Chapter 31 Mr. Lewis Pretends to Be Crippled
Aurora thought about slipping away quickly to avoid getting caught in the crossfire.
Aurora glanced around; it seemed difficult to leave.
All the exits were guarded by Rex's men.
The only plan now was to wait until these people left.
Just then, a cruise ship arrived at the dock, and dozens of workers disembarked, gradually loading all the cargo onto the ship.
As soon as the cargo was loaded, countless masked men suddenly appeared, surrounding the dock.
Rex glanced back and immediately tensed up. "It was Nightfall. Who leaked the information?"
A subordinate beside him said, "Mr. Rex Lewis, you should leave first, or it will be too late."
"This shipment must not fall into Nightfall's hands," Rex immediately ordered, "Get the ship moving."
This cargo was worth billions of dollars; if it got hijacked, Rex would be heartbroken.
Before the cruise ship could start, Nightfall's people made their move, and the dock descended into chaos.
Taking advantage of the chaos, Aurora crouched and quickly moved away. If she got caught up in this, it would be disastrous and life-threatening.
Rex was so scared, which showed he couldn't handle the Nightfall organization and was also wary of them.
Aurora was so nervous her heart skipped a beat. Leaving the dock, she quickened her pace and started running.
Aurora headed towards the highway, planning to hail a cab.
Suddenly, a car sped from the direction of the dock, followed closely by another car, both driving very fast.
Aurora watched in shock. Just a few seconds after the cars passed, she heard a violent crash.
Two cars collided.
Aurora quickly ran over. Both cars had flipped over, and the vehicles were completely wrecked.
Aurora was shocked, and at that moment, someone crawled out of one of the cars.
Aurora was very surprised and thought, 'Mr. Lewis?'
'What was he doing here?'
John stood with a cane, his scarred face looking even more terrifying in the moonlight.
John wasn't unscathed either; his arm was injured, and blood had soaked his clothes, turning them bright red.
Aurora was stunned. "Mr. Lewis."
John looked at Aurora, but before he could speak, another car was approaching.
"Run."
John grabbed Aurora and ran towards the nearby woods.
Aurora was bewildered; she didn't even know why she was running with him.
By the time she realized it, they were already deep in the woods.
And the supposedly crippled Mr. Lewis was running swiftly, not at all like a cripple.
He was even faster than her.
Aurora panted and said, "I can't run anymore."
They finally stopped, and the people behind them didn't catch up.
Aurora leaned against a tree, catching her breath. After a moment, she looked at the man in front of her, her gaze falling on John's leg, "Mr. Lewis, your leg is healed?"
John moved his leg and then limped a few steps, "It's crippled again."
Aurora thought, 'What a half-hearted act.'
'Did he think I was stupid?'
Aurora felt that the man in front of her had a sinister vibe, unlike her gentle boyfriend.
"Why were you at the dock, Mr. Lewis?"
John said in a deep voice, "I heard my Uncle Rex was in trouble tonight, so I came to watch the show. I didn't expect myself to get caught."
"Watching the show comes at a price; I almost got caught in the crossfire," Aurora said, "Those masked men were from the infamous organization, Nightfall, known for killing without blinking an eye."
The rumors about Mr. Lewis and Rex not getting along seemed true.
Judging by the extent of the car wreck, it was clear they intended to kill each other.
John smirked and asked, "You know about Nightfall?"
"I've heard a bit," Aurora didn't mention she had encountered them before.
Aurora suddenly remembered the rumors about the Lewis family's head being disfigured and crippled in a car accident. Could it be...
"Mr. Lewis, was the previous car accident also Rex's doing?"
Under the mask, John's lips curled up. "Miss White, you're very smart. Thank you for saving my life just now; otherwise, I would have died in that car accident."
"Me? I didn't do anything," Aurora was confused.
John said seriously, "I saw you from the car just now and was so stunned by your beauty that I got distracted and avoided the fatal crash. So, you saved me."
Aurora twitched her lips and thought, 'What a far-fetched reason.'
But what John said next shocked Aurora even more.
"Miss White, I have no way to repay your life-saving grace. Money is too vulgar, and gold and jewelry would be an insult to you. After much thought, I can only offer myself in marriage. How about I marry you?"
Aurora's eyes widened in shock. "You're not repaying a favor; you're seeking revenge. I'm just an ordinary person. Mr. Lewis, why don't you give me some money or gold and jewelry instead?"
She would rather be insulted by gold and jewelry.
Under the mask, John's smile deepened. This girl was really fun to tease.
"Miss White, you don't want to marry into the Lewis family because of that boy Daniel?" John's voice turned cold. "I saw you having a romantic candlelight dinner with Daniel on the yacht just now. It seems you're also fickle, saying you wouldn't marry anyone but your boyfriend, yet secretly dating someone else."
"I wasn't on a date; I was clearing things up with Daniel," Aurora didn't even know why she was explaining, but she felt a fear of being misunderstood.
Blood was still flowing from John's arm. He leaned against a tree and sat down, squinting his eyes, and said, "The Lewis family is like a dangerous abyss . It's understandable that you don't want to marry into it. Otherwise, following a man like me, who doesn't have long to live, you might die mysteriously one day."
The mask on John's face was specially made, making the fake scars look real and terrifying.
Aurora used to be scared, but now she didn't feel afraid. Instead, she felt an inexplicable sense of pity.
"At that time, it must have hurt a lot. Holding up the Lewis family must be really tough."
