with me," Lori said, standing protectively with Ava.
Aurora was pregnant and couldn't risk anything happening.
These people were fired up; if they hurt her, it would be bad news.
"It's the woman you brought back who stole the secret formula from the records room and killed Bobby. If she's not a corporate spy, what is she?" the young guy yelled. "Make her pay with her life."
"Pay with her life! Pay with her life!" Others joined in, shouting angrily.
Lori was furious. "Wayne, don't go throwing around false accusations. Aurora's been with us the whole time. She didn't steal any secret formula. She's one of us and has nothing to do with Nightfall. Stop making stuff up."
"Where's my son?" Aurora looked around but didn't see Loren, her heart pounding with worry. "Where's Loren?"
Wayne Allen sneered, "I saw that kid come out of the records room. I couldn't catch him, and he jumped into the river to escape. He's probably drowned by now."
"What?" Aurora's face went pale, and she almost fainted.
"Aurora," Lori said, holding her up. "You okay?"
Aurora shook her head, a fierce look in her eyes. She stepped forward, grabbed Wayne by the collar, and said angrily, "If anything happens to my son, I'll kill you."
Aurora's strength, driven by a mother's instinct, pinned Wayne down so he couldn't break free.
"He jumped in himself; I didn't push him. If he hadn't done something wrong, why would he run?"
After pulling away from Aurora, he shoved her hard and hid behind the crowd.
Lori supported Aurora. "Wayne, you wanna die?"
Aurora's actions had riled up the crowd, and dozens of people surrounded her.
"Aurora," Lori said, standing protectively in front of her.
"What do you all want to do?" Lori asked those people. If they weren't old members of Wolfpack, Lori would've already taken action.
"Everyone back off." Hank arrived quickly. "What's going on here? Everyone back off."
Wayne adjusted his clothes and said, "Bobcat, this woman is a spy. The kid she brought snuck into the records room and stole our secret formula. Bobby found out but was pushed into the water by that kid and drowned. That kid then jumped into the river. We can't let this woman go."
Bobby's mother was losing it. "Bobcat, my husband gave his life working for you, and now my son's dead too. He was my only child. You have to give me an explanation today. Kill this woman and make her pay for my son's life."
"My son is only five years old. How could he push an eight or nine-year-old into the water? He would never steal any secret formula. If anything happens to my son, I won't spare anyone here," Aurora's eyes were bloodshot, filled with rage. "I'll burn this place to the ground."
Aurora's fury was so intense, it made Hank and Lori's hearts skip a beat.
Even though Aurora was a weak woman with low combat skills, at this moment, Lori had no doubt she could destroy everything.
"Lori, grab that guy and make him show us where Loren jumped into the river. If we can't find Loren today, we'll use his life to pay for my son's." Aurora was shaking with anger, wanting to kill Wayne. But right now, finding Loren was the priority. She had to find him.
Wayne backed into the crowd, shouting, "She's gonna kill me to shut me up, Bobcat, you can't just stand there."
"Shut up." Lori grabbed Wayne. "Let's go. Where did Loren jump into the river? Take us there now."
Hank stepped forward. "Ms. White could never be a spy. She's one of us, a member of Wolfpack. The necklace she wears once belonged to Ms. Lee, a symbol of Lee family. I'm sure everyone recognizes it."
Everyone's eyes turned to the necklace around Aurora's neck. The pendant was indeed a symbol of Lee family.
With this necklace, she could freely enter and exit any place in Wolfpack, including the records room. How could she possibly steal anything?
Wayne recognized the token around Aurora's neck and felt a pang of guilt.
Plus, the idea of a five-year-old killing a nine-year-old was ridiculous.
Wayne's words had been one-sided, and Aurora's words made the others realize this.
Aurora couldn't have sent Loren to steal the secret formula, which meant Wayne was lying.
Bobby's mother suddenly grabbed Wayne, her emotions out of control. "How did my son die? Who killed him?"
"I, I don't know. It was my turn to be on duty today. I saw that kid sneaking out of the records room, and he tried to run, so I chased him." Wayne started to stammer, "When I turned back, I found Bobby's body by the river. I thought that kid killed Bobby. There are no other outsiders in this town besides them, so of course, I suspected them. How was I supposed to know Ms. White was from Lee family?"
"Enough talk, take me to where Loren had the accident," Aurora said sternly. "If anything happens to my son, I'll kill you first."
Wayne led everyone to the spot where Loren had jumped into the river. There were some bloodstains by the riverbank, the surface of the river calm.
"Loren." Seeing the bloodstains, Aurora almost fainted.
Lori said, "Aurora, don't worry. I'll have someone go into the river to search."
Hank ordered, "Everyone who can swim, jump in and search. We need to find him, dead or alive."
Aurora's ears echoed with those words, her whole body cold, as if her blood was flowing backward. She stared blankly at the river, crying out in agony, "Loren!"
