Chapter 409 The Normal Woman's Thought Process
Todd stroked his chin thoughtfully. "The Ironclad Union probably just wanted to use Jack to steal the island's map. Then they could sneak onto the island, steal our Nightfall secrets, and maybe even take us out in one go. John was prepared and had two plans ready. After dealing with the Ironclad Union and the Lion's people, it's possible that the Ironclad Union's leader, Black Hawk, got so mad that he decided Jack was useless and killed him."
Todd felt pretty confident in his theory and snapped his fingers. "That must be it. Man, I'm a genius."
Gary nodded in agreement and looked at Summer. "Is that what your dad thinks, too?"
Summer had a pensive look on her face. "Dad says I'm better at this than he is. Anyway, if my uncle got into trouble, he was likely silenced."
"Then why didn't your dad explain things to your mom instead of picking a fight with her?" Gary asked.
"Men, you know, they have their off days," Summer waved her hand dismissively. "You guys don't need to worry too much. Maybe Dad's trying to assert his position in the family? Mom couldn't handle the news about my uncle, and Dad couldn't handle Mom's distrust. A little friction is normal."
Gary and Todd exchanged a look of admiration for Summer's attitude.
"So, should we head back and get some sleep?" Gary suggested.
Todd quickly distanced himself. "Who said anything about sleeping together? Each to his own bed, don't tarnish my reputation."
Gary was puzzled.
Gary smirked. "Is that supposed to be a joke? You, who got knocked down by a woman, are talking about reputation? By the way, you still haven't made it official?"
Todd turned his head away in silence.
What a jerk. Always hitting where it hurt.
...
Back on the mainland, Aurora, Lori, and Ava couldn't head straight back to Silvercrest City in the middle of the night. They had to find a nearby motel to stay in.
Lori and Ava were worried about Aurora, so the three of them shared a room.
Aurora hadn't said a word since they left the island, her face expressionless. No one knew what she was thinking.
Lori and Ava exchanged glances, silently debating how to comfort her.
Ava: 'You go.'
Lori: 'You go. I'm too scared.'
Ava: 'If you're scared, I'm even more scared.'
Lori: 'Aren't we best friends?'
Ava: 'She's your cousin. You should go.'
As they made faces at each other, Aurora suddenly spoke up. "What are you two whispering about?"
Lori gave an awkward smile. "Aurora, Ava's eyes are bothering her, so I was checking them. By the way, are you feeling any better? What happened with John? Why are you talking about divorce? And Jack..."
"In that situation, Jack had no chance of surviving." Aurora hugged her knees. "John had suspected Jack for a while. I knew Jack was up to something too. I tried to mediate, but I couldn't stop the tragedy. That was Jack. How could John kill him?"
Lori was confused about Jack being a problem.
"Aurora, what do you mean? I understand each word you're saying, but together, they don't make sense."
"Lion and Ironclad Union were brought here by Jack. He stole the map. He had a purpose for coming to the island," Aurora said, closing her eyes in pain.
Lori processed Aurora's words, finding it hard to believe. "Are you saying Jack was still in contact with the Wolfpack? What was he trying to do? Is he crazy? Was he seeking revenge for that guy? That guy got what he deserved. Why would Jack get involved? Is he out of his mind?"
Lori got more and more agitated. "Aurora, maybe we should go back and talk to John. Given your relationship, he wouldn't have hurt Jack on purpose."
Aurora looked despondent. "He yelled at me."
Lori got even more emotional. "Aurora, something's definitely off tonight. That bastard Christopher might be fish food by now. If he's not dead, I'll drag him back and get some answers."
Aurora repeated, "He yelled at me."
Lori continued, "Aurora, maybe John was just angry. Maybe he didn't mean to hurt Jack. Let's get to the bottom of this."
Aurora looked at Lori. "He yelled at me."
Lori fell silent.
Lori wanted to bang her head against the wall. Aurora wasn't upset about John hurting Jack; she was upset that he yelled at her.
That was how women thought after a fight.
Men fight like firecrackers—one sparked, and it was over.
But women fight like mosquito coils—round and round, with lingering heat.
And often, they were not even on the same page, holding onto different issues.
