Chapter 170 John's Family Status Improved
Aurora and John were baffled.
Gary shot them a knowing look and joked, "Next time, keep it down. People with heart issues can't handle it."
Aurora felt a bit exasperated. What a misunderstanding. They hadn't done anything in the room.
John told Gary, "Let's get her back to her room first."
Gary quickly stepped back, saying, "You do it."
Gary was in his thirties and had always been single; he hadn't even held a woman's hand, except for female patients.
John put his hand on Aurora's shoulder. "I have a girlfriend; it's not appropriate."
Just as they kept passing the responsibility back and forth, Sam returned.
Both of them said in unison, "Sam, come here."
"Boss, Mr. Collins." Sam was a bit excited and hurried over.
Gary pointed to Jennifer on the ground. "Carry her into the room."
"Okay." Sam didn't even look at her face and just picked her up.
John said, "Second room on the left."
Sam replied, "Got it."
Sam carried her away.
Aurora said, "I'm going to rest."
After Aurora finished speaking, she closed the door before John could enter, and the wind from the closing door hit John's face, making Gary laugh.
John shot him a look. "Let's go to the study and play some chess. It's been a while."
Aurora was shy. Since she had just been teased by Gary, she didn't dare let John into the room.
What if Jennifer passed out from anger again?
John couldn't get into the room, so he had to call Gary along.
In the study, they set up the chessboard.
Gary said, "If you have something to say, just ask."
From the moment John suggested playing chess, Gary knew John had something on his mind.
John's brows furrowed. "Does Jennifer really have a heart condition?"
"From the examination just now, it seems so. She must have had a heart transplant not long ago." Gary said, "Even if the surgery was successful, her body would be much weaker. Her fainting is the best proof."
John fell silent.
Gary asked, "How did she come back alive? Haven't you investigated where Jennifer has been all these years?"
"That's why I brought you here." John said, "I had the information department look into it, but they found nothing."
John didn't care, but that didn't mean he wanted to be a fool.
Shocked, Gary's expression became serious. "How is that possible? If she's alive, there should be traces. The information department is full of top-notch experts. How could they not find anything?"
John snorted, "Erasing all traces isn't impossible."
"Then where has she been all these years?" Gary frowned. "Could she really have come back from the dead?"
"Have you seen Todd?" John asked.
Gary and Todd had asked the same question.
Gary was puzzled. "No."
John placed a chess piece. "Just keep an eye out. Tomorrow, you and Summer head back to the island first and take my mom there for recuperation."
"Summer has been off the island for a long time; it can't be delayed." Gary said, "The environment on the island will help Helen's condition. Has Ms. White agreed to Summer returning to the island?"
John said proudly, "I don't need to ask her about this; I make the decisions."
It seemed someone had forgotten how he had just asked Aurora for permission.
Gary laughed, "Your family status has improved quite a bit."
"Of course. Ordinarily, I just let her have her way. For big decisions, I have to take charge."
Before John could finish, Gary glanced at the door and asked mischievously, "John, who really calls the shots at your place?"
"Isn't it obvious? I handle the big stuff, she handles the small stuff," John said, then quickly added, "But she decides what's big and small."
"So basically, Aurora makes all the decisions? John, where's your manly authority?"
"Aurora is understanding and gentle. Only under her leadership is our family harmonious. Showing off in front of a woman isn't manly," John turned and smiled at Aurora. "Sweetheart, when did you get here?"
Gary wanted to mock John for pretending, knowing he had already noticed Aurora's arrival, and though he expected a "bloody" confrontation, John ultimately outsmarted and defused the situation.
Aurora smiled sweetly, "I brought you guys some snacks. Take your time with the chess; I'm going to rest."
"You're the best, sweetheart." John smiled as he took the snacks, secretly relieved.
That was close. If he hadn't reacted quickly, the snacks would have ended up on his head. Luckily, he was quick-witted.
"It's my pleasure." Aurora smiled. "Mr. Collins, you should eat too. I won't disturb you."
Aurora thoughtfully closed the door.
Gary said, "Impressive."
John smugly ate the snacks, showing off. "Learn from this."
Jennifer had already woken up. Knowing John and Gary were playing chess in the study made her feel better. Just then, her phone rang. She glanced at the caller ID and cautiously walked into the bathroom. She turned on the faucet and masked by the flow of water before answering.
"Have you found out who targeted John?" Jennifer asked.
"Yes, it was Richard's niece, Lori," the person on the other end said. "Jennifer, you should come back. It's too dangerous for you to stay by John's side. If he discovers your identity, you'll be in danger."
It was Lori again.
Jennifer's voice turned stern, "It's not your place to interfere with my affairs."
"Yes." The voice on the other end became respectful.
Thinking of how Lori had thrown her around, Jennifer's eyes filled with hatred. With a shift in her mind, she said, "By the way, anonymously hire someone to kill a woman for me. Just hire that Lori, offer her a high price."
"Ms. Johnson, why not use our own people? Hiring outsiders would make us look like the Shadow of Darkness organization is incompetent."
"That's why I said to do it anonymously, you idiot. Just do as I say," Jennifer said, her chest hurting with anger. "That's an order."
"Yes."
After hanging up, Jennifer took another dose of medication to calm down.
That night, probably due to the alcohol, Aurora slept well and woke up refreshed.
As soon as she woke up, she received a call from Lori.
Lori whistled excitedly over the phone. "Aurora, someone offered ten million dollars to have me kill you."
Aurora was furious, "My life is only worth that much?"
Lori thought, 'Aurora, that is not the point. The point is that someone wants to kill you.'
Okay, actually, when Lori first got the job, she had the same reaction. The money was too little, so she excitedly called Aurora.
"The initial offer was five million dollars, but I thought it was too little and got it raised to ten million," Lori said. "Don't worry, Aurora. I won't take the job for less than fifty million."
Aurora calmly reminded her, "Lori, I'm your cousin."
Lori laughed over the phone. "I'll take the money anyway. I have a bad reputation in the circle for taking money and not doing the job. No one can do anything about it."
