Chapter 52 Stubborn
Aurora had been very busy since she joined the Lewis Group headquarters and gradually put John out of her mind.
One day, Aurora had just submitted a report and was leaving the office when she ran into Todd.
Todd was the heir to Smith Media Group and had been at the headquarters for a few days. Aurora also knew that Todd was concurrently serving as the vice president of the Lewis Group.
Seeing Todd naturally reminded Aurora of John.
They hadn't been in contact since their breakup.
Aurora planned to turn around and leave, but Todd saw her and called out, "Miss White."
Aurora had no choice but to stop. "Mr. Smith, what a coincidence."
Despite having been at the headquarters for a while, this was the first time Aurora had seen Todd.
Todd wasn't often at the company, only occasionally dropping by.
"Miss White, you seem to be avoiding me?" Todd said half-jokingly, half-seriously, "Even if you and my boss broke up, we're still friends, right? Miss White, you're making me a bit sad."
"Why would I avoid you? I really didn't see you just now, Mr. Smith," Aurora lied with a smile and quickly changed the subject. "Are you heading out, Mr. Smith?"
Todd saw through Aurora's little ploy to get rid of him.
Since Aurora joined the headquarters, Todd had been keeping an eye on her.
After Aurora and John broke up, John had been drinking heavily, and his temper had worsened, but Aurora seemed unaffected and continued with her work.
Todd said, "Yes, I am. By the way, Miss White, have you been in contact with my boss recently?"
"We broke up, so there's no need to stay in touch," Aurora said, "It's best to part on good terms."
Her answer was straightforward.
Todd sighed deliberately and said, "I have to go to the hospital, so I won't chat with you, Miss White. By the way, did you know my boss is in the hospital?"
Todd asked knowingly, and of course, Aurora didn't know.
Hearing this, Aurora was shocked and instinctively asked, "What happened to him?"
Seeing that Aurora still cared about John, Todd thought there was hope and sighed deeply again. "What else? He got into a car accident. Breaking up with you hit him hard. He's been drinking all the time, and it's dangerous to drink and drive. Yesterday, he got into an accident with a big truck."
Aurora was very worried and asked, "How is he?"
"It's serious. He's still in the hospital. The car was totaled, and he was unconscious. The doctors issued several critical condition notices, and it took all night to save him."
Todd exaggerated the situation, making it sound very serious. In reality, it was just a minor accident with a slight concussion, and John wasn't even scratched.
Observing Aurora's expression, Todd added, "My boss is heartbroken. Even if he was saved, his heart is dead."
Aurora asked anxiously, "Which hospital is he in?"
"First Central Hospital," Todd said with a sly look in his eyes but a calm face, "Miss White, you and my boss have broken up. You shouldn't visit him; it wouldn't look good for you."
"Nonsense, John is seriously injured. How can I not visit him?" Aurora said urgently, "Lead the way. I'll go with you."
"Didn't you just say there's no need to stay in touch?"
"Do you believe everything a woman says?" Aurora said, storming out. "I changed my mind, okay? Being fickle and contradictory is a woman's prerogative."
Todd was left speechless.
At the hospital, John was sitting up in bed, reading a magazine, when the door suddenly opened.
Aurora appeared in front of him unexpectedly.
"John, where are you hurt..."
Their eyes met.
Seeing John sitting there perfectly fine, not injured at all, let alone seriously, Aurora realized she had been tricked.
She glared at the culprit behind her, Todd.
Todd awkwardly touched his nose and said, "Boss, you have a strong constitution. You're already awake. You two talk, and I'll take a walk."
Todd gave them space.
After a week of not seeing each other, Aurora felt a bit uneasy, especially with John's intense gaze on her, making her feel guilty.
The room fell silent.
After a while, Aurora broke the silence. "Since you're fine, I'll be going."
"Who said I'm fine?" John suddenly spoke, "I have a mild concussion. The doctor said there might be aftereffects."
Aurora glanced at John and asked, "Is it serious?"
"Very serious," John closed the magazine.
"What did the doctor say?"
"Hospital observation."
"Then you..." Aurora suddenly didn't know what to say.
This question-and-answer mode was a bit awkward.
Aurora remembered what Todd had said and carefully advised, "John, I didn't know the breakup hit you so hard. I hope you can let yourself go. It makes me feel bad, too."
John squinted, his voice cold. "What did Todd tell you?"
"He said you've been drinking all the time, which led to the accident." Aurora guessed Todd had exaggerated, but she still felt responsible.
John's expression turned colder. "Don't believe him. It was just an accident. I haven't been drinking. It's just a breakup; I didn't take it to heart."
Todd was listening at the door.
'Stubborn.' Todd thought to himself.
'Didn't take it to heart, yet he was drinking with me every day?'
'And he still wants to get back together?'
'Looks like this will still depend on him.'
Aurora felt relieved but also inexplicably a bit disappointed. Ignoring her feelings, she said, "That's good. Take care and recover. I have to get back to work."
"Okay."
John averted his gaze, expressionless, but his grip on the magazine tightened unconsciously, crumpling it.
Aurora really left.
At the door, she saw Todd but said nothing and left.
After Aurora left, Todd walked into the room. "Boss, you clearly wanted Miss White to stay. Why did you let her go?"
"Shut up," John gave him a cold look.
Todd pulled up a chair and sat down. "If I hadn't spoken up, Miss White wouldn't have come to see you. Boss, don't let this cold war drag on too long, or the relationship will really cool off. With Miss White's talent and beauty, many men are pursuing her. Don't regret it later."
John remained silent, his face stern.
At this moment, a nurse walked in. "Mr. Lewis, your discharge papers are ready. You can leave the hospital."
John continued reading the magazine, expressionless, and said, "I'll stay a few more days."
"Huh?" The nurse was confused.
Who would get addicted to staying in the hospital?
Todd immediately understood John's intention and laughed, telling the nurse, "Extend the room for another month."
