Chapter 222 Aurora Goes Home Alone
Thinking back, Jennifer suddenly realized Aurora had played her. Aurora had known she was pregnant but told Jennifer it was just irregular periods, and even John had helped keep it under wraps. From that point on, they treated her like an outsider.
Jennifer clenched her fists, a flash of anger in her eyes. Quietly, she approached John's hospital room and heard laughter inside, which made her even more jealous. John, once the golden boy, was now blind. He had ended up like this for a woman, yet he could still laugh.
Aurora held John's hand and placed it on her belly. John's face showed rare caution and anticipation. That gentle look almost drove Jennifer crazy. John had never looked at her like that.
Inside, Aurora said, looking forward to the twins. "You can't feel anything now, but in two months, my belly will start to show."
"Aurora." John grabbed her hand and patted the bed. "Come up here. I couldn't sleep at all last night without you."
Though he was in his thirties, his tone carried a hint of whining, which Aurora found irresistible.
She scoffed, "How old are you? You're not Summer or Loren. Even Loren can sleep alone now."
Despite her words, Aurora got on the bed and leaned against the headboard.
Using his sense of touch, John lay down on Aurora's lap and wrapped his arms around her waist. "A baby of over four hundred months is still a baby."
Aurora felt a bit speechless. "Oh my God, John, you're so shameless," she exclaimed, her eyes wide with mock indignation. "I think I should close the door so no one sees this. It's so embarrassing."
"Lying in my wife's arms, why would I be embarrassed?" John held on tight. "Aurora, let's go back to Silvercrest City tomorrow. Once my eyes are healed, we'll get married."
They could delay the wedding, but the marriage certificate needed to be done quickly. Otherwise, with Aurora's temper, she could break up at any moment. With legal protection, even if they wanted a divorce, there would be a cooling-off period.
John felt it was too difficult for him. For others, the woman wanted to tie the man down with a marriage certificate, but for him, it was the opposite.
Aurora pondered and said, "John, I feel like you didn't sleep last night because you were thinking about how to tie me down, right?"
John sighed and sat up with a dejected look. "I'm blind now. If the surgery fails, I'll be blind for life. You're healthy and have many suitors. If you don't want to spend your life with a blind man, I understand."
"Can you stop being so shameless and using the pity card?" Aurora thought back to when she first met John. She was deceived by his pitiful tone like this.
John silently turned his back, looking pitiful.
Aurora could only comfort him, "Alright, I didn't say we wouldn't get married. We'll do it as soon as we get back."
Hearing this, John smiled slyly.
With Aurora's words, John almost couldn't wait to return to Silvercrest City and have Gary arrange the surgery.
In the afternoon, John had another check-up. The doctor's advice was to stay a few more days, shattering his wish to be discharged early.
Aurora stayed with John at the hospital for a day. Later, when she heard Jack had returned, she left John with Summer and Todd and went back to Wolfpack.
Aurora stepped into the hall and was thrilled to see Jack. "Jack."
"Aurora." Jack was also visibly excited.
After months apart, Jack had really changed. He used to be super skinny, but now, after all that training, he was looking strong and full of energy. Aurora was pretty happy with his transformation.
Richard, standing nearby, chimed in, "It's rare for the whole family to be together today. Let's have dinner tonight. I'll call Lori back."
With that, Richard went to make a call.
Aurora still didn't get what Richard meant by "the family" and why Jack was connected to Wolfpack. Her mom had brought Jack back at a later time. Lori had said Jack's real name was Jack Thomas, which had nothing to do with the Lee family.
Even Jack himself didn't know his background. Richard only said his name was Jack Thomas and nothing more. But as long as Richard didn't harm Jack, Aurora didn't worry too much about it.
Before dinner, Aurora and Jack sat down to chat. Jack suddenly remembered something and said, "Aurora, the redwood box you gave me, the one left by our mom, I gave it to a nurse at the hospital for safekeeping. Remember to get it when you go back to Silvercrest City."
If Jack hadn't mentioned it, Aurora would have totally forgotten. With everything going on lately and Jack being taken away in a hurry, she hadn't had time to take care of their mom's stuff.
"Okay." Aurora nodded. "Aren't you coming back with me?"
Jack shook his head. "Wolfpack needs me. Christopher and Robert haven't given up yet."
"Got it," Aurora said. She couldn't stay here forever and had to hand over Wolfpack's affairs. "Jack, you've grown up a lot."
It was almost dinner time, and Lori still didn't show up. Later, she called, saying she couldn't make it. She had taken a mission and was heading to a neighboring city with Ava.
Richard frowned. "She's always so reckless and uncontrollable. I wonder which man would dare to marry her in the future."
He was worried that Lori's personality would make it hard for her to get married.
Aurora laughed, "Lori isn't like those high society women who only know how to be jealous and compete with each other. She's a soaring eagle, passionate like fire. Ordinary people can't match her."
"I think she's more like a wild colt,, always running free and giving me a headache,"said Richard with a sigh, though there was a hint of fondness in his voice.
Without waiting for Lori, Richard had the servants serve dinner.
Just as they sat down, an unexpected guest arrived. "Godfather, having dinner?" Christopher came in with a bunch of gifts. "Your health hasn't fully recovered, why did you leave the hospital?"
Seeing Christopher, Richard's face darkened. "What, are you hoping I'd die? How did I end up adopting such an ungrateful person like you?"
"Richard, how can you say that? I've always wished you good health." Christopher smiled and sat down without permission. "Today's meal looks great. I came at just the right time."
Aurora sat quietly, observing Christopher. Today, Christopher seemed different from his usual impulsive and irritable self; he had learned to flatter. Was this a peace offering?
Surprisingly, Richard didn't chase Christopher away, and even more surprisingly, he had the servants prepare a set of utensils for Christopher, showing a sternness mixed with a hint of affection.
Aurora couldn't understand it, but she decided not to dwell on it.
Throughout the meal, Christopher remained unusually quiet, focusing on his food and avoiding any trouble. After dinner, Aurora didn't stay long and left. Jack offered to see her off, but Richard called him and Christopher to the study, so Aurora went to get a cab by herself.
This was a villa area, making it hard to get a cab. Aurora had to walk a bit. As she walked out of the villa area and tried to hail a cab by the roadside, she felt that Richard had been acting weird tonight. But before she could figure it out, a figure appeared under the streetlight.
