Chapter 13: Playing with Fire
Sam stepped forward and slapped Emily a dozen times.
"Aaah!" The room was filled with Emily's screams, but no one dared to step forward, let alone speak out to stop it.
The Ford family members watched the scene, not daring to breathe loudly, fearing they might get caught in the crossfire.
"Mom, Mom, save me!" Emily cried for help.
Nicole didn't dare to speak, only watching her daughter's face swell up, blood flowing continuously from the corner of her mouth, and her nose bleeding.
Sam didn't hold back at all.
For him, there was no such thing as not hitting women; the boss's orders were above everything.
Eighteen slaps in total.
After he was done, Emily collapsed on the ground, not daring to touch her face, which was burning with pain. Her eyes were full of fear, and she could barely speak, "Mom, it hurts. My face hurts."
"Emily." Nicole hugged her daughter, heartbroken.
Emily's cheeks were symmetrically swollen, with clear finger marks.
Aurora swallowed hard; even she felt that it was too tragic to watch.
'Mr. Lewis was indeed as ruthless as the rumors said, showing no pity at all.It seemed the rumors about his three previous wives being killed were true.Luckily, I didn't marry him,' she thought.
Aurora couldn't recognize that the John in front of her was her boyfriend she spent every day with.
His voice sounded a bit familiar, but she quickly dismissed the idea.
It was just a similar name.
This John was a cripple, sitting in a wheelchair, with a disfigured face; how could he possibly be her boyfriend?
Aurora stared at John; it was her first time seeing the notorious Mr. Lewis.
She wondered what he looked like before his face was ruined.
John looked sickly, turned to Dean, and coughed as he said, "Mr. White, do you think the discipline was too harsh?"
"Not at all, not at all." Dean didn't dare show any dissatisfaction, groveling in front of John, nothing like the man who had just scolded Aurora. "I should thank you for disciplining my daughter, Mr. Lewis. Emily speaks without thinking and deserves a lesson."
"Mr. White, you're quite sensible." John's tone was cold as he looked at Aurora and asked knowingly, "And who is this?"
"This is my eldest daughter, Aurora." Dean observed John's reaction, trying to gauge his thoughts.
Dean was smart; he didn't say too much about Aurora and kept signaling Aurora to leave quickly.
Since the Lewis family had called off the engagement, it meant they wouldn't want Aurora anymore. As long as they got through today, the marriage alliance between the White family and the Ford family could still proceed.
But Aurora wasn't going to let Dean have his way.
"Dad, since the White family and the Ford family are forming an alliance with this huge wedding celebration, we've gotta invite Mr. Lewis for a drink. Even though I didn't marry Mr. Lewis, and our families didn't become in-laws, out of courtesy, we should still invite him, right?"
Aurora said this on purpose, betting that Mr. Lewis would stand up for her.
Even if she was rejected by the Lewis family, she almost became part of them. Even if the Lewis family didn't want her, she couldn't just marry a fool right after; that would be slapping the Lewis family in the face.
Comparing the head of the Lewis family to a fool was an insult.
John's lips curled slightly.
This girl was really smart.
As soon as Aurora spoke, Dean's face changed. Before he could say anything, John smiled bloodthirstily and said casually, "Oh? The White family and the Ford family are forming an alliance? When did this happen?"
The casual tone made Dean and Vincent's backs go cold.
Vincent forced a smile. "It's not decided yet, just casual talk, nothing serious."
Vincent didn't want to offend John either. Seeing Emily's face swollen like a pig, how could he dare to get involved with the White family again and invite trouble?
Hearing this, Dean knew the marriage alliance was off the table.
John, sitting in his wheelchair, glanced indifferently at Vincent. "Mr. Ford, your son is in his thirties, and I understand your concern for his future. But I think the White family's eldest daughter doesn't match your son; the younger daughter, however, seems quite suitable."
This statement made the entire hall fall silent, with Dean and Vincent both trying to guess John's intentions.
Emily was already married to the Taylor family; how could she marry again?
Aurora didn't understand what Mr. Lewis meant either.
Emily, hearing that she might be married off to the Ford family's fool, panicked. "I won't marry. I'm already part of the Taylor family; I won't marry that fool."
Hearing the word "fool," the noblewoman who had been sitting quietly got angry. "Just now, you said my son was handsome and talented, and that it was a good match. How can you call my son a fool now? How can you be so harsh and venomous?"
Emily was extremely regretful; earlier, she had praised him to get Aurora to marry him.
"Oh? I didn't expect the White family's younger daughter to admire Mr. Ford's younger son so much." John smiled. "Mr. Ford, if you're satisfied, I can talk to the Taylor family for you."
Hearing this, Emily panicked. "No, Dad, say something. I don't want to marry that fool; I was just talking nonsense."
Dean didn't know what to do.
One wrong move, and they would offend both the Ford family and the Lewis family.
Nicole also panicked. "No, Emily is already married; how can she marry again? Mr. Lewis, please stop joking. Please have mercy and let Emily go. She's still young and doesn't understand anything."
Aurora sneered inwardly. 'Still young at twenty-six?'
"Aunt Clark, you all said it was a good match just now. I think Emily is eager to marry into the Ford family. She married the wrong person before, and now Mr. Lewis is in charge, giving her a chance to marry again. This is a good thing."
Emily was furious, glaring at Aurora. "If you want to marry, you go marry."
"How can that fool be worthy of my daughter?" Nicole regretted her words as soon as she said them.
Seeing Nicole and Emily's true colors, Vincent and Mrs. Ford were furious.
"Your White family isn't even good enough for my son. If you hadn't begged us, we wouldn't have come." Mrs. Ford said angrily, "At such a young age, with such a deep and malicious mind, she's not fit to be my daughter-in-law. The Taylor family is unlucky to have such a daughter-in-law."
Vincent's face was also grim. "Mr. White, you sure raised a good daughter and married a good wife."
Dean hurriedly apologized, "Mr. Ford, Mrs. Ford, please calm down."
Dean was almost driven mad by these two women; they spoke without thinking and completely offended the Ford family.
"I think the cooperation we discussed earlier is off the table. I'm leaving." Vincent said, then bid farewell to John. "Mr. Lewis, let's have coffee another time. I have things to do, so I'll leave now."
John said indifferently, "Mr. Ford, take care."
Dean hurriedly said, "Mr. Ford..."
Vincent left with his wife, filled with anger.
Seeing they had completely offended the Ford family, Dean glared at Nicole.
Nicole and Emily were furious, feeling the fire they intended to set on Aurora had burned them instead, while Aurora remained unscathed.
They blamed it all on Aurora, deepening their hatred for her.
Even though Dean was furious, he didn't dare to act out now, as John was still there.
He couldn't afford to offend both the Ford family and the Lewis family.
After Vincent left, Dean's palms were sweaty with anxiety. He nervously asked, "Mr. Lewis, what brings you here today?"
Dean still didn't know why Mr. Lewis had come.
John's gaze fell on Aurora.
Dean looked at Aurora in confusion.
'Could it be that he came for Aurora?Did John still want to marry her?' he thought.