Aurora looked at John, who was surrounded by a sense of loneliness and desolation, and felt a pang in her heart.
His face was disfigured, his life was short, and he had to pretend to be crippled. It was clear that the Lewis family was indeed an abyss.
The position of the head of the Lewis family was not easy to hold.
Hearing this, John felt his heart tremble violently, and he opened his eyes, his gaze full of Aurora.
Aurora was feeling sorry for him.
In the last car accident, John had indeed almost lost his life.
Aurora squatted down to check John's arm wound. It was a deep cut, like a knife wound.
She remembered the bodyguards Rex had brought, dozens of them, and they were holding short knives.
"There were so many of them. Why are you getting involved? If you lose your life over this, it would just benefit Rex."
"It's nothing, just a small wound." John smiled with a hint of coldness.
John didn't tell Aurora that he had been distracted looking for her at the dock, which was why he got cut.
Aurora looked at the wound, her heart aching, and she said, "I'll take you to the hospital."
"If I go to the hospital, Rex will confirm that it was really me at the dock, and my act of pretending to be crippled will be exposed."
John leaned against the tree and suddenly grabbed Aurora's hand, pulling her into his arms, "Stay with me here for a while."
Aurora was caught off guard and pulled into his embrace.
This embrace felt strangely familiar to her.
Aurora nestled in John's arms, momentarily forgetting to react. The scent was familiar, and the broad and warm embrace wasalso very familiar.
Aurora looked up, staring at John's chiseled jawline, while John looked down.
Their eyes met, and time seemed to stand still, an eternity in a moment.
In the cold moonlight, their intimate posture looked very ambiguous.
Aurora stammered, "Mr. Lewis, the scent of your body wash is very familiar, just like the one at my home."
Hearing this, John felt nervous, fearing Aurora would discover his true identity. He quickly coughed violently to divert her attention.
John had been pretending to be sick for so long that he had perfected the art of coughing.
Aurora saw John coughing so hard he couldn't catch his breath and panicked, quickly patting his chest and asking, "Are you okay? Why are you coughing so badly?"
"I'm fine." John coughed a few more times, then stopped. "I'll be fine after a while. It's an old problem."
Aurora saw that John had really stopped coughing and finally breathed a sigh of relief. Her gaze fell on John's arm, "Your wound! Are you sure it's okay? It's still bleeding."
John glanced at it indifferently, "It'll stop bleeding soon."
Aurora looked at him.
"Mr. Lewis, aren't you afraid I'll expose your act of pretending to be crippled?"
John looked at her intently and asked, "Would you?"
Aurora was stunned and instinctively shook her head. She wouldn't do that.
They had almost become a couple before. Aurora had run away from the wedding, and John didn't hold it against her. Later, he even helped cancel her engagement to that fool from the Ford family. She couldn't repay his kindness with ingratitude.
John smiled, stretched out his legs, and lazily leaned against the tree. "Come sit over here and let me lean on you for a bit. I'm a little tired."
"Oh!" Aurora quickly sat over, not even realizing how obedient she was.
Aurora sat next to John, and he gently rested his head on her shoulder, closing his eyes to rest.
The night was dark and windy.
Aurora was afraid John would really fall asleep, which would be dangerous. After all, his wound was still bleeding, and who knew if he had other injuries. What if he fell asleep and never woke up?
"Mr. Lewis, don't fall asleep. Let's chat until your people arrive."
"Chat about what?" John's voice was casual and lazy.
"Tell me about your ex-wives. How did they die?" Aurora was really curious. "Is it true what the rumors say that you did it?"
Under the mask, John's lips curled into a smile. "What?"
"You know, that..." Aurora saw John still didn't get it and said directly, "The rumor is that you tortured them to death. Is it true?"
John raised an eyebrow and said, "Do I look like a cruel and cold-blooded person?"
Aurora really looked John up and down and then answered, "Yes."
John lazily glanced at Aurora without saying anything.
Aurora realized and said, "So you're saying you didn't do it? Then how did they die?"
John teased, "Why don't you marry me and find out?"
"No way." Aurora shook her head like a bobblehead, "I want to live a long life."
She'd be crazy to go to her death.
Was it easy to be the wife of the head of the Lewis family?
John closed his eyes, and both of them fell silent. The surroundings were so quiet that they could hear the sound of leaves being blown by the wind.
Before this, Aurora had never thought that one day, she would be hiding in a small forest, chatting with the head of the Lewis family.
She didn't know how much time had passed, long enough for Aurora to think John wouldn't speak again, but then she suddenly heard him say, "My grandfather had nine sons and five daughters. My father was the eldest son of the Lewis family. I grew up by my grandfather's side and was groomed by him to be the successor. In my father's branch, I'm the only son. If I die without an heir, the successor of the Lewis family would have to be chosen from the collateral branches."
Aurora didn't expect John to explain all this to her.
This was indeed a secret of the wealthy families.
Aurora immediately understood, "So your relatives don't want you to have children, and naturally, they would harm your wives."
The rumor was that John didn't have long to live. As long as he died without an heir, their goal would be achieved.
Aurora swallowed, feeling a bit relieved, and said, "Good thing was that I ran away from the wedding, or I'd be dead by now."
Compared to the power struggles in the Lewis family, her little conflicts with Emily were nothing.
John smiled. "You wouldn't die."
"Why?"
Everyone else died. How could she possibly outsmart the members of the Lewis family?
