Chapter 211 The Big Reversal
Alexander's question made Aurora feel a bit uneasy right away. "Why are you asking this? Are you my real dad or something? Please, no. I really don't want two more half-sisters; I'm not up for that."
Emily had already caused enough trouble for Aurora. So, it was natural for Aurora to think this way. Plus, all those TV dramas she watched always had these kinds of twists.
Alexander had been pretty excited, but hearing Aurora's words, he suddenly didn't know what to say. "I'm just asking."
Aurora patted her chest and let out a sigh of relief. "You scared me. If you want to ask something, just ask. Don't make it so dramatic. I'm twenty-five, born in December."
"Twenty-five, born in December," Alexander repeated, then turned to stare at a vase like he was lost in some memory. He muttered, "Her temperament is still so stubborn."
"My mom?" Aurora got curious. "Mr. Johnson, do you like my mom?"
Hearing this, Alexander suddenly jumped up like he'd been stung. "Who likes her? I can have any woman I want. Why would I like that self-righteous woman? What a joke."
Alexander's voice was loud. Aurora rubbed her ears and rolled her eyes. "Okay, okay, you don't like her. I was just asking. My mom is beautiful, gentle, and smart. If you think she's self-righteous, then you must be blind." She wasn't happy about anyone badmouthing her mom.
"Your mom, gentle? What a joke!" Alexander suddenly seemed like a different person. He started ranting, "Your mom had a terrible temper, nothing gentle about her. And you, you're just like her—sharp-tongued, stubborn, and old-fashioned. If you don't believe me, call your mom here, and we can ask her face-to-face..."
Aurora cut him off, "My mom's been dead for over ten years. Where do you expect me to call her from?"
Alexander suddenly froze, like a machine that had lost power.
Aurora repeated, "I said, my mom passed away. I guess I'll have to wait another sixty or seventy years to find her in heaven. Or do you want to go ask her first?"
"How... did she die?" Alexander finally found his voice after a long pause.
"She died of illness."
"How could she die? How could she die?" Alexander's emotions flared up again, almost hysterical. "How could she die before me? She said she wanted to see me fail. I built The Shadow of Darkness organization bigger and bigger just to show her that my choices were right. How could she die?"
Alexander's reaction was similar to Hank's, yet different.
Aurora couldn't figure out what kind of grudge or feelings Alexander had towards her mom. It seemed like he had a unique mix of resentment and something else.
Alexander held the vase and stared at it with a complex gaze. Suddenly, the vase shattered for no reason.
"Wendy!" Alexander froze for a while, then slowly crouched down to pick up the pieces.
"Did your mom say anything before she died? Or mention me?" Alexander asked as he picked up the shards, his expression returning to normal as if the hysterical person just now wasn't him.
"No." Aurora was old enough to remember, and she was sure her mom had never mentioned Alexander.
"That's typical her," Alexander said, as he wrapped the shards in a cloth and turned towards another antique shelf.
In that moment, Aurora thought she saw tears in Alexander's eyes, but she wasn't sure if it was just her imagination.
Just then, there was a knock on the door.
"Mr. Johnson, the late-night snack is ready."
"Bring it in," Alexander said.
A servant brought in two bowls of chowder and respectfully left.
Alexander put away the shards and sat down. "There's an extra serving. Try it."
Aurora glanced at it; it was clam chowder. "My mom used to eat this chowder often."
Hearing this, Alexander's hand paused for a moment, a fleeting sadness flashing in his eyes. He downed the clam chowder in one gulp. He had always been fond of it too.
After finishing his meal, he noticed Aurora hadn't touched hers and said, "Go ahead and eat. It's not poisoned."
Since Alexander had eaten it himself, Aurora figured it was safe. She was pregnant and had been having late-night snacks lately. Tonight, John had been cooking one, but she hadn't had a chance to eat it before being brought here.
Feeling a bit hungry, Aurora didn't hold back and sat down to eat. After a few bites, she asked, "When are you going to let me go?"
Aurora thought that bringing up her mom might make Alexander release her out of some sense of nostalgia, but to her surprise, Alexander said, "I've decided. I'll marry you as my seventh wife."
Aurora choked on her clam chowder. "Why do you still want to marry me? You're old enough to be my dad. Just because you didn't marry my mom, you want to marry me? Isn't that perverted?"
"Who said I wanted to marry your mom?" Alexander reacted strongly. "I told you, I don't like Wendy. I will never like her."
Aurora looked at the furious Alexander. "Men are just as contradictory as women."
Alexander stared at Aurora, momentarily speechless.
Aurora continued, "Look at your reaction. Isn't it obvious? I heard from Richard that my mom came to see you back then and then left Wolfpack. I'm very curious about what happened that made my mom go into hiding in Silvercrest City."
Alexander opened his mouth as if he wanted to say something but finally just said, "Just stay here. Once we set a date, we'll get married." Then he left.
"Hey, I didn't say I wanted to marry you..."
The only response Aurora got was the sound of the door closing. Alexander left in a huff.
In the guest room.
John had one hand cuffed to the bed, and Sandra came in with a bowl of clam chowder. "John, I brought you some clam chowder. Come and try it," she said sweetly.
John expressionlessly tugged at the handcuffs.
Sandra immediately said, "John, let me feed you then." She definitely wouldn't release John. Once he was released, it would be hard to capture him again.
"Don't waste your effort. I will never marry you." John closed his eyes, not even looking at Sandra.
"Don't worry, you'll change your mind." Sandra held the clam chowder in her hand with a smile on her face. "John, you don't want to now because Aurora has bewitched you. Once Aurora marries my dad, you'll change your mind."
Upon hearing this, John opened his eyes, his gaze cold and sharp like a knife. "Alexander wants to marry Aurora?"
"Yes, my dad has taken a liking to Aurora. He just took her to his room." Sandra scooped a spoonful of clam chowder and brought it to John's mouth. "John, have a bite."
"Take it away." John stood up and smashed the clam chowder out of Sandra's hand while yanking at the handcuffs. His voice was cold like ice. "Unlock it."
"You want to save Aurora? John, forget it. Do you think I'll let you go? I've come this far, and I'll see it through to the end. If you don't marry me, you'll be locked up here forever. As for Aurora, let's see how long she can last. Everyone knows my dad's methods."
John's expression turned cold. "If you harm a single hair on Aurora's head, I will destroy The Shadow of Darkness organization."
Seeing John so cared for Aurora made Sandra extremely jealous. "What's so good about Aurora? How am I any worse than Jennifer or Aurora? You can love them, but why not me? The more you favor Aurora, the more I won't let you be together. Even if it costs the entire Johnson family, I will make Aurora suffer. By the way, I also had clam chowder sent to Aurora and my dad. I added some drugs to it. They should have eaten it by now."
Sandra looked like a crazed lunatic, but there were even crazier people in the world.
John's eyes darkened. "I'll ask one last time. Will you let me go?"
"No." Sandra held John's hand, pleading, "John, marry me, please."
John shook off Sandra's hand, and pulled a knife from his pocket, then raised it to cut the handcuffed hand.
